MT Week "gifts" from our employers - Long time MT

Posted: May 21, 2010

I've been reading these posts about the trinket trash as one person called it (good name) that MTs are receiving from their employers.  My employer sent nothing, which if you think about it is less insulting than some of the garbage that has been sent out.

The whole issue reminded me of something, I couldn't think what, until it finally dawned on me.  It's like the white man giving the Native Americans trinkets and baubles for their assistance or their land or their resources.  Of course, that was a million times worse, but I'm saying it's like that.  The MTSOs would not be living the life they are living were it not for all of us hard-working MTs who every year see our income or our benefits continue to be cut, but they seem to think if they flash some cheap piece of garbage at us, we'll go "ooooh" and feel appreciated.  Sorry, we don't.

And for those of you who are relatively new to the field and too young to remember, MTs got along very well, thank you, before MTSOs came on the scene.  Actually, we did better before they came on the scene.  I think they need to be reminded that they need us far more than we need them....and their baubles.

I agree - see message

I work for a trinket company as an employee and also work as an IC for extra income. Yes, I have to work 2 jobs!

What is funny is the IC company sent nothing, but I wasn't at all offended by that. Why? I can do 30 reports, which takes me about 5-6 hours and I average about $100-130. I get paid decent and that is enough appreciation for me.

With company I work for as an employee, I have to do 60-70 reports, which takes way over 8 hours and I average $60-80. That is of course if the work is there. I also have to pay a bundle for insurance, so my checks are pretty bad. Most days I put in 10 hours only to make $44 bucks.

My IC company only has PT work right now and they don't over hire. I got hired to work a certain amount of hours and the work is always there during my shift. No need to "flex" my schedule. I would love to work FT as an IC, but I also need benefits.

Anyway, my point is - if you are treated fairly, have enough work with decent pay, can work a proper 8-hour shift, and get treated like a human being, there isn't a need for trinkets. Trinkets with a company logo on it is designed for marketing, not gifts. Vendors give these away for free so you will remember them. My husband's company gets tons of this stuff. We have tape measures, note pads, pens, travel mugs, and even more advanced roach clips and better starfish. They are given because people want your business.

For the trinket MT company - we already drank the Kool Aid - we work there. You already have our labor.

Something is missing here... - old mt

I think a really nice thank you for all you do card in the mail would be a nice thing to do. After all it is the thought that counts. As someone who didn't even get a thank you e-mail I would have appreciated it a nice letter - albeit a form letter with the name changed on each sent. With bulk mail it wouldn't have costs too much! From what I hear on the boards this week - it's like going to the dollar store and buying whatever and sending it people - not much thought behind it....

I agree with the card thing... - anonforthisone

I'm new at this company but I'll have to say the gift seemed downright weird to me. Two actual old license plates made up into 1) a photo album and 2) a DVD/CD holder. And heavy - cost 5 dollars to be sent out to each of us. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. My first thought: Were they made by prisoners in the state pen (not that this matters, mind you). I perceived a deeper meaning (I feel like a prisoner some days working for this company, ha-ha). Again, weird. Anyway, a card would have been more than sufficient. Or maybe a coupon for a free pizza, ha-ha, that I could appreciate.

MT Week With Gifts And ?recognition.
May 18, 2010

I'm wondering with all these little trinkets sent, or not....with all the little games throughout the week, why is it we don't hear a peep out in the "real world" about MT week?  It was established in 1985, but nowhere except on the AHDI website is it being promoted.  Type "national transcription week" in google and click pn search news, and the only things that come up are about how clients are trying to cut costs (usually by eliminating us).  Click on search the web, a ...

Xmas Bonuses / Gifts

Personally not expecting anything, just curious if anyone else was lucky.  Last year we got a cookbook compiled by various people in the company that we got to print off ourselves.  Don't think they can top that.  However, on the upside this company keeps me in work and pays well.  I can't complain, or at least I shouldn't.  Let's hear it from anyone who did get or will be getting a little momento in the spirit of gift giving. ...

No So Professional Regarding Shower Gifts

I just do not think its professional to send out emails regarding gifts for a baby.  If so many people asked why not just send them an email via their own personal email or a phone call.  Why do we all have to know where we can register for gifts.  They are not so employee friendly with us in other ways.  Think about it.  ...

Where Have All The Employers Gone?
Jan 21, 2011

Even though I just let my AHDI membership expire, I was still due one more issue of their journal, Plexus, which I received today. In previous issues, I always scanned the "Employers Guide" pages in the back of the journal, and there were many  employers listed - at least two pages' worth. This newest issue, however, lists only seven. Perhaps the rest went overseas? ...

2 Jobs At Once 2 Employers
Oct 15, 2009

I have been an MT for about 4 years now.  I have been working with one employer doing speech editing transcribing 3200 lines per 8-hour shift.  However, I just received a 2nd job from a different employer working part-time and they pay more.  My question is one employer needs my computer to have Word 2003 on it for their program to work and the other employer needs my computer to have Word 2007.  How can I do both jobs at the same time.  Has anyone done this before and i ...

Rude Employers
Jan 19, 2011

Are the rest of you as disgusted as I am with not hearing back after sending an application?  Are all these ads for work just made up to look like there are jobs when in reality the ads are fakes?  I hear from so many other MTs/editors that they apply for jobs but never hear back, even after receiving permisson to do testing.  Maybe we should all stop applying and let them sit and spin! ...

Employers' Platforms
May 14, 2011

Has anyone here turned down a job with an MTSO because their platform is crappy? My employer's platform is TERRIBLE!!  You have go through 15 mouse commands (no hot keys!) to perform the simplest function such as signing off a job.  I have never seen more inefficient software in my life!!  Of course, since they own it now they claim it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.... Would love to hear your platform stories!! ...

Are The Remaining In-house Employers Discriminating

at home for MTSOs?  Some ads seem to want X-number of years of RECENT on-site MT experience.  Others don't say that, but with so many failed job applications this past year, even for areas that I've specialized in for 20 years, I'm getting no interest, and often no replies at all.  In addition to having more than 20 years' experience, do you think these employers have a problem with work-at-home MTs?  Like maybe they see us as undisciplined, poorly trained ...

Why Do People Post "thank You Notes" Here To Their Companies For Christmas Gifts? Sm
Dec 20, 2010

I sincerely doubt that the company big shots are reading the postings here, plus the anonymity wouldn't make your thank you mean much.  I would think it more appropriate to send a handwritten thank you note, which is what I used to do when I worked for TransTech. I'm glad your comany sends you gifts.  In this day and age, most of us are just lucky to have a job.  Still, it kinda rubs it in to those of us who work for Scrooge companies who treat us like piece worker ...
