Andrews coding grads/students: Questions - sm

Posted: Feb 03, 2015

Okay, I wrote the previous post, but I have a few more questions. Any help is appreciated.

How much does the coding program cost?

How long did it take you to complete, full-time or part-time?

Did you feel job-ready when you finished the course?

Are there any hidden fees for exams, etc.?

If you went the Andrews for MT as well, how would you compare the intensity of the two courses?

I did attend Andrews for medical transcription 8 years ago, and I loved the program then. That is why I would be going back there for coding. I just want to have my ducks in a row before I call them.

All the info you need is on their website - nm

A website can promise me unicorns and rainbows, but I am looking for real-world examples from people who attended the school.

I will answer some of your questions again but... - sm

...a huge part of coding (just as it is in MT) is researching things on your own. When I was debating which school to attend, I did a ton of research before I chose Andrews.

How much does the coding program cost? $4500. This is available on the website. Please Google Andrews School catalog.

How long did it take you to complete, full-time or part-time? Just over a year part time while working as an MT.

Did you feel job-ready when you finished the course? Yes and no. School coding and real world coding are two different things, but I do feel that my education at Andrews probably put me ahead of the game. I certainly have a whole lot more to learn, which I'm doing every day on the job.

Are there any hidden fees for exams, etc.? I paid the tuition and nothing more.

If you went the Andrews for MT as well, how would you compare the intensity of the two courses? N/A.

Again, best of luck to you.

Thank you for replying - sm

I have definitely done my research and am in touch with Linda. Part of my research was asking questions on this board. I am not solely relying on these answers to make a determination as to whether or not I am going to enroll. I just wanted other people's experiences.

Thank you again.

You're very welcome. Glad to help! - nm

Cost is exactly what the website says. There are no hidden costs. Everything Is Included. You do not need to supply anything ... no books or references. There are no fees for "extensions" or exams or retakes. No surprises.

No coding graduates of any program ever feel job-ready. However, you will be job-ready for a beginning job and you will have the skills to continue learning on the job.

I'm a current struggling student and really appreciate that outlook/perspective.

That pertained to Andrews ... - Andrews Grad

Well, that pertained to Andrews, so as long as you go there, you should be fine. I can't say that other programs end up with such good results, having seen some that don't.

I think, too, that Andrews' standards are so high that it causes students to be more concerned than necessary. You have had feedback all along and see reality, so to speak. You want to be perfect.

Programs that have no instructors and which teach less have so little feedback that students get to the end unconcerned, pass the final, get their "high honors" and think they are fantabulous. Then they can't pass a certification exam or barely pass, struggle to get a job, struggle on the job, and don't really see that something is wrong because the rah-rah program conveyed that everything was unicorns and rainbows.
I understand - I am a current Andrews student - Soon2BMTtoCoder

You will do fine. - And if not ...

...remember that you get a free retake with a year to take it. That should take the pressure off. Just take it with the attitude that you are just seeing what's on it, no worries.

If your local chapter offers a weekend review, definitely take it. It will be worth it. They point out all sorts of little things. It can bring it all into perspective.

Caution To Students And New Grads - Scam Alert - Do MT Work (Internship) For Free
Mar 10, 2011

There is still another scam company out there offering to help "train" students and graduates. They will kindly let you do their real work, the work clients are paying them for. This is unacceptable and unethical. It will not look good on your resume because potential employers do not look kindly on this. If, for example, they find out that you did your 'internship' with XYZ Company, you will probably never know the reason why your resume was rejected or tossed.  Working for free ...

Question For Andrews School Grads
Nov 20, 2013

Okay -- I think I've made my decision to not go back to my local community college after I finish ICD-9 fall semester.  I just don't feel it is giving me what I need, and it is not preparing me to pass anything.  Most of the students in my class are taking coding as just another class they have to pass so they can move on to something else.  I am paying a lot of money because I'm out of state, and I don't feel like I'm getting value.  I've n ...

How Long Did It Take Andrews' Grads To Finish Course?

I'm getting ready to enroll in the Andrews program. I was just curious how long it took previous grads with families and working? I currently work 30 hours weekly & have 2 children. For Other Andrews Students In Module III
May 18, 2012

Hi you all, I hope there are some students in module III who are in the case studies or have graduated that can answer my question.  I have just gotten into the intermediate case studies and am feeling totally LOST! May 19, 2013

I am just wondering if any other coding students sometimes feel so overwhelmed, especially trying to work full time and study. I knew going into this that it wasn't going to be easy. Question For Coding Students
Jul 17, 2013

I'm looking into different coding programs. A local community college is teaching ICD-10, while Career Step, for example, is teaching ICD-9, but offering a "free ICD-10 FastTrack course to prepare you for the transition to ICD-10." Is it odd that Career Step is still teaching primarily ICD-9? What about Andrews? How are they handling this transition? ...

My Dream Job And A Question For Coding Students

Advising The New Coding Students Or Those Searching For Their First Job
Nov 07, 2012

Coders who post on this board need to remind themselves that it is basically for MTs who are networking.    A medical transcriptionist who is a coding student or has become a newly certified coder has now learned in the last couple of days that: 1.      MT experience, other than medical knowledge, means nothing in the coding world.  There IS a big difference between school coding and actual work. 2.      The ...

Any Students In Coding Courses Found Mistakes?
May 21, 2012

I am almost done with a course that was put together by the credentialing organization.  Now that I am almost done, I have gathered my notes on the course inconsistencies and incorrect answers to submit my comments to them so this doesn't happen to the next student.  I would like to hear the coders' and students' thoughts on this. Doesn't someone take the entire course and fix/correct BEFORE it is offered as a course?  ...

Coding Schools - Andrews
Jul 14, 2011

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Based on my training at Andrews, I have not had a problem with employment tests, passing the RMT and CMT, etc., and with the coding program, as long as I study hard  and do the assignments, I believe that I will have the same experience. Based on the excellent training I received at Andrews, I am beginning to go through the coding course. The ...

CPC/CCS Coding Program Other Than Andrews

Does anyone know of a (non-degree) program other than Andrews that upon completion will allow you to be eligible to sit for the CCS and CPC exam. I Want To Consider Going To Andrews For Their Coding Program
Apr 27, 2015

and I think I'd enjoy the job (after researching for the past year). I really want to do something interesting for the rest of my working life (and still have a career rather than just a job like I do now), but now I'm starting to wonder if I am too old at 58.  I guess I'd get through the schooling in about 12 months, then take the CCS exam (takes time?) and then I say give myself up to a year to find a job (??).  That would mean I could be pushing 60 when I began.  ...

Can Andrews' Coding Course Be Completed In Less Than 12 Months?
Jan 24, 2011

I've been looking at both Andrews and Career Step for online coding classes.  One thing that I've noticed (other than the cost differences) is that the Career Step course can be completed in as little as 4 months.  It seems the Andrews course takes a minimum of 12 months.  Is it possible to complete it in less time or is that frowned upon?  If I had the extra money and time, I would probably be leaning toward Andrews (particularly since I already completed thei ...
