Posted: Sep 28, 2010

Hi,

I am interested in taking a MT online course and would like some recommendations on some online schools.  I don't want to make the wrong decision and waste my money. Can anyone please  telll about a few schools so I can make my decision?

Thanks Smile

I don't know why now one answered your post unless its because this field sucks right now and you are going to be wasting a lot of money for nothing. I would go into medical billing if I had to do it right now. You would probably make more and wouldn't have to type your fingers to the bone to make the bare minimum. Don't be fooled by those adds that say you can make $40,000-60,000 a year unless your ready to sit there all day long typing. If that was the case there wouldn't be so many people on these boards complaining about everything under the sun from no work being available to not getting paid to getting such low pay that they can't pay their bills. The only reason I am here is I have been doing it since 1984 and don't have any other options available right now. This field is so full of transcriptionists that every job add that is on here gets about 100 resumes for each posting. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I wish I had better things to say about medical transcription at this point. Oh yeah don't forget about the India factor, jobs getting shipped over there taking them away from American transcriptionist or voice recognition.

Hi Liz, I cannot really answer your question either but (sm) - SillyMT

before deciding on this profession I would read this board (New MTs) carefully. There is loads of information on here about schools, ability to find a job once you graduate, the requirement of experience required by companies before hiring you, etc., and this information could help you tremendously.

I love being a MT, I work for a good company but my pay has dropped drastically over the last several years, just like most in this profession now. As the other poster stated, do not believe the ads stating that you can make $40,000-$60,000 a year. Again, do your research on this board and if you have any questions just ask. I wish you the best of luck!!

Salaries dropping and jobs being cut everywhere but... - we all have to work anyway

As people used to say, "Things are rough all over." They really are. We all, or most of us anyway, have to work. There are no good job options anymore. I just saw something written by a world banking leader who said the global economy is going to get worse until there are jobs. Personally, I don't see that happening. I think we'll have to check out our options and take the best one open to us, and get on with it. Nobody ever promised us huge salaries for the rest of our lives. We just assumed that would happened. It didn't.

Personally, if I had it all to do over again... - MayJ

I would have done what I wanted to do in the first place. Medical billing and coding. Looking in the papers browsing for jobs, I notice there are quite a few positions opened for medical coding and billing. None for medical transcription. Now, over 2 years later, here I sit with no job, no income, and up to my eyeballs in debt.

When inquiring about going back to school, I let a College recruiter talk me into transcription, telling me that coding and billing was going to be phased out, and that the job would be gradually merged in with transcription. Boy do I feel like an idiot for falling for that one.

Lesson learned. All I can do now is make the best of it.

It's never too late. What is to stop you from going into coding now? I know a woman who is going back for her Ph.D. and she is 85 years old!

I am researching MT schools, and would like input from current MT's on which schools they suggest, taking all factors into consideration; price, course outline, payment program, length of program, etc. I am also considering billing and coding. Has Anyone Ever Gone Through Allied School For Coding? Other School Recommendations?

I was wondering if anyone has ever gone through Allied School in California for billing & coding.  If so, how was your experience?  Were you able to find work in coding after finishing the course and getting your certification?  I have been a medical transcriptionist for the past 10-11 years and am now looking at getting into coding.  My best friend and I are going to take a course together.   If you wouldn't recommend Allied as a school, who would you reco ...

Coding School - Considering Going To A School
Sep 22, 2011

I am an MT who is considering going to school for coding.  I am thinking about taking the course through Andrews and will probably start next year because I will have to save up some of the money.  I am wondering if you think coding may eventually go the way of medical transcription and be outsourced to India.  I do not think it will so I just wanted to get the opinions of other coders.  I realize it will be a hard course but I think it will be worth the effort.  Any thoughts would be appre ...

Why I Would NOT Recommend ATSI
Feb 19, 2010

Hello all! I am new to this forum and would just like to share my thoughts with you as I have read through some of your postings about different MT companies out there, like "Should I work here?" So, as nicely as I can say it, in a matter of my opinion:  My Top Ten Reasons why I would NOT recommend ATSI: 1. The pay. Straight CPL no matter if it's days, nights, weekends, holidays. 2. No raises, incentives, or bonuses. 3. NOT employee status...EVER...even after 90 days, you will ...
