Is anyone making a living anymore? - Ugh

Posted: Jul 25, 2014

After 15 years I decided to hang it up and gave up MT work when VR pay was so low and the jobs were few and far between.  My yearly income was cut more than half.  I've often wondered if anyone is still able to make a living doing MT work.  I don't miss it at all, just wondering.

living - not anymore

just saw my paycheck for the second half of July and my 2 checks for July did not come close to covering my monthly expenses, they did a couple months ago, but no more. And I am on vacation this week so will have a smaller check yet next time. I just got my deceased husband's social security check last week, which is just enough to cover my expenses. This is so sad.

I'm about 400 bucks short this month. That means I won't be able to pay a few bills and then I will be behind and will get late fees and then be even more behind. I don't know what I'm going to do. I have a small child to take care of and I'm so stressed out and worried about her. I've applied to so many jobs around my area from receptionist to data entry to babysitting and no one contacts me for an interview or anything. I just can't take this anymore.

I've been doing MT for 17 years, now trying to get out for a year. I previously did AP/AP billing, was a claims adjuster, so those are the positions I am applying for. I took MT work to be home with my babies who are teenagers now. Cannot make a living doing this anymore, barely making minimum wage. Applying for lots of jobs, but everyone wants RECENT experience in other fields, can't even get an interview. I can't even get staffing agencies to call me when I sign up on their websites and attach my resume. My advice to anyone in MT, GET OUT and once you can STAY OUT. It's a joke what industry has done to us.

Not anymore. - sm

I was one of the lucky few who had a great job with what I felt was a great company making $20-25 an hour. I had been on my primary account for nearly 10 years and felt extremely comfortable with it, so the work was relatively stress free. Then all of a sudden, the work completely dried up. I sat for a week with no work, and when I emailed the account manger, she said it was just the typical summer slowdown and it would pick back up. But after working this account for so long, I knew that wasn't true. It was never this slow, even when they overstaffed. The next day, we all got notice that the account went to EMR and we were out of work.

I have now started with a new company who wanted me to commit to full-time hours, which I did as I need to be working full-time, but in the last week I have only had work 2 days for a total of 1000 lines. I went from making $20+ an hour to $10 an hour and have no idea how we are going to pay for anything with my paycheck. We were already behind as my hubby has also been out of work. He has been doing temp jobs, but those pay very little too. I don't know how we are going to make it. Our car is on its last breath, and if it dies, we are really in trouble as then even hubby can't work as we live an hour from the nearest town. I have cried about every day since losing my job as I just don't know what to do. My family depends on my paycheck and now it is gone.

I really want to go back to school to get out of this mess, but at this point I can't afford it. I have the opportunity to get a scholarship for tuition but would still need to cover books and supplies. So that feels unobtainable. I have tried other at-home jobs, but the pay is so little, I don't know how anyone survives on that.

I am trying to stay positive, but it is so hard. I really loved my company, but they screwed us over by not giving us any warning when I hear they knew at least a month in advance. How can anyone do that to all these families? Just want out of this whole career now. Don't want to work for these companies that couldn't care less for their workers.

went from $25+ an hr to minimum wage - sm

now poverty level and there is just me and my cat. It is a crying shame what has happened to our once GREAT profession. I have been doing this for 40 years and never in my wildest imagination did I see this coming. I was hoping to retire but can't. So I guess will keep punching keys till I die.

I was hoping NOT to retire, but to keep working - til I was at least 70+. SM:

[ In Reply To ..]
But MTSO work pay dwindled down to nothing, and I was staying afloat on side-gigs, any low-income help I could get, and handouts from friends & family. Then I lucked into a high-paying inhouse MT job, which was great while it lasted. Loved the job, the people, and especially the PAY. But then they suddenly switched to an EMR that needed no transcription or VR editing at all, and we were unceremoniously thrown out like yesterday's garbage.

A year later, I still can't find work. I'm not looking in MT any longer - that's an exercise in futility. But at near-retirement age, I can't find very many jobs that would use my existing skill set, with a minimum of other training. Those that do, always hire either a relative, or a young person.

So now I still do the side-gig, still accept handouts, have become an expert scavenger, have no health insurance, and will likely just bite the bullet and take my SS early, as soon as I qualify for it. It won't be much, but since I've already gotten pretty good at living on nothing, then "not much" will be a definite improvement.
SM...With you too. What to do when you still want to work, yet they tell you to retire at 70. - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
IF you make it to 70. Lucky now if your job is still there, you have your health, as otherwise you are a liability and they want you gone. American dream becomes a nightmare. After years one sees what health care has really become. Many are forced into early retirement.

yup - still hanging in

[ In Reply To ..]
Still keeping pace with last year, close to $60k. Working one job as an employee about 30 hours a week and a job as an IC about 20 hours a week.

Ugh...did that too, and not a good idea. You will lose in the end - maybe

[ In Reply To ..]
Worked the 2 jobs for many years, but should have done just the full time and gotten the benefits and the 401K with matched shavings. Now...no benefits. Services are a crock. Doctor's offices also gave no benefits to you doing their work. Now we are definitely being used. Should have, could have, would have chosen a different job.

lol who dislikes someone still hanging in - amazeballs

I wish the OP would state only miserable people allowed to reply and agree with me.

There seems to be a few out there from what I've - read here, but obviously

This line of work has changed drastically, the demand has decreased, payscale has dropped and hospital jobs are extremely hard to come by anymore. There are some MTs who live in areas where the hospitals still have their own MTs, but for the most part it's just not xommon; 95% outsource to MTSOs.

So that on top of the fact everything is centered around technology now has pretty much made this job only good for part-time supplemental income. MTSO jobs are the absolute worst in my opinion; more abd more of them are lowering rates to 3cpl for VR. I left MT almost 2yrs ago.

supplemental - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Nothing wrong with part-time supplemental income. Some people can use it. As far as 0.03, I saw that somewhere too. At least it helps us to be competitive in the world job market, which is good.

Competative at 3 cents!!! To what 1 cent? - rediculous

[ In Reply To ..]
Dumb comment. Nothing wrong with part time...not if you want to see retirement from years of hard work and dedication. Just chump change...then go for it. Don't leave your husband and your meal ticket then either.
LOL! I didn't quite know what to make of that comment - either. Sure supplemental is
[ In Reply To ..]
Fine if that's all you need, but not if this job is your bread and butter and your trying to pay the bills.

And 3cpl is hardly competitive here in the United States, where the cost of living is high and the economy is suffering. 3cpl is actually pretty insulting and depressing.

the same attitude from a woman whose husband was retired from an industry and had a pension. She was living high on the hog in comparison to us and still had the nerve to be out there looking for work and bitching. Last I heard she sold her house in Florida and was building one in New York. She was an MT from way back before we needed formal training and when the money "rolled in" (her words not mine). She called this "pin money." I, on the other hand, need this money to eat. Yes my husband works, but his pay barely covers the bills and sometimes not even then. We need this income and not for supplemental reasons. We juggle every week which bills have to be paid before services are shut off or we loose insurances. This is our reality and I bet the reality of a lot of other people out there.

Cannot Make A Living As MT Anymore
Mar 09, 2015

So sad what this profession has come to. I am 57 years old, have been MT for 25+ years, always been a high producer with good QA scores. I made a really good living until January 2013 when Nuance acquired company, I chose not to accept their terms of employment. Went to another US based company (?) part time. Just did income tax and was shocked. Needless to say, I will not renew my contract again. It's just not worth the aggravation anymore. The incentive and production bonuses ...

Is Anyone Able To Make A Decent Living As A MT Anymore?
Nov 14, 2012

I quit my in-house MT job, a job that I had held for almost 20 years, a little over a year ago because of a new boss who drove me and about 10 other people to quit because she was so hard to work for.  I thought long and hard about it before I quit, but could not see myself putting up with her for the next 10-15 years until I could retire.  She was making some of us physically ill because of stress.  I believe we may have been "creatively downsized".  Since I q ...

How Are People Not Making A Living?
Jul 06, 2012

THIS IS NOT A MEAN OR DEGRADING MESSAGE.  I am genuinely curious as I have been with them for almost 9 years and have never had a problem netting (after taxes) anywhere from 13-17$/hour.  I only work 50-60 hours every 2 weeks and I am bringing home 550--800$. I don't see how some people are working 80 hours every 2 weeks and aren't bringing home at least 1000$.  ...

Is Anyone Really Making A Decent Living Doing Speech At 4 Cpl?
Jun 09, 2011

I am looking into to taking a second job to make extra money.  My main job pays by the hour as I work directly for a hospital and it is a combination of speech and straight transcription work.  Consequently, I'm thinking maybe taking a strictly speech job would be easier on my neck, shoulders, arms, and hands, but I don't want to be wasting my time.  If I'm not going to make any money doing it, why bother? So I would like to know if there are any MTs out there who ...

Cant Seem To Make A Living
Feb 22, 2010

I have worked as a radiology transcriptionist for over ten years .  My pay has been cut in half and jobs are hard to find. I take tests and no one calls back.  I usually only have their email anyway.    I am now learning acute care because it seems for last few years it has been the only game in town.  However, I cannot believe how hard it is and I am getting paid the same as radiology.  It's becoming impossible to afford to live on this income, but I ...

Can You Really Make A Living?
May 21, 2011

I just accepted a job at AllType and the majority of my account is VC.  I have not dropped my other position I had as IC and no VC.  I am wondering, as this is my first time ever doing VC, can you really make a living at this?  I know I will NEVER make a fortune at this job but an 800+ paycheck every 2 weeks would sure be desirable.  Thanks. ...

Can You Make A Living As An MT?
Oct 16, 2011

I am thinking about going to The Andrews School to become an MT. I have taken the pre enrollment exam and they said i passed with a score of 84%, which i think is pretty good for not knowing what im doing. But,  today i was surfing the web and seen a post from someone that was ranting about how the school is a scam and after they completed the course they got a job where they had to work 60-70 hours per week and only get paid 3 cents per line. So, i was wanting to know if there is any Andre ...

Can I Really Make A Living?
Oct 20, 2011

Experienced MTs please tell me, can a person actually make a living at this. I am a newbie, working from home for the last 4 months.   I am feeling very discouraged by my paychecks.  I am just barely making minimum wage after working a full time schedule.  I like the work, but if I can't support myself doing this what is the point?  I would love to hear from those of you who have been doing this long term.  Thanks. ...

Living In Fear
Dec 04, 2013

Just got e-mail stating I did NOT pass my audit.  i got 99.4%.  i have been with this company for over 15 years.  Lately, I stress out every day over this job.  I am sitting here waiting for a phone call from my TSM to discuss this.  I am quite worried.  Living paycheck to paycheck now.  Cannot afford to take another pay cut or lose my job.  If they do put you on 100% do you ever get taken off? I have slowed down and really tried to be more careful/cautio ...

Living Well Off Of Our Backs
Mar 13, 2014

How does it happen that office personnel get in-house raises and are making far more than any of us when it is the transcriptionists who bring in the actual money?  We are solely responsible for the lavish lifestyles of CEOs and the salaries of management while we ourselves make next to nothing.  I remember years ago the office personnel making little wisecracks at how much we made while some of them with "degrees" did not make nearly as much.  Well, I guess that has been fixed no ...

I Am So Tired Of Living Under The Threat Of This 99%
Mar 23, 2012

Either I am being targeted or I will agree I am on an account that perhaps requires regular audits, but I just cannot take it anymore.  The last two audits I barely failed and I now I am assuming I will be terminated.  We are encouraged to speed up editing and in the process we are most assuredly missing incorrect ASR dictation, etc.  I mean no offense to any MTs who work for this company, but I daresay across the board this company does not produce MTs who continuously maintain ...

Living In Fear Of Critical Error.
Jan 24, 2010

I've got this terror of critical errors.  I shudder every time I check my feedback, if I've left a marker (sometimes I've noticed they'll check the entire report, not just the marker.  Guess it depends on the MME).  What happens if you get a critical error?  Are you back on QA for awhile?  Do you get nasty e-mails?  Do you get canned?  40 lashes? ...

Supervisors Can Make Your Life A Living
Nov 19, 2012

I have known this for all the years that I have been in this business, but unfortunately I came face to face, so to speak, with this problem again recently.  I stated a point to my supervisor by e-mail, and very nicely, about some technical difficulties I was having, and no matter how I would explain it, she did not understand what I said.  Even the tech told her that it was not due to my computer, but the connection I had.  She said she would call me, and I said I would look ...

SoftScript, Living Up To Its Horrendous Reputation!
Mar 18, 2013

I can't say I wasn't warned about SS, not only in the archives but by an acquaintance who'd worked there for 2 years, leaving a year ago. I took a shot, hoping they had, or were in the process of turning over a new leaf. It turned out to be the worst employment experience in my 20 years 'on the force.' I have never posted here before, often wondering if the gripes here might be limited to a handful of disgruntled employees; they're not & I'm living proof. I ...

Is Anyone Able To Make A Decent Living At Landmark Doing VR?
May 21, 2014

Over the past few months, the account that I am on has gone from being at least half straight typing to almost all VR, with only a very small handful of dictators that are still on straight transcription.  I am having a really hard time making a living since this has happened and my paychecks keep getting smaller and smaller.  I am wondering if anyone else is in the same situation, or if it's just me.  My account is a pretty busy one, but most of these VR reports are a comple ...

Interview At Assisted Living Facility For MT

I live in a very rural community, 1-1/2 hours from any larger city.  When I moved here, I thought I could work from anywhere.  I have been looking for a job for 2 years, but there has been no need for someone with my MT experience, and age discrimination is definitely alive and well.  I have an interview set up for tomorrow at a local assisted living facility/nursing home for full-time MT. I certainly have no problem demonstrating my expertise and ability to perform thi ...

Not An MT Anymore!!

Working at .075 cpl for ScribeRight I made a whopping 12K in 2009. Wow - let's all run out and take MT classes to jump on that bandwagon.  Anyway, I quit my MTSO pimp and went to work for a well-known Italian restaurant chain in 2010. I work in the kitchen 6 hours a day for 5 days a week (Mon-Fri lunch shift with no nighttime or weekend shifts) and make about 15% more than I did as an MT. I am not an IC anymore but rather an employee, so I saved a bunch on my social ...
