Is this a joke or what ? - RLee

Posted: Feb 16, 2010

I received an email the other day and it read "I was wondering if you would be interested in typing for a neurosurgeon" with a copy of my resume posted on the bottom.  My reply back was "I would need the specifics, the company you are affiliated with, etc - I do have 17 plus years experience with neurology so it is probably something I would be interested in, but send more info, and then I will forward my phone number if necessary."  The reply back from the unknown sender was "I have my own company. I have three girls working for me. Have been in business for 15 years. I work with a very large neurology group."  That was it - lol - and again my response back was " What is the name of your company??  It is US based??  Employee status or IC, etc.  I need more specifis - do you need my phone number to further discuss details??  I have neurology experience, but need more specifics so as to know if it is something I am interested in."  This is laughable.  Obviously this person got my resume off a board that I have posted it on, which one I do not know, as I have the resume posted on several.  My god - why would I now be interested with such little info being offered.  I have yet to hear back a response from my last email to this unknown person.  Has anyone else had this happen to them by posting a resume on a job boards related to MTs??  I would like to know the name of this person's company.

informal contact - pip

I work with a small company that has been in business doing local accounts for 15 years or so. I have worked for a few nationals and keep up on business reading boards like these and reading trade magazines. Before I started working with this little company the owner had never heard of any other nationals besides Medquist, didn't know what ESL meant, and had no formal contact or hiring practices. It wasn't that she was stupid, she was just busy in her own little local world and had always hired very informally. She has a good (albeit small) business going and always pays on time, etc. She just doesn't have the formal contact and hiring practices that many of us are used to. It sounds like the person who contacted you may be in a similar position. I wouldn't blow it off just because you were contacted so informally. You may be passing up a great opportunity.

I would like to have more info - they have not gotten back to me as of last night. I will wait and see if I get a response and if not email them and see if they can offer more info. I would rather work for a smaller company believe me !!!! Thanks for your input - this type of informal contact is new to me - I guess I am from the old school. :)

I would never work for anyone who refers to MTs as "girls". - Snickers

How insulting that is. nm
To Snickers - Woman, not a Girl
[ In Reply To ..]
Like you, I would never work for someone who refers to women as "girls." Does he call the men in his office "boys?" In any event, it sure sounds like a scam to me. To the OP: RUN!
RLee - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I disagree with the above posters. I work for a woman now who, like another poster stated, is extremely busy with her own smaller business and she refers to her employees as "the girls." I take no offense at being called "the girls," enjoy working for this woman and would be concerned about passing up a wonderful opportunity. Absolutely be very wary since they have not given you further information; however, do not give up on it totally. The woman I work for is not as "formal" as the mid-size or large companies but she pays on time, is easy to work for and has great accounts. What more could anyone ask for, other than winning the lottery and getting out of this industry totally, lol.

Good luck to you and let us know if you hear anything else!!

Seriously? Y'all get hung up on some of the most inane things in the world.

First, if ya gots a vajayjay you're a girl.

Second, there's been nothing shared that indicates this MTSO is a male.

Perhaps all the nationals have many of you jaded, but as someone said, this could just be a person who doesn't spend countless hours online learning the lingo and who simply is inundated with work (thus the short answers), looking for someone to add to her "girls" and wants someone who has the ability to help her out.

Give the MTSO a break, y'all complain when there's no work and no y'all are complaining when it's offered.
And I find your answer almost more insulting. - Snickers
[ In Reply To ..]
So what if I have a particular body part? I AM NOT A GIRL, not to this employer, not to you, not to anyone. I am a potential EMPLOYEE who asks to be treated with respect.

Y'all take that anyway Y'ALL WANT IT.

I guess in my opinion it depends on who the person is calling MTs "girls." At one of my prior jobs the supervisor was a great person (female) and called the MT dept her "girls." But on the other hand at neurology when the supervisor called us girls I was offended by it, as he was a male. But all in all - I just was wondering if this was some sort of a scam, as at one point I had my resume posted on cragslist and got loaded with job offes that did not even pertain to my resume so pulled the resume off that list within 3 days.
The "girls" - feminist
[ In Reply To ..]
Calling a woman a "girl" is like calling a man of color "boy". It is a way to keep us in our places, and it is an odious, horrible practice that ought to have stopped a long time ago. Sexism, like racism, is terrible.
Thank you, thank you, thank you - cc

There will now be snark after snark saying how awful we are, but I for one appreciate this. Women have died to get the most basic rights, including the right to vote or not to be our husbands' "property", and it makes me sad how so many of us now are so willing to give those rights away--not only without a fight, but to HAND them over. Sermon over.

[ In Reply To ..]
COO of a certain MTSO, who also happened to be the recruiter, said that until MTs start acting like professionals and joining AHDI, going to seminars, conventions, etc., we would be nothing more than COMMODITIES.

Can you believe that? At least being called a body is being called something human and alive. This one actually outright admitted that we were viewed as $$ and nothing more.
Disgusting, but at least an honest remark. NM - deb

My opinion is that we have every right to be suspicious - Job Seeker

[ In Reply To ..]
I must be old school too because I would not reply to a contact that gave little information but wanted mine. I have been burned on Craig's list etc. in the past. There are too many scammers out there acting like they have legit jobs to get your information. The next thing you know your asked to pay fees to apply and/or the spam and junk emails start rolling in once they have your email. I am VERY cautious to whom I give out information now.
OR even use a piece of info to figure out - (CAUTION!!) sm

where you live. There is a lot of danger in this world and you must be careful. With decades in this business, I would guess this was NOT a legitimate employer.

RLee---Just wondering, did you start your new job yet? - Job Seeker

[ In Reply To ..]
You got another job, right? I was just wondering if you started and if you love it. Did you give Transcend the boot? Hope so and good for you.

To just wondering - RLee

[ In Reply To ..]
I have not started yet, as I am waiting for Angel's Transcription to acquire more accounts and yes I will wait for them to come in, as I feel the opportunity she has given me is not something I want to pass up. As far as Transcend - check my work pool a couple of times a day now as opposed to sitting for hours on end - needless to say it is always empty - lol- I have a feeling they will be giving be the formal boot soon, as I cannot even comply to their requirements for PT status. So will just have to keep plugging along as I am now and wait for the right opportunities, so as not to jump from the frying pan into the fire.

RLee - Nick

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't quit Transcend. Let THEM give YOU the boot. Then you can go to the unemployment office as well as the Labor Board and collect not only unemployment but also renumeration for all of the hours you have had to sit without work. They used you--now you get to use THEM. Go for it!
To Nick - RLee
[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks for your support - I have no intentions of quitting Transcend, as I am now collecting partial unemployment and will not jeopardize that due to that is all I have to fall back on at the moment. I have contacted the Dept of Labor and will post any new developments, as I feel the info will be useful to MTs in the same boat that I am in.
RLee - Nick
[ In Reply To ..]
Good for you! I hope you stick it to them. They earned a good bit of their 16 mil on the backs of MTs like you and all of us and it is about time we spoke up for ourselves. The MDI MTs were sold down the river.
Be careful because if you are fired you may not get sm - Sima
[ In Reply To ..]
unemployment. It might be different by each state, I am not sure about that. As long as you have documented everything then great, but if you haven't all they have to do is say they fired you for whatever reason and your unemployment can be denied.
That will not happen - RLee
[ In Reply To ..]
Well if Transcend thinks for one minute they have a leg to stand on then good luck to them becauuse I do have everything documented with pay stubs and my correspendence via emails with them. With that said they have a big fight on their hands because I do not back down when I have been shoved in a corner beyond my control, but believe me Transcend will try to paint a different picture. It has been made obvious to me today that Transcend now knows who RLee is and are already trying to cover their devious actions, but they will not have to answer to me -they will have to explain their actions to the Dept of Labor, as I have been collecting partial unemployment for 6 weeks. There is more to be said on this topic regrarding correspondence via email from Transcend today. Stay tuned !!!!

The reason theyre not giving you company specifics - is because theyre obviously OFFSHORE. nm

BE VERY CAREFUL - yochana

This can be a legit business or a ripoff. I have heard many, many times of "supposed companies" like this who hire MTs and never pay them for their work. If you can't get a background check on her then be very very leery.

Why are you spreading crap? - huh?
[ In Reply To ..]
There are 3 phone numbers listed on that site: An 800 number, a fax number, and the owner's number.

307 is a Wyoming area code (where she is located), not Ohio.

Stop stirring the pot.

yochana - Nick

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I saw the website, too and thought it was very unprofessional. If I were a doc I would not trust my work to her. The image is all wrong.

If you Google the 307 # she has on the site, sm - uninvolved

[ In Reply To ..]
There is a link that states people in Wyoming are getting calls from this # and are either getting breathing on the phone or someone from the VFW.

Angel's Transcription - RLee

[ In Reply To ..]
My original post had nothing to do with Angel's Transcription - I have talked to her personally on the phone and tested for her company. I am the one that applied for a positon at her company through a job she had posted on an MT related job board - she did not originate the correspondence to me unlike the unknown sender regarding my original post. Angel's Transcription is a US based company out of Burns, Wyoming. My intentions were not to bash Angel's Transcription - as some people are turning this into. I will be working for her in the near future and am looking forward to it. My original post was to share an email I had received regarding my resume, which I found suspicious - I just wanted some input as to if anyone else has experienced this same thing by posting a resume on an MT job board. Thank you all for your input. With that said, I will be forwarding the email address of the unknown sender to the moderator of this board at their request to protect all of us. I do not know how the unknown sender got my resume, as I have it posted on several MT job related web sites. I have a funny feeling who may be behind this and I hope my suspicions are incorrect !!!!

yochana - Nick

[ In Reply To ..]
Before I would work for someone like this supposed "Angel," I would require them to give me a certified financial statement for the business. I would then contact the CPA who prepared it and do a background check. They check on us--surely we can check on them!

No MTSO should solicit you via email. SM - Moderator

Hospital Pay--is This A JOKE?

Okay, so halfway out of curiosity, I applied to my local hospital, which is a large regional hospital, for an MT job.  They wanted a "seasoned" MT with CMT, who transcribes 250 lines an hour.  Okay, I thought, they might actually compensate better than I think since they have well-defined high standards.  WRONG!  They are offering $11.35 AN HOUR!  What a slap in the face!  You get a whole extra dollar if you work 2nd shift.  What an insult--they just have ...
