Does VR get better if kept in-house? - Just wondering...

Have any of your hospitals purchased a Nuance VR product that they've used for their in-house transcriptionists? If so, does the VR quality get better and better since you have a limited number of MTs doing the editing?

It's not my hospital but one I know of that's starting with this new product, so I'm not sure of the exact product name. I've worked for a huge MTSO where the VR never, ever improved in the 9 months I used it; but with soooo many MTs making (or not making) the corrections with the MTSO, it got me wondering if keeping it in-house yields a better result.

I'm trying to decide if it's worth trying to get an in-house job with this hospital if they have another opening. If it's the same old frustrating story as we've known with an MTSO, I would have to think twice about applying.

Would love to hear any input if you've experienced this while remaining a hospital employee. TIA!

In-house Dictaphone Enterprise Speech System (DESS) - ExEditor/Word 2007 - dmj

I served as the Project Manager for implementation of Dictaphone Enterprise Speech System (DESS) at our hospital. I won't go into all the components involved but will summarize it to say we edit in ExEditor using Word 2007. The installation was completed a year ago and was an upgrade from using Dictaphone Word Client/Word 2003.

Our system has gotten better and better over time. However, there are a couple of key points to achieving this that should not be overlooked. First, before the new software was implemented all the MTs were educated on the importance of following a standard set of transcription guidelines for our site so the software could "learn" and present text in the preferred manner. This has to do with what is called Smart ReWrite. Having different MTs transcribe/edit the same thing differently will simply equate into the software having no clue as to what the preferred presentation for the draft text should be. You'll end up having some MTs who are constantly changing something to the way they transcribe it and other MTs leaving it just the way it is because that is how they do it. The software simply has no way of "knowing" what to do.

Second, it takes active participation of the software system administrator to configure the software for things such as how to format headings, how numbers are to be handled, number of spaces after a period, how to handle dangerous abbreviations, etc. There are well over 100 settings to configure. It's no small undertaking at the onset and should be well thought out in advance, but once it's set up it's only a matter of the system administrator fine tuning any specific items thereafter. It's the MTs who can identify what isn't showing up correctly and give that feedback to the system administrator. Ideally, the system administrator is an MT who gets in there and transcribes as well. In my case, I can identify right away things that needed to be tweaked because I see how it comes through to me.

I've seen how great the Dictaphone (Nuance) speech recognition software can work when managed properly. For those who have not experienced the same level of success, I believe it is because of the two primary items I outlined above.

There are many, many things that can be done by the administrator to make the software work like a well-oiled machine. Simply installing the software and not actively managing it will mean less than optimal results.

That's great info, dmj....thanks for the feedback. So, it sounds like the voice recognition DOES do better in a limited environment, like within one hospital's in-house MT department.

I guess the big MTSOs should realize that VR would do a much better job if they could get a handle on making the corrections more uniformly!
