2 jobs at once 2 employers - key

Posted: Oct 15, 2009

I have been an MT for about 4 years now.  I have been working with one employer doing speech editing transcribing 3200 lines per 8-hour shift.  However, I just received a 2nd job from a different employer working part-time and they pay more.  My question is one employer needs my computer to have Word 2003 on it for their program to work and the other employer needs my computer to have Word 2007.  How can I do both jobs at the same time.  Has anyone done this before and if so what do you suggest.  Someone said that I could work on 2 computers and use 1 monitor, 1 mouse and 1 keyboard and just switch between the 2 computers.  Has anyone heard of this?  Would appreciate any information I could get.  Would love to do both jobs, 1 part time and 1 full-time.

I found this

suggesting dual drives - one external. I don't really know any other way to do it.

KVM switch. - CrankyBeach

That's what you need if you want to run 2 computers with the same keyboard, mouse and monitor. K-V-M stands for keyboard-video-mouse. You can either push a button on the switch itself to change computers, or hit the scroll lock key twice in rapid succession.

I've had such a setup for the last year, and it works fine.

Thanks a lot - keyshia

Thanks a lot. After I read your reply, I talked to the tech guys where I bought my computer from and that is what they suggested. I will be going to buy it next week.

you'll love the KVM switch sm - flybye

i've used one for YEARS...never had a problem...i call it "the octopus under my desk"

i would suggest you buy one with plugs that are difficult to disconnect (or that lock)... sweeping, vacuuming, or the occasional whack with your foot or pedal impact can dislodge the cables from the KVM...

and get one with a power cord long enough to be at least halfway between both your computers

congrats on having your eggs in 2 baskets! =)

=)
Thanks for the info - tiffany

I never knew there was such a thing. Can you tell me the name of your KVM switch? I checked online and there are many.

mine's a Belkin...years of use...never fails...knock on wood. =) nm - flybye

2 jobs at once - MTINSA

It is possible to have both programs on one computer. It might take up a lot of your hard drive, but is less expensive than buying another CPU. The assumption with that is that each company's platform will default to the correct Word version (something to mention to IT when they set it up). And yes, it is possible to use 2 CPUs with just 1 monitor, mouse, keyboard. You need a KVM switch which will allow you to switch between CPUs.

I've always heard that 2 different versions of Word will fight with each other. - CrankyBeach

I've never actually tried to run 2 versions myself, because it is not recommended.

Another possible solution is a dual-boot configuration, which in effect will give you 2 different computers on 1 machine. You might want to ask the tech guys about that possibility as well.

Of course, if you already have 2 computers up and running (your own and the company computer, perhaps?) all you need is that KVM switch.

Key,

I would like to suggest something that has worked for me in the past. I don't know if this would be appropriate for your situation, but if you already have Word 2007 on your computer, you can save your documents in a format that other people can open if they have an older version of Word. When you save a document, you have a list of options. In your situation, you would use either Word 97-2003 (*.doc) or Rich Text Format (*.rtf). I would ask the employer who requires Word 2003 if that would work for them or if they actually need you to have Word 2003 on your computer. I hope this is helpful. Good luck.

Where Have All The Employers Gone?
Jan 21, 2011

Even though I just let my AHDI membership expire, I was still due one more issue of their journal, Plexus, which I received today. In previous issues, I always scanned the "Employers Guide" pages in the back of the journal, and there were many  employers listed - at least two pages' worth. This newest issue, however, lists only seven. Perhaps the rest went overseas? ...

Rude Employers

Are the rest of you as disgusted as I am with not hearing back after sending an application?  Are all these ads for work just made up to look like there are jobs when in reality the ads are fakes?  I hear from so many other MTs/editors that they apply for jobs but never hear back, even after receiving permisson to do testing.  Maybe we should all stop applying and let them sit and spin! ...

Employers' Platforms
May 14, 2011

Has anyone here turned down a job with an MTSO because their platform is crappy? My employer's platform is TERRIBLE!!  You have go through 15 mouse commands (no hot keys!) to perform the simplest function such as signing off a job.  I have never seen more inefficient software in my life!!  Of course, since they own it now they claim it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.... Would love to hear your platform stories!! ...

Are The Remaining In-house Employers Discriminating
Jul 22, 2011

at home for MTSOs?  Some ads seem to want X-number of years of RECENT on-site MT experience.  Others don't say that, but with so many failed job applications this past year, even for areas that I've specialized in for 20 years, I'm getting no interest, and often no replies at all.  In addition to having more than 20 years' experience, do you think these employers have a problem with work-at-home MTs?  Like maybe they see us as undisciplined, poorly trained ...

Getting Response Back From Prospective Employers

Just Another Vent About Jobs, No Jobs, Requirement Of Jobs, Etc.

It is insulting to all of us with the way that MT pay has gone down the drain, it is frustrating and aggravating to look for a "decent" job these days, trying to work out which companies will treat you fairly, which ones lie about their platforms, work, etc., and not only do these companies not want to pay us what we are worth but now I see that MANY companies are requiring the MT to have or "be willing" to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of equipment.  If an employer can PROMISE IN ...

MT Week "gifts" From Our Employers

Will We All Be Out Of Jobs?

Once And For All - There Are No Jobs!
