Can I just say what a freaking JOKE speech recognition is? - SM

I work for a hospital that has been using the Dictaphone speech the last couple of years. We were told how our production was just going to increase and how it was going to be WONDERFUL. My production is still where it was two years ago and I would be better off typing each report.

Sorry for the ranting, but while working this evening, I just got set off by the following:

"SOCIAL HISTORY: He is down to 15 cattle formally worked as a strips all conservation engineer. He is married to smokeless tobacco in the past. Denies alcohol."

This is from a completely American, completely clear as a bell dictator who has been on speech rec for the last year at least. We were told that once we edit the dictators speech generated reports a few times, the engine will "learn" that particular dictator's style and we should have few corrections blah, blah, blah.

All the while I get emails from my supervisor telling me that while I'm producing above the minimum requirement, with speech rec I should and could really be making a lot more with incentive pay. WHATEVER!

I love seeing these posts. Unfortunately, VR is here to stay I'm afraid. Have a radiology job that going VR. I'll probably quit. I'll be doing the same work for half the pay. It stinks.

Editing isn't for everyone (sm) - Editor

While most everyone can type, we all know it takes a special person to be a successful MT, as I am sure you are. However, not everyone can edit, whether it either quickly or successfully, or even both. It's an ear-finger to screen versus an ear-eye-finger to screen issue, in my opinion. Not everyone is good at detecting errors and some are excellent, fast typists but can't see errors that easily and have to work harder at finding them.

So don't feel bad -- you've got to find a way to get quicker at it somehow. Maybe switch jobs and platforms??? If that's not an option, then maybe ask the sup for some tips or additional training on the platform if you think the shortcuts could help you more.

I think of it this way, say you were working flipping burgers and were fast and great at it. Then one day they put you on the front line taking orders at the drive-thru window. You've got to input the orders, take money, make change, fill drinks, all while taking the next order. Does it mean you'll be as successful at that as you were flipping burgers, no. There are 50 things coming at you at once, and it takes different skills to do that. Companies need to take this into consideration here. We're not all created equal. Some are faster typists -- some faster editors.

Very good points. Unfortunately, I think the OP was pointing out the gibberish VR can produce. In that instance, one will lose money no matter how efficient they are at editing. Everyone would have to highlight, delete, and retype that whole sentence (i.e. straight typing but being paid VR). I can imagine what the whole report must have been like.

that her sup was talking to her about. I know how editing works and for sure it's frustrating and you often have to delete what it says.

However, your success can and does really depend on your platform and your editing speed, of course in conjunction with your dictators' effectiveness. Sometimes you can tweak, sometimes there's nothing you can do. I've been editing probably as long as anybody, probably longer than most, and I have stuck to what works successfully for me. Some platforms are great at SR, most not.

people who were fast, were fast on every single station they were put on - didn't matter if they were at the window or flipping burgers. If you're fast and accurate, you're fast and accurate.

It's not the MT's fault at all they can't get up to speed on an inefficient, poorly-thought and poorly-executing VR system. Also, the pay is too low, productivity gains not there as promised. It's not finding errors, it's having to type in whole PHRASES that drop out, all the "ers" and "ums" that get recognized as words, the wrong headers put in automatically and incorrectly, mis-recognizing drugs etc.

If I understand you correctly then, you're saying that: #1 all MTs who can type fast can edit fast, #2 all platforms are the same, and #3 all MTs are the same, which are all incorrect. I am proof of that.

I would challenge any MT to work on the platform I am using and be able to produce more than the bare minimum! It is ridiculous!

Does anyone realize that time and energy it takes to listen to the dictation, read what the the SR interpreted, and then highlight, delete, and edit that completely flawed and most times complete WRONG interpretation? Versus simply listening to the dictation and an MT typing it right the first time?

Last night I was so frustrated because I got one crappy SR report after another with complete and utter gibberish over and over and over. And I just snapped!

Since upper management seems to think Speech recognition and total EMR is this glorious wave of the future, then I say let the doctors see a completely unedited report and let them edit themselves and see how long it takes them!

I am so getting out of this business. I enrolled in a medical coding program and I am going double my study efforts so I can finish quicker. If I don't get out, I am going to have a freaking stroke!

Well, who in their right mind would even WANT to 'edit' that and other voice-recognition interpretations. Anyone in their right mind, who is educated in A&P, medical terminology, etc., etc., would be simply crazy to do this work -- JMHO. I mean 'transcription editors' in reality are not 'editors.' The title 'editor' is a professional title given to journalism individuals, who are writers and manage magazines and newspapers. Knowledge has nothing to do with whether a person 'can do' transcription editing; choosing to actually put up with this mess is more like the choice being made. I don't understand why a person has a need to feel that important as to put up with transcription 'editing' for pennies. Go figure. JMHO :-)

When I get nothing but VR reports and have to change every second word, it is so hard getting even minimum wage and it is just so much more exhausting than regular typing where you get into a rhythm and I get so many bad dictators doing VR. On a report, under "social history", the speaker says the patient lives alone with some pets. Speaker dooesn't actually state anything further regarding pets, but the document says "7 cats" right after where it says patient lives with pets. My job is transitioning to from straight transcription to speech recognition. This is what is being offered: 0.045 per line A line is defined as 2 edited lines = 1 regular MT typing line of 65 characters So in summary, 1. My cents per line is going to be cut in half going to SR editing. 2. The edited lines is also being cut in half because it takes 2 edited lines to equal 1 transcribed line. Does this sound right? that I THINK might be 3M- I don't know, everyone here at the hospital just calls it BESR- they say it is a new program but it just seems almost like some generic deal. I have been straight transcribing for many moons. Then got into doing QA and a lot of the reports I get are straight editing of speech recognition rather than doing QA. Why is transcription done for a full report paid any differently than transcription done in a speech report?
