Andrews School of Medical Coding and Transcription...........

Just wanted to say a few words about Andrews School of Coding.

3 years ago I finished an AHIMA accredited program for Health Information, going through the program I realized there were some gaps that I needed to fill in on the coding end. I love AHIMA and being part of the organizaiton, and look forward to working in the field for a long time.  What I am finding with Andrews is that they offer an indepth, hands on training specifically for the coding area. Again, I love the fact that I am an RHIT, but anyone wanting to become more proficient in the area of coding, PLEASE look into their program. First, it is less expensive than the traditional two year course of health information, and Second, this is specifically designed for the coding area and those interested in coding and becoming a CCS (Coding Certified Specialist) through AHIMA.

The training they provide will give you the background that you need to do the job, and if you decide down the road to finish out the RHIT associate degree than you do so through an online program without the sacrifice of going to day classes. There are EXCELLENT online programs for the RHIT, but if you are interested in coding, then please check into the Andrews School of Coding.

Truly a satisfied student!

Why don't you let people decide for themselves?

I think that was her point - sm

Wasn't that what she said? To check it out for yourself?

Below, there was a request for student opinions. Looks like this is an opinion from a student in a program. It's what everyone was asking for.

It's interesting, too, because the student already did an RHIT program and didn't feel she learned enough from it to work in coding.

People should decide for themselves. I just know what I have been through and the type of help that I was needing to improve my skills.

I know several people that have been frustrated by not being able to find a entry level coding position and many times it is not only the experience level but the ability to pass many of these tests.

I am not sure what your experience has been, but it certainly may have been different. I just know there is a lot of frustration among people going to school for coding and not finding the work. As you said, let people judge for themselves. I was just providing some information for those who might need some help.

Have you gotten a coding job yet? Was it hard to do without experience. - Thanks for your info. nm

Have you gotten a job - Skater
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I am working in medical coding. To be honest, it was difficult to find a job without any experience. You really have to find a place, physician's office or hospital, that would be willing to train you. I actually found a place through a recruiter, and it was a first step. Please do not take this to mean that you will not ever find a job. You know it depends on where you are living, and being able to connect with the right individuals.

I don't know what your background is, but if you have worked in the medical field that would be a help, if you have not worked in medical then try connecting with people that have experience and that you know. I am not sure if you are still in school, or just thinking about it, but if you are in school and getting ready to do clinicals....make the most of it. Let them know that you are being thorough in your observations and that you are willing to do a good job.

If this is too much info just let me know, but the bottom line is if you really want to do this, and are willing to work hard then go for it. I made the comment in one of my early postings that coding is something an individual either loves or hates..........there is really no middle ground with it.

Hope this helps......if you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask.

I appreciate your input, Skater, and a question - MTLC

I do have a question for you, Skater: Are you currently working in the HIM field. If so, are you doing coding or some other facet? Thanks.

I appreciate hearing from folks who have something to compare their schooling experience to, either in the work force or with other programs they have taken.

I probably wont be able to start any school until next year. To those who are almost done with your coding program/school: Please post back with how things are going, what kind of work you are getting, etc.

Currently, I am working in the coding field. I love coding, and I love the challenge of coding.

I will tell you that it can be tough finding a new place to find a new coder. That is one thing that I wasn't told in going through the formal 2 year program that I had. This is not to say that you will have trouble, it just depends on where you live or if you are willing or able to move.

Coding is one of those things that you will either love it or hate it. I have yet to find an individual in the middle. I am not sure how to explain it, other than it falls into one of those groups. If you really want a challenge, and are willing to work hard, then coding IS a great field to work in and develop your abilities.

My other piece of advice, would be to look at more than one school, compare the costs, and try-if possible- talking to a professor or even better a student who has gone through the program. Actually, you might try talking to more than one if you are looking at a local program. If you have the chance to do so, ask some questions concerning any type of help with job placement, salary range...actually, try talking to the graduates if you can. This will mean a lot!!! Listen to some of what they are telling you. Wherever you decide to go, you want to make sure that you have professors that are willing to teach you and answer any and all questions that you have. This is really the only way to learn. Coding can be like reading Greek. If you don't have someone who is willing to guide and direct you than you will be in really big trouble.

Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Andrews School -- Job
Sep 19, 2012

I am an MT who was laid off from my job and I am seriously considering coding school.  So far, I am leaning towards Andrews, they sound the best.  My question is, will I be able to find a job that pays well afterwards?  I have looked at a few job postings online in my area and it looks like entry level coders are only 10 bucks an hour.  This concerns me as I don't want to put out a lot of money for coding school if I am not going to be making much money.  Also, ...

Andrews School...which Course To Take?
Nov 13, 2012

This may not be the right board, but I thought I would put it here. I have been interested in taking the coding course through Andrews for over a year now. I was just wondering if that is the way to go or if I should take a different course that they are now offering. They now offer billing and medical management. I know that medical transcription is out because I am already a transcriptionist and that is not going well. Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you. ...

I need financial aid.  Andrews doesn't accept Pell grants. etc.  Currently I'm on unemployment.  Been unemployed for about 2 months now.  Have been an MT for 37 years.  I applied for WIA funds (workforce investiment act) and included info about Andrews and medical coding in general, i.e., what it is, etc.  They won't pay for Andrews or coding for that matter because they say:(1)  Its a work at home job.  (2) Its an online program and they ca ...

How To Pay For Andrews School?
Feb 10, 2015

If I could choose a school right now for coding, Andrews would be first choice.  I was hoping that someone could share some suggestions for paying for the course.  Right now AAPC is having a "sale" on their course which is now 50% off.  From my research, though, I think that would not be my first choice, but is muc more affordable than Andrews.  Has anyone used any of the Andrews payment plans?  How did that work out for you?  The cost seems prohibitive to me, but I ...

Question For The ANDREWS SCHOOL
May 10, 2010

Does the Andrews School curriculum go beyond what the AHIMA teaches?  I ask this question with the following (in quotations) in mind. "One common misunderstanding is that you will be ready to take the CCS exam once you complete your academic training and that is incorrect. You will be qualified to sit for the CCA exam upon completing your training program. The CCS and CCS-P are mastery credentials and reflect two to three years of full time coding experience beyond the academic preparatio ...

Question For Andrews School Grads

Okay -- I think I've made my decision to not go back to my local community college after I finish ICD-9 fall semester.  I just don't feel it is giving me what I need, and it is not preparing me to pass anything.  Most of the students in my class are taking coding as just another class they have to pass so they can move on to something else.  I am paying a lot of money because I'm out of state, and I don't feel like I'm getting value.  I've n ...

Coding Schools - Andrews

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search.
