Beware email virus scam - mumscritters

Posted: Mar 28, 2013

I'm sure most of you are savvy enough to watch out for email scams. I only mention this because I actually am expecting a package and this one looks legit enough. It appears to be from FedEx. Says the courier could not deliver your package, print this receipt and follow directions.

Wow - me

I had one last night supposedly from the FBI about downloading videos (which I have never done) and paying a fine - it froze my whole computer, couldn't do a thing. Luckily, my youngest son is handy, looked up the scam and followed the instructions and I'm ok today. Why don't people get a REAL job instead of messing where they don't belong. ?

Apparently there is a new batch of masquerading as a legitimate business email viruses going around. I so agree with you, why don't these people get a life :-(

There is a package-delivery scam like that. - sm

There are phishing emails that appear to be from FedEx or other carriers. They say your package couldn't be delivered.

How would the carrier have gotten your email address?

If you did not ASK them for email updates on your package status, then they didn't email you.

In any event, if the carrier could not deliver your package, they will leave a note at your door.

Scams are REALLY bad now, not just online - sm

I applied for a legitimate company payday loan a while back and something else came through and I never finished the application. A little while later, I got an email from someone saying that I had received that payday loan and I must pay back $4000 IMMEDIATELY or I was going to be arrested for bank fraud. It said they deposited the money into my account with some sort of agreement to take the money back at a specified time and the money wasn't in there to take back and I had a warrant out for my arrest!

They had a telephone number on the email, so I checked my bank account and saw there was no deposit and I called the number on the email. An ESL person answered and I told him I hadn't even gotten the payday loan and he said I had and that a warrant had already been taken out for my arrest in California and they would be serving it soon and be taking me to California to be jailed! He said the only way to stop this was for me immediately deposit the 4 grand and allow them to take it out for payment.

It scared me to death, they had a warrant number, the name of the law enforcement agency, etc. I then called my local sheriff's department, scared to death, and they checked and said I had no warrants. I told them what happened and they said it was a scam, they had heard this before and to change my bank account info. immediately. They even called the place I had called and they reported it to somewhere.

It all seemed so legit and it would seem that these people who are willing to put so much time and effort into trying to rip someone off could put the same time and effort into something legal and could probably make a good income that way.

What I Do - see msg

I never, ever call a phone number from an e-mail or go to a link. I get a recent bill or whatever and only use that phone number and call them to see if it was "them."

One time, I got a phone call from someone claiming to be from my bank to "verify" my Social Security number. As soon as they said that to me, I said, "I am not that stupid," and I hung up the phone.

My MIL was famous for talking to strangers on the phone. She would go on and on like they were her best friend, telling them all sorts of things. Drove us nuts.

Another thing, I best have you on my list of contacts because if I don't recognize a phone number or it comes up as "unavailable" then I just happen to be unavailable too. Hope I haven't missed that HGTV Dream House phone call :-)

I'm from a small town so I've known everybody at my bank for years. They would catch me in the grocery store before they would call me :-) but it still astounds me the twisted stuff the criminal mind will think up.

Yea, my mother-in-law does the same thing! - crazy

We have had to have my MIL change her bank information and credit cards more times than I can count. She knows she is making a mistake to give out information, but I guess she can't help herself! Anytime she gets a phone call, she talks and talks to the people and tells them whatever they ask, including personal information. She then calls my husband and says..."I think I goofed, I just had someone call saying they were from the bank and needed my account number and I gave it to them" Well HELLO, why in the world would the bank call and ask you for your account number! I have BEGGED this lady to just hang up the phone if she doesn't recognize someone, but she refuses.

MIL - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
Yup, I'm the OP regarding my MIL, just above. She would go on and on, giving out information where her son lived and worked, where she lived, like the person was a long lost friend who needed updating on all the goings on in the family. "I used to live in blah blah, but now I live in blah blah next door to my son, who works at blah blah..."

One thing that really got me. We used to keep a safe in our furnace room. We had a blanket over it to kind of disguise it. Anytime someone would come over to work on the furnace or an appliance or something, my FIL would point to it and say "that's a safe under that blanket." Hubby and I were like, geeeeez.

Between my MIL and FIL, I'm surprised we didn't lose everything we all owned!

Wow - thanks for the timely heads-up, as I'm - (sm)-Meerkat

currently expecting a large package from FedEx, and I would've totally believed it if I'd gotten that message. You may have just saved my computer! Thanks!!!

MQ Virus
Feb 03, 2010

Has anyone had to deal with tech for a computer virus?  My MQ computer (not this one) has a virus, it says a worm and also security 2010 virus.  I did not work today nor tomorrow, so I am not going to deal with it until it is my work day, not on my days off.  So the computer is shut off until then.  However, I was wondering how long does it take to fix?  I had a nasty virus about a year ago on my personal computer and had to have it completely erased and new windows load ...

Virus Scans
Sep 14, 2010

I think this is where I am to post this.  I have Norton 360 installed on my computer.  Every night, it just starts running a scan, usually when I am working :-(.  This really, really slows my computer down.  Is there anything I can about this?  I have it set for "manual scans."  I didn't think it would just run on its own if I had it set to manual.  I then run a scan every night after I get down working.  It is very aggravating.  Any help or advi ...

Crap! I Received A Virus.
Jun 01, 2010

So, I am working on MQ computer and wanted to ask a question on MTstars and before you know it, a virus started downloading.  I freaked out and tried to stop the virus from scanning.  I got out of MTstars and tried to get out of report I was on and nothing, my computer froze.  I turned off computer and waited for 10 minutes, got back on and I cannot get into DocQscribe or Schedulesource because a warning window pops up stating I have a virus.  I cannot even get into Schedule ...

Virus Scanner Download
Jul 30, 2010

I'm definitely sure I have some bugs in my computer as manifested by my search results bringing me to repeated links other than what I clicked.  I was using Threatfire, but that didn't pick anything up.  I did Trendmicro Housecall and that picked stuff up and fixed them and everything seemed to be alright, but it comes back after reboot.  Does MQ have a virus scanner for free download and, if so, where can I get it?  Thanks! ...

The patient is in a s/l *total shell* with a headrest secondary to West Nile virus, some neuromotor dysfunction, but no acute changes. Scam Ads
Apr 21, 2011

just curious... I see the scam ad for belly fat on main screen here now.  This "julie" person does the exact same advertising for several products - same wording.  There's no such person, no such TV station.  If you look closely, top of screen has word ADVERTORIAL on status line.  That is their blanket disclaimer that pretty much means it's all made up, not a factual person or situation.  Just a story.  Why is it on this site? ...

Transform Scam?
Sep 28, 2010

Is anybody else going through this?  Transform used to be a great company, been there for years making good pay, good accounts.  Lately they have just insituted this fancy new "pay" system where our base pay has been decimated but we get to make up some of it up by jumping through all these hoops, like typing more than 1000 lines gets you a percentage increase (percentage of what), using typing keyboard "shortcuts" gets you more crumbs here and there.  In the end we really don ...

It was a get-rich scheme from the very beginning. Brilliant, really. Except that when they championed the offshoring of our work, and the lowering of our wages, they made it so that most MTs with anything between the ears but empty space would question the value of the BOS, the validity of the CMT, and the very existence of this so-called "for-the-MTs" organization.
