I have been transcribing 25 years. Have seen the salaries go down and down and down. I went back to school 3 years ago to (slowly) get my A.S. in HIM. Will be done at the end of July. However, the job outlook is very bleak. They want me to chart analyst or such first. Really? At $12 an hour? I can't live on that. I want to code, but everybody requires years and years of experience. I'm already frustrated and I'm not even finished with school. AHIMA has a racket going, in my opinion. To take the RHIT you MUST have completed an AHIMA training program somewhere, of which most of the textbooks (which are ridiculously expensive) are published by AHIMA. It's utterly frustrating.
