I honestly do not know what is worse: The fact that - sm

Posted: Dec 23, 2011

my former employers lied about why I no longer work there and I will not get food stamps now because of that (two kids starving, too, not just me) or the fact that the other place has not even contacted them.  Flat out no one cares anymore.  Unless you have cheery pinch your cheek posts, no one cares.  No one cares you go very hungry:(  Sad world.  And my former employer admits she lied:(

Why does that matter? Don't understand. sm - CrispyCritterMT

In the state I live in the only thing that matters is proof of income or lack thereof. For a single person you can't make more than 1017 (I think something like that). I broke my wrist a few years ago and couldn't work as ordered by doctor. I had no income. I got food stamps. What does it matter what your employer says or doesn't say? There are also a lot of churches that run food pantries. Perhaps that would be an option.

I am wondering that myself. I have no clue since - sm

before I did not have to do this. I have asked, but I will not hear probably for a while. I will check into food pantries here. Thank you:)

FOOD PANTRY OR A CHURCH - CINDY

[ In Reply To ..]
Hi. Yes food pantries would be good, also try a few churches. My son's church gives out bags to the homeless, and I am sure if someone came up there and asked for food they would definitely give them some. You might want to try a few churches so you can get enough to survive till you get your next check. Good luck.

I have volunteered in a couple of cities at food programs run by the Catholic Church. And no, you do not have to be Catholic to receive benefits. Does your city have a CATHOLIC COMMUNITY SERVICES? If they do, they could be source of help. Our city also has this number, 211, and you can call it for information on such things. If there are Catholic churches around, you might try asking there. As I said, you do not have to be Catholic.

You can go to the Salvation Army today and they - MT2

will give you food today. Immediately. They will also direct you to other social services through the United Way to get more food, emergency money for utilities, and counseling because if you don't believe me the exhusband will find out the kids are starving and you don't want that to happen. Take it from one who knows. Salvation army today will help you immediately. Please do that and don't delay.

Voluntary quit will sometimes void food stamps... - i_am_mtheaded

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to work for the Texas Food Stamp office as a worker, and if a person came in as a voluntary quit, and they had a child over the age of 5, then we did not have to include them in the food stamp case. They would be ineligible until they became employed with over 30 hours a week. Food Stamps are federal, so the same rules should apply state to state. If she got fired, then that is different, or if it was a reasonable quit.... no work at all, illness, lack of childcare, harassment. If they had children under the age of five, they could quit and have no penalty. Been a long time, but those rules probably still apply.

I think they probably do still apply, but thing is - sm

I was let go and they are lying (why I did not get my unemployment) and saying I quit. Sick people to lie about such a thing so people go hungry and we could have been homeless.
Didnt you ask if you should quit? Confused again. - nm

But didn't you turn in your notice and they just let you go then? - Am I confusing you with another poster?
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm probably going to get flamed all over the place, but I'm confused.

Are you the same poster who turned in notice and was told you could leave immediately? I'm not sure that falls under being terminated; I'm also not sure but in most cases wouldn't you be owed severance pay for the time you were willing to put in but they chose not to keep you?

I'm very sympathetic to the situation you're in with hungry children, but there are free meals EVERYWHERE on Christmas day so you won't literally be starving. A bit strapped until you're up and running on your new job, yes, but in the MT business it's somewhat notorious to be let you when you were prepared to work an additional week or two.

Is there any chance your new employer will let you start early? You could always postpone your holiday dinner until you get your first check from the new employer and make a combination celebration of your new job AND holiday meal.

I'm a bit perplexed about the circumstances of your resignation/termination, so excuse me if I come off a bit jaded but just...well, I'm not following your rationale in not pursuing other avenues (food banks, pantries, etc) instead of just the food stamps. There are other ways to get some food. Not everyone has cash to hand out to "hardship" case strangers and the holidays are infamous for hardship scams.

I'd suggest hitting up the food banks, community food pantries, churches, Salvation Army, etc., if you're truly starving.

Not to be critical, but if you were just fired two or three days ago, I can't fathom how you're already "starving." I understand your being upset about not being able to have a lovely holiday meal, but hey, if you and your children have your health and you have a new job ready to start, even Top Ramen can be your holiday meal on the 25th...and, as I said upthread, when you have that first check from your new job, THEN have that big celebratory meal.

Also, check with a friend(s) and I've no doubt one of them would invite you and the kids over for a big holiday feast. People normally love having extra company on the holidays and if they know you won't be able to put on a big spread for yourself and your children, I'm sure you'll have more invitations than you can handle.

Different poster - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
This is the poster who said she was fired without notice, which only happens if you've been warned about a problem, such as quality issues, or if you abandon your job. I feel bad for her as well, but it's not her former employer who made the laws about food stamps.
Really? Employers can say and do what they want to do! BTDT!! - Sickofit
[ In Reply To ..]
Write-ups can be made up. Audits can be fudged. Employers can say and do whatever they want and it is your word against theirs. They are allowed to bully and harass legally and employees have no recourse. As long as you live in a state that has the law of AT-WILL employment, you are screwed!!!

My former employer literally made up things on write-ups that did not happen!! I confronted her about it, but it was my word against hers. I eventually went on sick leave due to severe nausea and vomiting due to the stress. Well, they refused to fill out paperwork for FMLA and short-term disability. I had to hire an attorney ($800) to get this done and as soon as upper management saw this, paperwork got done and my boss was fired; however her assistant was made my boss!!! Long story short, the afternoon beforee returning from FMLA, email harassment started and I told the old assistant/new boss what I thought and was terminated while on FMLA!!!

There ARE no rights for the employees against bullying, unfair treatment, or even being lied on! You better document even when you think things are going good cause they can change in a heartbeat!!
Yes that was a totally different poster that - sm

DSG screwed also. It was not a problem as I was told at the time they lost my account. They said my work was great! That is why I believed that about the lost account. DSG stinks for sure!!
Can you appeal the decision? - Old Pro
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know how the food stamp or your state unemployment program work, but I am wondering if there is some avenue of appeal? Surely there is a way for you to get on record with the fact that your former employer is not telling the truth. I am wondering if perhaps they have not been paying into UE as they should have or something. Anyway, I would be pushing for appeals. I sometimes give what I can to the Salvation Army and know that they help all kinds of people, no questions asked. Might they be a source of help? I am concerned for you.
Thank you so much! And to everyone else, too. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I am trying to appeal right now saying we are very hungry and how my former employer is lying. I appreciate everyone's advice and am looking into the Salvation Army right now and the food banks here in town. Maybe we will have something soon after all:)

A long time ago, we were denied and the worker referred us to a church that helped with human resources. After we went to the church, we got food stamps. The minister of the church apparently used his influence with human services. Also, you might be able to get WIC vouchers.

MT Role - Always Evolving (FACT - Brief Response)
Apr 14, 2011

The role of the MT is always evolving.  No doubt we are all trying to figure out a way to stay afloat.  One of those ways could be for the MT to go beyond just transcription into assisting with the clinical documentation (including the complicated ICD-10).  Some doctors believe that medical transcription is one of the least efficient parts of their medical practice.   Certainly, many MT's have moved beyond transcription into speech recognition Medical Editors ...

IT Has Basically Admitted A Key (and Dangerous) Fact
Mar 25, 2013

I informed them of an error regarding a medication output by ASR,something sometimes said, but was not dictated. I was told this was programmed into the software, and they could not (i.e. would not) correct that. I have accused the software (programmers) of putting in often-said output rather than what was actually dictated which they have previously denied. Guess someone slipped up by admitting that was done with this medication. ...

Can It Really Get Worse?
Feb 14, 2011

I was terminated for reasons I won't go into here--after 9+ years at my last employer.  Thing is--I was looking anyway and informed potential employers that the company just was "no longer a good fit."  What finally tipped the balance was an e-mail we got a few months ago stating that after an MT had sent a certain percentage of reports to editing for comprehension issues, for instance, they would be penalized 0.03 cpl for doing so!
