My grandkids were playing games on my computer and now I have all kinds of popups and malware.  Any recommendations/suggestions would be greatly appreciated in how to get rid of this.

Malwarebytes has a free version that does a good job about cleaning out nasties. Make sure to go to the history tab and clear out the quarantine of whatever is found. Seriously consider getting a paid subscription, but check with your local computer shops as to how much they can get you a license for. Sometimes they are cheaper than buying directly from the vendor. I just got a lifetime license of Malwarebytes Pro for 20 bucks through a local shop.

Also, if you have a windows computer you get a complimentary subscription to Microsoft Security Essentials, which is antivirus/anti-malware. I swear by this.

Adwcleaner is also good. I will add that this will clean infected files from your registry. Make sure to restart your computer after cleaning.

If you have issues installing any programs mentioned above, you will need to reboot in safe mode with networking or download the programs to a thumb drive or data disk to install during safe mode. Viruses sometimes will prevent or cause issues with antivirus or anti-malware program installs so it cant be eradicated.

If other problems, respond back here and I will try to help what I can.

Free vs paid version - Backwoods Typist

Free versions are good for awhile, but a paid subscription often has better coverage. In this day and age, can you put a price on piece of mind of a protected computer? I'm not saying dump your life savings on antivirus or anti-malware programs. There are a ton of threats out there, more now than ever and more are being developed every day. Keep in mind that when it comes to antivirus and anti-malware, less is more. If you have Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes, that should cover adequately. If you get too many antivirus and/or anti-malware programs, they start to interfere with each other.

Make sure to keep definitions updated regularly and run full scans at least once a week. If a young child wants to use your computer, make sure to supervise their activity and carefully scrutinize anything they want to install or play. Often times, there are other things attached to the downloads, often viruses or trojans. They do not think about these things nor do they care. They just want to have fun. If you question anything about it, DO NOT download it.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free with a Windows computer. I have tried McAfee, Norton, Trend Micro and AVG and MSE has by far been the best. It does not use the resources of some antivirus or malware programs, and offers real-time protection.

Trojan Remover is also good to hunt down and remove trojans.

I appreciate this info too, thank you. And I will look up Trojan Remover, because that is what usually is found. As for the dislikes, we all hope you never have any computer malware on yours - because we know Malwarebytes will take care of it for us.

Not sure what there was to dislike, but whatever. Thanks for the laugh.

If it's about supervising young kids, that's a no-brainer. It's easy for them to get to websites that are obviously inappropriate (porn for instance) with a search that is perfectly innocent or a site that harbors viruses or other malware. And they DON'T care at a young age (6, 7 for example) about viruses or whatever nasty thing is attached...it's far from their mind. Chances are they don't even know what those are or why parents have to scrutinize everything they want to download or play. They just see it as parents being nosy.

Go ahead and dislike this post. It's the honest truth.
