In-house job not so secure - stressed

Posted: Aug 23, 2010

My job could be in jeopardy because we might be merging with another clinic, and there are no other local in-house MT openings. I've been working in a specialty clinic (in-house) the past 5-1/2 years. Even though I have 5 years of acute care/radiology experience and 1 year of multi-specialty clinic, and even though I took the M-TEC course and graduated with 98% about 3 years ago, it doesn't matter because I don't have recent acute care experience. Okay, I can understand that,  so I'm trying to figure out what to do to make myself more marketable as an MT. There are some courses I'm considering - if anyone has taken any of these, could you please give me your opinion on the quality? I already know the pricing. Thanks.

1. AHDI acute care module.

2.  Career Step CMT prep courses versus M-TEC CMT review versus TRSI CMT prep course.

3.  M-TEC Increasing Productivity Webinar

4.  M-TEC Grammar and Punctuation Webinar versus TRSI English Grammar Review - definitely quite a bit price difference, but it looks from the description like the M-TEC one is really thorough.

Basically I just need to get familar with acute care again and get my speed up which has always been an issue when working from home as I've tried that a few times. Plus my satellite connection doesn't help but that's all I can get for high-speed internet.

Thanks.

I can't be of much help to you on the course excpet to say Career Step was quality enough to get me a job right after graduation. With all of your experience, why don't try applying for some positions now before the axe drops on you.
I definitely relate to your problem and wish you good luck.

Thanks but I have applied and have had no responses. I notice most ads say "recent acute care experience", so that is probably why. I graduated from M-TEC about 3 years ago but decided to stay where I was at becaused it pays well.

don't let the ad's stop you. - sm

Not all employers are firm about everything they are looking for. Not to mention that recent to one may be a different number than recent to another. so if you are interested in a company, try to get an interview and put your resume in anyway. Good luck.

Never thought of that. I'll keep trying. Thanks.

I have done Oncology for the past 2+ years and recently got a FT employee position with a company doing that. They have asked/offered to train me in their GI and ER department now as well for when they need backup. That's also a pretty good way to expand your horizons.

I see that oncology transcriptionists are really, really needed. I almost got hired with one place before but at the last minute found out they required DSL/cable, and I have satellite and that's all I can get where I'm at. That's another issue. I also almost got hired by a company for just radiology transcription, which I love, but also found out they require DSL/cable. I think I would move if I could afford to just to have DSL/cable!

My story may encourage you.. - Searching

I was out of acute care for several years but was able to ease my way back into it by applying for an acute care job that included radiology, ER notes, and "easy stuff" as well, not just the basic four. IMO if you can get on with a hospital that hires remotely and has "one huge transcription pool" that all work types are drawn from that may be your answer. It would certainly save on money and time spent on those courses. JMO Wishing you the best.

Has anyone heard of Mx Secure?  I just tested with them.  I have 12 years experience in hospitals and internet companies.  They said I didn't pass the test, which was extremely easy, and I do mean easy.  They suggested I take courses with them.  Is this company a scam?  Why can't I find a real company to test with anymore? ...

I Think We May Be Secure The Need For Editors.
Jan 04, 2013

I'm back to editing after a few years away from it and can't believe how bad the software still is. The company I worked for 3 years ago used better software and the drafts were not that bad. Now I'm with a different company using not the best editing software. Not sure what the docs are using, but the VR really does a bad job, even with very good dictators. On words it doesn't understand it ignores them and then picks up when it understands it again. The errors it is makin ...

In-house Job
Oct 14, 2010

I applied for an in-house transcription job in August back at my old pre-MQ hospital.  They decided the work load was too light (they had lost Radiology) and we not going to fill it at that time.  Another position has been vacated and I got a call from a friend that they are definitely filling it this time.  There were only 2 qualified applicants in August.  I am hoping the other person found something great already.  I have my fingers crossed, am nervous, and need ...

Does VR Get Better If Kept In-house?
May 16, 2012

Have any of your hospitals purchased a Nuance VR product that they've used for their in-house transcriptionists?  If so, does the VR quality get better and better since you have a limited number of MTs doing the editing?   It's not my hospital but one I know of that's starting with this new product, so I'm not sure of the exact product name.  I've worked for a huge MTSO where the VR never, ever improved in the 9 months I used it; but with soooo many MTs m ...

In-house Clinic Pay
Nov 16, 2010

I have an interview with a local eye clinic (there are six surgeons).  Just wondering what kind of salary to expect to be offered or ask for (!), having been paid as a remote MT/VR Editor by production for many years and haven't a clue about salaries in clinics any more.  It is not as an IC but as member of their staff, permanent, full-time, 40 hours a week. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.   ...

Got An In-house Interview!
Jan 05, 2013

It's for third shift, which doesn't excite me, but from the second Nuance gave me a Christmas 25% pay cut I've been scouring jobs of all shapes and sizes. Imagine my surprise when I found an in-house job advertised looking for a CMT only. I've been through several mergers and it's been relatively painless until the latest ...

In-house Job Prospect, What To Expect?
Sep 01, 2011

I just set up an interview for an in-house job.  Problem is, I've only worked from home, so I'm really not sure what to expect.  It is for a rural hospital district.  My experience is with medium to large multispecialty clinic accounts.  The HM manager said it was transcription, including radiology, as well as acting as assistant to her, which makes me think it might be more clerk work than transcription. I'm wondering if there are any questions I should ask m ...
