Best coding course besides Andrews? - Wondering

Posted: Apr 09, 2015

Hello all.  I am not a troll and am truly wondering if there is a coding course that is more economic than Andrews but still TEACHES you to code?  I am an MT but have no experience with coding.  Please help!  Thanks so much.

I took a classroom AAPC course - sm - MT2coder

I didn't want to learn on-line; knew that wasn't for me. I found a highly credentialed woman who taught a course (so many hours classroom and so many hours studying on your own). I LOVED IT. I found her by researching through AAPC and she was local so I got lucky. When the course was over, we took the CPC exam and I passed. It took me a little time as I wasn't 100% pursuing a coding job but I secured a coding job and I actually do inpatient coding. They took a little time to guide me on the job, which they would have had to do with anyone, and I now am a coder full-time after being a transcriptionist for over 30 years. It was a nice transition for me and I am not sorry I made it.

Perseverence and don't be afraid to look for unique ways of getting credentialed, like I did. People will say you need your CCS and likely that helps a lot but I am one who did not and got in the door with my CPC, even for inpatient coding.

Good luck!

How much did it cost to have her teach you? - MT weighing options

How many hours a week was the course?

Any details you think would be helpful would be appreciated. We have a lot of coder jobs near where I live plus an AAPC Chapter.

AAPC is a valuable resource if there is a chapter - sm - MT2coder

I believe my course was once a week at 4+ hours a night then all the homework took hours as well. I think my teacher saw a niche by classroom teaching and she always has classes going. I think it was $1700 and that included the classroom and books and the exam costs. The course lasted at least 4 months and she even had an extra class to be sure we were prepared for the test. I had to travel an hour to the class but it was worth it for me.

I got signed up at the class for my local chapter and I went to those meetings and they really try to help you secure a job.

Santa Barbara City College - Online Course

I worked full time and took the courses part time so it took me three years but was able to fit it in since it was online.

Depends on what you want to do, and for what you get - Andrews is NOT even close

to being the most expensive.

If all you want is a CPC, take the AAPC course. There are people who get jobs with it, and there are people who don't. The unemployment rate for new CPCs was 25% a few years ago, but now seems to be down to about 1 in 10.

Is the AAPC course a how to course? - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
My understanding is the AAPC course is just getting you ready for the exam, an exam prep course. Do they actually teach you to code properly? Thanks!

On the AAPC website it should state a local chapter and classes offered. - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
Where I live it's an 80-hour course. I think they break it down into 1 day a week for 16 weeks, but that's just classroom time and doesn't include studying on your own.

I'm currently an online AAPC student for the CPC. I think with books it all came to under $2000.
There is no local chapter in my state - OP

that I can find. Does the online course teach you how to code or is it just an exam prep? Thanks!
There are more than 500 chapters. - What state????

That is incorrect ... It is not just an exam prep course. - Coder

[ In Reply To ..]
The AAPC courses are not just exam prep. They do teach how to code. However, they do so in a somewhat minimal fashion. Not much more is required for outpatient coding. It does not require the extensive set of inpatient guidelines, for example.

You are not going to get a solid background from them, since they do not teach A&P, pathophysiology, pharmacology, reimbursement, etc. That is why they do not qualify for the AHIMA exams.

(Please don't come back and claim that the tiny amount of med terms included in those courses is the equivalent of actual courses in AP, pathophysiology, etc. It absolutely is not. For that matter, please don't claim that you already know it all from MT. You absolutely don't.)

local college - anon

The way I'm going to do it probably isn't cheaper, but I have no money, so I needed a loan now that I can pay back later. So I'm going to take the health information tech program through my local college, get my RHIT certification. I can use that certification to go work at my local hospital; they have a coder trainee position. After 6 months of that, I can then start working as an inpatient coder at the same hospital.

Andrews Coding
Mar 21, 2015

I was wondering if anyone has taken the Andrews coding program and if so did you pass the exams? Did you land a job immediately after completing the course? How difficult are the exams and how long did it take to complete the course? I was an MT for years but now I am looking for other options as the MT field has changed way too much and is no longer financially doable for me. ...

Andrews School of Medical Coding and Transcription........... Just wanted to say a few words about Andrews School of Coding. 3 years ago I finished an AHIMA accredited program for Health Information, going through the program I realized there were some gaps that I needed to fill in on the coding end. I love AHIMA and being part of the organizaiton, and look forward to working in the field for a long time.  What I am finding with Andrews is that they offer an indepth, hands on training spe ...

Coding Schools - Andrews
Jul 14, 2011

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Based on my training at Andrews, I have not had a problem with employment tests, passing the RMT and CMT, etc., and with the coding program, as long as I study hard  and do the assignments, I believe that I will have the same experience. Based on the excellent training I received at Andrews, I am beginning to go through the coding course. The ...

CPC/CCS Coding Program Other Than Andrews
Sep 03, 2013

Does anyone know of a (non-degree) program other than Andrews that upon completion will allow you to be eligible to sit for the CCS and CPC exam. I have researched the Andrews program and think it sounds great and comes with awesome recommendations from this board. I just want to explore any other options available before I take the plunge. Not necessarily needing a degree, already have Masters in Health Administration. Thanks so much. ...

I Want To Consider Going To Andrews For Their Coding Program
Apr 27, 2015

and I think I'd enjoy the job (after researching for the past year). I really want to do something interesting for the rest of my working life (and still have a career rather than just a job like I do now), but now I'm starting to wonder if I am too old at 58.  I guess I'd get through the schooling in about 12 months, then take the CCS exam (takes time?) and then I say give myself up to a year to find a job (??).  That would mean I could be pushing 60 when I began.  ...

Can Andrews' Coding Course Be Completed In Less Than 12 Months?
Jan 24, 2011

I've been looking at both Andrews and Career Step for online coding classes.  One thing that I've noticed (other than the cost differences) is that the Career Step course can be completed in as little as 4 months.  It seems the Andrews course takes a minimum of 12 months.  Is it possible to complete it in less time or is that frowned upon?  If I had the extra money and time, I would probably be leaning toward Andrews (particularly since I already completed thei ...

Questions For Andrews Coding Graduates (sm)
Jan 08, 2013

I have been doing research on the various coding programs out there and before I spend a large amount of money on training, I want to ask former Andrews coding students a couple of questions. 1. Did you pass the certification exam(s) and, if so, did you feel like the schooling that you received prepared you for the exam? 2. Are you currently working as a coder and, if not, how long have you been actively looking for a job and have you been able to get job interviews. I realize that getting ...

Can Someone Compare Andrews To AHIMA Basic Coding Course?

they call this a 12-course basics.  it says 2000, plus you need an additional 290 +225 for the required anatomy and physiology course, which you must at least get a C before you can proceed with the coding.  they also suggest 35 a year for becoming a member.  books are also a lot extra, looks like.   says 4 clusters of 15-week courses, that is 60 weeks, yes?   anyone have experience with this course?  call me gun-shy, but this is the organization who threw MT unde ...

Is It Possible To Pass The CCS Exam Upon Completion Of The Andrews Coding Course?

From what I've read, the CCS exam sounds difficult and I'm curious if any Andrews grads passed the exam as soon as they were finished with the course. I guess really what I'm wondering is if the Andrews course prepares you enough to pass the CCS or is the course more geared toward the CPC. Andrews Coding Grads/students: Questions

Do I Need To Take An Actual Coding Course To Learn Coding?
Feb 26, 2014

My sister is taking an online coding course and complains that there is no real "teaching," that she's basically just doing the work in the work book and entering answers online, then taking an online chapter test.  This makes me wonder about the necessity of signing up for an actual course.  I would like to learn how to code, but to me, without any actual instruction, what's the purpose of signing up for one of these online courses? ...
