Recent posts regardng "good companies, straight typing etc.i - ancient MT

Posted: May 16, 2013

I personally, am getting really tired of the posts regarding "who is the best company to work for, who offers straight tying as ooposed t to VR etc.  I now worK for a company that is straight typing only and pays weekly. and pays a decent wage.   I have also talked to MTSOs   within the last 2 months, that REFUSE t0 d0 VR, and the hospitals have agreed not to do VR.  What  may be a "good fit" for one person, is not going to be a good fit for another.  I  have been in this business over 30 years, have too many jobs on my resume to count, but I hope to  retire from this company.

Another MT mentioned and she did bring up the same points that I have.  There are to many people that are in this profession as a "hobby."  Again, you cannnot  be considered a responsible employee, if you are putting family obligations over work obligations.  If you had "an outside job," that employer would expect you to be working your scheduled hours, and taking care of personal busines, before work and after work and on your lunch break.

I have no problems eiither with people who wish to "home school" their children, but do NOT do so at the expense of your employer.  Schedule your time, that possibly your children and their obligations are taken care of during the day, and you work second or third shift.  Most copmapnies also want "weekend coverage."  Okay, get up early on Saturday morning, put in 2 hours, then go do your activities.  Same thing with Sunday, after chuch and family dinner, then put in a couple of hours then go and relax.  This is for people that may be ICs.  I will never go back to being an employee.  I don't need the insurance and I am a single person, so I can have that flexibility.

People wonder why "accounts disappear,"  I have given several reasons.  This is a job/career.  Yes, the companies that I had hoped to be with FOREVER, lost work reason being - hospitals work 24/7/365.  I may let my company know that I am not feeling well or whatever, lie down for a  short while, and if I feel better, I will work,

Precison Transcription hires in school and new grads.  Pay is 7 and 4.  You are not assigned work with them and it is "dog eat dog," to get straight typing at  7 cpl.   Enore-OK offers straight typing, but heaven forbid, you don'y contact them if problems (IC status, but bottom line, they want and expect a scedule).  There are other companes as well that offer straight typing or a 50/50 mix.

As an MT, you have to find the fit that is right for you.  If you worlk for a company for short time, then dont list hem on your resume (2-3 months or less).  I have also been hired with not taking a test.  That being the case, the MTSO is going to know in a short period of time, if you know your stuff.

Another thing too, and "been therem, done that" with MANY MTs.  No "sharing the family computer.  You need a computer dedicated to you and YOU only.  I have seen too many MTs, and "the kid was on my computer and screwed something up."  Hello,  that is called YOUR work computer,  No one, touches it.  I have a laptop  -- I will not go back to a desktop, and when I am done, it shuts down as mine.  I bought thiis workhorse for under $300 - last laptop I had was rent to own and lasted me 8 years.  I have a wireless keyboard and mouse and will NEVER go back to a desktop.

I have also seen MTs who want to get new computers.  Do NOT go with Windows 8  -- VERY few companies support it.  My computer had Windows 7 Home Professional on it and Microsoft was gracious enough to update me to Windows 7 Professional at no charge.

in parting, getting off the soap box and shutting up, is if you REALLY want to be an MT, then be a "SMART MT."  The company that I currently work for from the CEO to the techs, are all Indian  -- do I care?  No, I can call them, email them and commuicate with them.  I  felt my line count was off, and got an IMMEDIATE ressonse via email from the CEO telling the tech stff to  resolve the problem.  The company offers DD, I sent an email because I got my first check via "paper," weird too becaue it was super fast via snail mail/  it (got it Monday and drawn on BOA).

This too with me "draws a red flag."  MAILING  checks  -- NADA, NOPE etc.  I live in South  Florida.  My bank that I hve been with for years is "military based," closest  branch  14 hours away RT.  ANY MTSO who wants to pay by check, and not offer DD, is not whom I am going to work for.  If  they do not have an account with BOA or Wachovia/Wells  Fargo, then I don't work for them.

I apologize for this being long, part rant, but alsso being aware of  everything.  I wish the best of luck to my old friendros that are struiggling like me and for those that thought this profession was a dream job  -- there is NO  such thing

...I am no longer interested in being an "MT" or finding "good companies" and that hot mess of a rant (in my opinion) just confirmed my decision. I am just so saddened by what has happened to this "career," but the time to get out is now. Jumping from company to company trying to find that extra "1 cpl" just isn't worth it because this is a dying field. Again, this is just my opinion. In the meantime, I'm off to study some more in my new field...so close to being an ex-MT I can taste it! :)

Can you share what that new field is? SM - mtwith6yearstogo

you and every other disgruntled MT. Good luck with that.
So, how's MT working out for you and what are you doing about it? - Just curious

While I'm studying coding, I am still an MT and if (BIG if) MT turns around, I will still be an MT. If not, I will be a CCS, CPC, CMT with many options. Sometimes it's just better to improve on your skills, you know be proactive?

As my subject says...I thought I wanted out of MT. My kids were grown, I had done this work for 20 years, let me go work in an office with people and a regular salary. Two years later I HATE it...hate the politics, the fact that some people get by doing in the minimum but can make themselves look like shining stars, the having to practically0 beg to get time off...I'm looking to come back home. Glad I kept my part time transcription job. If you're used to working at home and making your own schedule, you may not be able to go back and deal with the 9-5...I feel trapped every single day I get up and go to work.

Careful what you wish for - Another long time MT

Your story proves that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence, I think other MTs who "wanted out" are discovering the same thing. One office survival tip that took me many years to learn: What other people do has nothing to do with you, there are always going to be people who "get by" with the bare minimum, that is the manager's problem. Just worry about your job and not someone else's. It is too bad, but office politics occur everywhere to some extent, it's always better not to get involved. Anyway, sorry it was not a good experience and I'm glad you kept your part-time job.

Windows - Just wondering

There is no such thing as Windows 7 Home Professional. It is either Windows 7 Home or Windows 7 Professional. What is a friendro?

When I boght the laptop, it had "home edition." I could NOT do updates. Comany that I was going to work for wanted 7 Pofessional -- got it downloaded for nothing,

A little confused with what you're trying to say... - MTSearching

Not to be snarky, 'cause I personally hate snark, but your post is all over the place. On the one hand, you're sick and tired of MTs searching for their best fit and asking questions, yet you're informing them "to find the fit that is right for you." With no other contact with other people in this industry, wouldn't this board be the logical place to at least do a preliminary search? Wouldn't communication with others who've been in the trenches be a good idea?

Yes, there are probably those who work part time to supplement their incomes, but I think it's bogus to claim that MTs can work in this industry as a mere "hobby." All of the companies I have worked for require excellence, as well as a certain number of lines in production.

Really, are you blaming the MT for the overall decline of the industry? Is it the MT's fault that greedy companies off shored work or that technology is developing rapidly and replacing us? MTs are being hammered on two fronts!

I hate to be a broken record but... - just saying

You said: Is it the MT's fault that greedy companies off shored work or that technology is developing rapidly and replacing us? MTs are being hammered on two fronts!

The short answer is 'no' it's not the MT's 'fault'... While people are looking to place blame, please, please remember this is isn't personal it's business, i.e., they do whatever makes them more money.

The greed part? That's called capitalism. Until society rejects the notion that free markets MUST subscribe to capitalism, what we see in the MT industry is par for the course.

Any Companies Doing Straight Typing Anymore?

I have over 15+ years experience but stopped working in November of 2010 to be at home with my two young boys and give them my full attention. Are There Any Companies Still Out There That Hire For Straight Typing?
Apr 21, 2014

I've given VR a fair shot for close to a year now, but I still type much faster than I edit, so I've lost quite a bit of money since my account went to VR last year.  I know that VR is almost everywhere these days, but does anyone know of any decent companies that still have straight typing and are actually hiring right now?  I'm looking for acute care and I really don't care if it's IC or employee status at this point.  I just want to do regular transcrip ...

ASR Vs Straight Typing

Got new accounts for the last 2 weeks that are not ASR (yet) so have been doing about 90% straight typing.  I have been averaging about $20 more per day than when I do ASR.  They can sell whatever snake oil they want, I can type faster and make more money straight typing than I can with their much-touted fabulous ASR --- EVEN ON BRAND NEW UNFAMILIAR ACCOUNTS.  ...

Why Suddenly Less ASR, More Straight Typing?
Nov 19, 2009

Hmm, let's see.  We get a letter from MQ extolling our virtues as MTs, more and more info about nationalizing the EMR with Verizon, etc. and I notice I'm not the only one getting less ASR, more direct typing.  Could be a coincidence, but could be MQ is gathering statistics on us, how the voice recognition program of MQ compares with our production as MTs versus straight typing on our own.  Could MQ be using us as guinea pigs right now to pad their statistics to prove the ...

Re Straight Typing Versus VR.
Mar 08, 2012

I have a pretty good and accurate typing speed, which has made me pretty good money in the past.  Then along comes VR.  I have had somewhat success with it, if the right dictation is placed on it.  The problem comes in when a company tries to put anything and everything on VR that does not belong there.  It defeats the purpose of using it in the first place. I am told that the computer calculates the accuracy of a report.  If it is 80% or more, it goes on VR.  ...

VR Is NOT Twice As Fast As Straight Typing!
