Acute Care Experience - puppyluv
Posted: Nov 12, 2012
I have been looking for full or part-time work for quite some time now. Most of the ads require acute care experience. Is it worth taking a course for acute care or should I work on getting my CMT certification? With all of the changes to health care recently, I didn't know if it was worth pursuing.

You can't get the credential of CMT until you've had some experience, or at the very least, an excellent school. The CMT is not a graduation certificate, it is a specific credential where you take intense tests, separate from the school you attended.
I'm not clear if you have even clinic experience. If so, and you really want to pursue MT in a big way, then you would still need to learn it.
If you have no MT experience at all, and you really want to do this, then choose one of the 2 great schools in the country for distance learning. Lots and lots of notes about them.
We aren't supposed to discourage people here, so I won't do that. Just stay current and read notes on this forum and then make your decision.

I have been a self-employed MT for the last 10 years, so I do have some experience, just not in acute care. Some of my offices have to change to the hospital system for Medicare reimbursement so they are leaving me. I have been looking locally (sending out letters and following up with phone calls) but no luck so far. That is why I was looking elsewhere but the lack of acute care experience is a real hindrance. Any suggestions on where to go from here?

A good course. The 10 years clinic (even in a few specialties) will not prepare you for acute care. People have different opinions about this, but I can't imagine doing it without training. Hospitals don't take the time anymore, and besides, they're outsourcing to the big MTSOs.
I would apply anyway, though, to an MTSO. If you have at least multi-specialty clinic, they may test you. Give it a shot.
I agree with this post - Ruby Tuesday

Also, if you get on with an MTSO doing clinic work, after you've established yourself, you could probably inquire about being trained in acute care transcription. It would be an excellent way to be paid while you train, and hopefully with a helpful, constructive QA person to help you along.

Getting Acute Care Experience May 26, 2010I have been an MT for 11 years and am wanting to expand my knowledge base beyond the realm of radiology. I have been applying for acute care positions but I am not even given the opportunity to test most of the time because I don't have any acute care experience. I would like to know what I would have to do in order to get some acute care experience behind me so that I can become eligible to apply for and test for acute care positions. Any information anyone has on this would be most a ...

Experienced, But No Acute Care Experience Apr 03, 2011Hi All,
I have been a transcriptionist for 10 years, working both in-house and home (currently doing both), but the company I currently work for is going to EMR (and of course, I'm the one setting it up for them) and will be out of a job within the coming months.
I have applied and taken tests for various companies and have also had phone interviews over the last year. Unfortunately I am not offered a position due to "not having enough experience" in the acute care field. Corr ...
Acute Care Transcription - Does Anyone Have Experience? Jan 17, 2012I have been transcribing for 30 years mostly orthopedics. I want very much to do acute care transcription. Does anyone think I have a chance to get into it? I feel as though I am at a dead end if I don't do something different to further my career. I feel very qualified to do it. I took a good course from AHDI with cardiology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, and surgeries through Oak Horisons. This was a very well-rounded course and covered everything involved. Thought maybe someone m ...

Acute Care? Sep 23, 2014As a relative newbie MT, I'm not certain what "acute care" means. Does it mean basically all reports that are from doctors in the hospital setting? That is, would any hospital operative note, hospital progress note, and all discharge summaries be considered "acute care"?
I know a clinic note is basically a note by an outpatient doctor, right? And it's basically about more minor medical problems albeit could be chronic rather than "acute." ...
