They do gossip. But I honestly don't remember any male coworkers being especially vicious when talking about someone in the workplace. I do recall a few crude jokes in the break room, but one stern look at them and they'd knock it off when the ladies were present.
All it takes is just one or two people to poison a workplace. But once you figure out who they are, it's always better to interact with them as little as possible, male or female.
