Question for coding students - sm
Posted: Jul 17, 2013
I'm looking into different coding programs. A local community college is teaching ICD-10, while Career Step, for example, is teaching ICD-9, but offering a "free ICD-10 FastTrack course to prepare you for the transition to ICD-10." Is it odd that Career Step is still teaching primarily ICD-9? What about Andrews? How are they handling this transition?
No, it's not odd - anon

You'll have to know both, ultimately. I don't know what Andrews is doing, but you can call and talk to Linda. She's very helpful.
Okay thank you. Do you know if... - OP

some places will still be using ICD-9 in 10/2014, or is it mandatory that ICD-10 is used? I would think it would take a while for all of the different facilities to get on board with this huge change.
Yes, I do know - sm

No, some facilities will not be sticking with ICD-9. That is not an option. Not if they want to get paid, anyway.
They have already had years to get used to the idea, including one extension. Unless the federal government does an about-face on this, the switch will happen.
I do think there is a small possibility that it will never occur. Various groups are lobbying for that. It is unlikely, though.
You are asking about what you should do. You have to learn both. There is no way around it, unless you want to be a sort of second-class coder unable to do anything using ICD-9. Do you want to be unable to code old claims? Do you want to never be able to understand data coded in ICD-9? What happens on Nov 23, when you have to recode a claim or figure out what is wrong with it? What happens in 3 years when someone asks you to retrieve old coded data?
Even more to the point, what exactly are you planning on doing between your course and Oct 1? Getting a job, for which you will need 9? Or twiddling your thumbs? Losing coder income every day?
And wouldn't employers think better of you if you could code in both?
You might be asking because you think it is twice as much work to learn both. That is actually not the case. The diagnosis coding part of ICD-10 is very similar to ICD-9. The diseases aren't changing. The classification system is not so much different as it is expanded. The numbering system is a little different, but that isn't a problem because we do not memorize numbers. It takes a few hours to transition from ICD-9 to 10 for diagnoses. Procedures take a little longer, but that only applies to inpatient coding, which most schools are not going to prepare you to do anyway.
Great info, thank you. - OP

I'm actually hoping to learn both for the exact reasons you stated. The community college course I was looking at is teaching 10, but it seemed very limiting to not know 9. Thanks again.

Coding Students May 19, 2013I am just wondering if any other coding students sometimes feel so overwhelmed, especially trying to work full time and study. I knew going into this that it wasn't going to be easy. My Dream Job And A Question For Coding Students Jun 08, 2010I just found this listing for a coder in my area. I think this is the kind of coder position I want when I: A) enroll in a coding program, B) graduate, C) get certified and D) get enough experience.
Here is my question: Are you learning software like what is mentioned below: Vision, Logician and Coding? Or would one probably learn those on the job at entry level?

Advising The New Coding Students Or Those Searching For Their First Job Nov 07, 2012
Coders who post on this board need to remind
themselves that it is basically for MTs who are networking.
A medical transcriptionist who is a coding student or has become a newly
certified coder has now learned in the last couple of days that:
1.
MT experience, other than medical
knowledge, means nothing in the coding world.
There IS a big difference between school coding and actual work.

Any Students In Coding Courses Found Mistakes? May 21, 2012I am almost done with a course that was put together by the credentialing organization. Now that I am almost done, I have gathered my notes on the course inconsistencies and incorrect answers to submit my comments to them so this doesn't happen to the next student. I would like to hear the coders' and students' thoughts on this. Doesn't someone take the entire course and fix/correct BEFORE it is offered as a course? ...
Andrews Coding Grads/students: Questions Feb 03, 2015Okay, I wrote the previous post, but I have a few more questions. Any help is appreciated.
How much does the coding program cost?
How long did it take you to complete, full-time or part-time?
Did you feel job-ready when you finished the course?
Are there any hidden fees for exams, etc.?
If you went the Andrews for MT as well, how would you compare the intensity of the two courses?
I did attend Andrews for medical transcription 8 years ago, and I loved the program then. That is why ...
Any VLC Students Out There? Dec 22, 2009Are any other VLC students out there hearing anything from VLC? (See my earlier post...) My emails don't seem to be getting through, I can't get hold of them on the phone - just voicemail - and they've not returned the message I left. Their forums are down so I ...
How Many MT Students Do You Think There Are? Mar 27, 2011I know that there are a lot of programs, but does anyone know how many actual students there are or new graduates each year?

For Other Andrews Students In Module III May 18, 2012Hi you all,
I hope there are some students in module III who are in the case studies or have graduated that can answer my question. I have just gotten into the intermediate case studies and am feeling totally LOST! I don't know if I am being intimidated or what. The multiple choice ones I don't have any problem with, but when I have to code the cases without the choices i'm floundering! It's funny how I thought I would remember a lot, but when it comes ...
Newbies And Students - About AHDI Credentials ... Jan 06, 2010A certificate of completion (of your course or education program) does not make you a CMT.
The AHDI (Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity) offers 2 different credentials: RMT (for those with less experience) and CMT. Both credentials require passing a challenge exam and continuing education credits to maintain (every 3 years).
If you think that it doesn't matter whether you obtain an RMT or CMT credential through the AHDI, just think of it this way:&n ...

Caution To Students And New Grads - Scam Alert - Do MT Work (Internship) For Free Mar 10, 2011There is still another scam company out there offering to help "train" students and graduates. They will kindly let you do their real work, the work clients are paying them for. This is unacceptable and unethical. It will not look good on your resume because potential employers do not look kindly on this. Hired For Coding/billing/transcription, But Told No Coding Aug 13, 2013Accepted a job, gave 2 weeks notice, and yesterday was my first day. I was to be helping out transcription (1000 jobs behind), and then sitting with billing and training with coding as their coder will be out on maternity leave in December. So I gave a proper 2 weeks' notice to my former employer (2 hours on the road there and back, low salary - now less than half distance and $3 more an hour) and starte ...

Coding School - Fate Of Coding Due To EMR Apr 10, 2012Wondering if there are any coders out there who can give me an idea of the fate of coding due to the EMR. Are there still coding jobs out there? Would it be wise to attend school for coding at this point or do you think it will be lost to the EMR eventually? Do I Need To Take An Actual Coding Course To Learn Coding? Feb 26, 2014My sister is taking an online coding course and complains that there is no real "teaching," that she's basically just doing the work in the work book and entering answers online, then taking an online chapter test. This makes me wonder about the necessity of signing up for an actual course. I would like to learn how to code, but to me, without any actual instruction, what's the purpose of signing up for one of these online courses? ...

MT To Coding Sep 27, 2010I've been an MT for going on 8 years now, and I've been throwing around the idea of taking a coding class. I would really like to have something else to fall back on, as it seems that MT'ing is going more and more to VR. There's a local coding class that begins in January for $1700, but I wanted to get some feedback of current coders before signing up. Is the demand for coders still fairly high? Is it hard to find a job as a newbie, even with already having experience in the ...
Is Coding The Way To Go?! Jan 19, 2011I have almost 12 years experience as an MT (turn 30 in a month ACK!) I have just started my research but I thought I would kind of get some pros and cons about it see if anyone had advice or thoughts on anyone thinking about it.
