Well, I've done it -- I've changed to something else for work other than anything in healthcare. I was an MT for many years, and I can't see any future for decent earnings, benefits or growth unless a person wants to be in direct patient care -- if they can even break into it after all of the hard work to earn another degree. I do have a university degree and changed to a job that pertains to that degree. I have seen many organizations go to Epic, which is an excellent system by the way; however, I felt that management used what they thought was 'new technology' to push job descriptions and wages even lower. I have also wondered how many other organizations that currently use another type of system will soon decide that they should have just invested in Epic. It is a huge adjustment since I've had almost 20 years working in hospitals.
What are the thoughts of other MTs? Would you take the plunge into something other than healthcare if you had the opportunity? Just starting a discussion about the current state of affairs as an MT.
