You are getting a lot of crap answers that really do not - address your question. If you

Look at your Emdat ribbon of functions, you will see the Word icon (more toward the right side). If you have Word, you can use that function to toggle over to Word, type in Word, and use all the programs/functions you may have connected to Word such as your shorthand expander, as well as other programs based in Word.

If you do not have Word, obviously you can use the Emdat as a stand alone program without the ability to use the Word function on your Emdat ribbon.

The problem with VDI/Nuance is they are not using "clean" programs...meaning they are using faulty VDI installation programs. As a result, even if you have Word, for many it is not functioning properly because, as we all know Nuance never does things efficiently or correctly.

You were supposed to be able to toggle back and forth between your Emdat program and Word at will, without losing any text and being able to use all your Word based programs/functions, but Nuance screwed that up for many. Because Nuance (I was told used pirated, jackboot programs), that function is not working properly for many, and in some cases, Nuance install of VDI wiped out their entire shorthand programs that were based in Word.

There is more to it with all the Nuance screw ups. I hope this helps you. Good luck to you!
