Recently I was told the account I've been on for the past decade is going to voice recognition. Having worked on a VR platform briefly, I know I don't want to get screwed making half the money with longer hours. I really hated it and did almost as much typing then as now - only at half the rate.

That being said, has anyone gone out and found a couple of docs locally to transcribe on their own? I guess I'd have to buy a call-in system? Just seems like it would be lovely to have a couple of my own accounts without all the hassle and nit picking that goes on with most MT companies now ... sigh.

I have found several accounts just by going on Craigslist and calling around to local physicians and sending my resume.....doesn't hurt to just ask your personal doctor, too!!!

to pay me before he went out of town for the Columbus Day weekend. I hope he enjoys that Mexican beach while I sit here wondering if I am going to be evicted before he returns and can transfer the money into my account...This isn't the first time. It hasn't happened in a year, but when it does happen, it seems to be when rent is due.

I'm not trying to keep you from getting your own account, but please think about what that middle man finances for you when it doesn't get paid, but still sends you a check.

The sports medicine doc would most definitely remember to do all of his dictation and leave me tons of work; however, he would conveniently "forget" to sign my check (and, like you, it was right around rent time and that check was a necessity on which I counted). I'd have to wait until he came back from his 3- to 4-day jaunt to have him sign the check, race to the bank, and race it over to my landlord.

The last time it happened, I actually had the office manager (who apparently didn't have authorization to sign paychecks, or so she claimed) to write me out a brief note stating that the doc had forgotten to sign my paycheck before he went out of town and the date he'd be back.

After I inconvenienced the office manager that one time, coincidentally the doc never "forgot" to sign my paycheck again. At least I avoided having to pay late charges on my rent that month, thanks to that note.

Not trying to dissuade the OP from pursuing her own accounts, just pointing out how you have to stay on top of your accounts to make sure you get paid (and that no one "forgets" to sign your paycheck before they take off to parts unknown, lol!).

rather than buying a system, try WebShuttle. I had looked into this, and then didn't need them. But you only pay for using the system by how much you use, as i recall. There are some downsides to being your own boss (ie, coverage for time off) but at the rate things are going with MTSOs, it's looking better all the time.

I think having a few accounts on your own in addition to working for a service or hospital system is a good thing, but I dont think there is much future in being an IC for most practices. The larger practices are too much for one MT to handle and most practices, even the smaller ones, are converting to EMR and trying to save on transcription costs. Plus as the younger docs come in, they are more computer savy and seem to prefer just doing their own notes. Between paying the additional taxes and God forbid if you need to buy insurance, it is very difficult to make enough to make it worth your while. Personally I have a few specialist in the area I do work for on an as-needed basis, but for my main income I think working for a hospital system is the best bet.

she is 70 so guess she is ready. The doc taking over the practice is using EMR so I am out of luck, though he may use me for letters but have not heard back from them on that as yet. She recently went on vacation and forgot to pay me, but as it was chump change ($23) I was not too worried about it, got it eventually about 2 weeks late. She'd cut back over a year ago in order to save money and had gone back to handwriting her notes, giving me th e odd note and referral letters....so my pay plummetted as it is. --but gonna try and get some new ones, know a few MTs so could possibly start off with a pretty good crew if they are interested in working for me....LOL.

I have 3 jobs. I work for 2 MTSOs, and I also work for a group of 3 doctors and 3 nurse practitioners. They are wonderful dictators, and they always pay promptly. They use tapes, so I have to take a bus to their office once a week to pick up the tapes and deliver the printed work.

I looked in the Yellow Pages and made a list of doctors' offices within walking distance or on a bus line. I sent resumes and cover letters.

I'm going to be sending out brochures to doctors' offices in my area. I'm wondering which specialties would be the best ones to target - i.e., more likely to outsource their transcription to an individual transcriptionist, least likely to have EMR or EPIC. It was bad enough that we lost 1 of the accounts that I have had for 13 years last week, but today, without notifying me, I was put on new accounts.....the accounts where they are firing people left and right because of not passing audits. The worst thing to me is when you get a few jobs in a row and try to build up some momentum, then OOW again!
