Best MT Training Program? Thought it was M-TEC! - Becker

Posted: Jan 06, 2010

I'm researching MT Training Programs & thought M-TEC was supposed to be the best.  However, just noticed on this Board, they've been bought out & program shortened, etc.?

Now I'm really confused as to which is the best school for training & assistance with getting hired afterwards.

Any recommendations?

thx.

training - how about

Are you sure you want to do this after you read the posts here that this is not a lucrative field to get into anymore?

If you insist on doing this, CareerStep is one that is supposed to guide you in finding work, but not sure if they can really do that or not.

I went to M-Tec as I mentioned yesterday, and I do NOT recommend it. Their webpage says companies waive the 2 years' experience requirement, but that's not true. They also don't actually help you find a job, they just provide an old list of employers you can contact, but good luck getting replies from those employers.

I've seen people on the Career Step boards say they can't find a job, and they're also saying that CS didn't really help them find placement. You might want to check into that as well. (I don't know anything about Andrews, but if it's run by Linda Andrews, she seems pretty active on forums in trying to find things for her students.)

I encourage you to find another field. Seriously.

Still looking, still testing, only about 5% of the places I contact reply back.

Why don't you write to the schools you are interested in - and ask for recommendations from past students?

Things change - LK

M-TEC was sold to a new owner, Webmedx. Because is under new ownership and the school's founders are both gone, changes are happening. I have heard that the cost of the program went up astronomically and the length of the program was cut. I would be very suspicious of these changes, although I can't speak for the ongoing quality of the program. But why pay the new extremely high cost when you can attend an excellent school like Andrews? I would suggest you look into Career Step and Andrews, which both still have good reputations. There may be other good schools out there, but I'm not personally familiar with any others that have an overall good reputation. There are many horrible schools out there that will just take your money. Be careful.

I can comment on the things that have changed since I am in the 18 month program before it was cut and still attending and can see the new curriculum.

1. Some of the questions after reading medical material has been made optional. (These in my opinion was really unnecessary anyway. They are case studies where you are suppose to act like the Dr. and decide what the diagnosis is and there isn't really a right answer to them.) No transcription hours have been cut from the program.

2. They changed their expectations of the students. Before they expected you to attend around 20 hours a week now they expect you to dedicate 35-40 hours a week to finish in time.

3. It was my understanding that the shortened program was for them to apply for a type of accreditation that will allow students to apply for grants and student aid.

4. Teachers are now expected to respond more quickly to their students than previously.

That's all fine, but . . - LK

I don't have any problem with some of the reading content being shortened,as long as the transcription hours haven't been cut. I'm a graduate of the former M-TEC program and felt that some of the content was probably not necessary. The main concern I have is that they increased the tuition VERY significantly. Since when do you CUT a program and then raise the price so much? Why would you pay that much when you can attend a school like Andrews, which is top-notch, for much less money? And not everyone can give up their "day job" to devote 40 hours a week to a transcription program to finish in time. If you don't finish in time, you just have to pay more money. My guess is that many students will be forced to do this. The "new" M-TEC is looking very, very expensive.

Regarding your point #4, I never had any problem with my M-TEC instructors responding promptly to me under the old program. They usually got back to me the same day. How more prompt than that can you get?

Anytime quality is cut (as in length of program) and costs increase, I look for one motivating factor: Greed.

If I would of signed up after the changes I personally would of chosen Andrews instead of MTEC.

My teacher doesn't respond to me within a day. I am on day 3 right now waiting for a test to be graded. Before this it took her 2 weeks to grade a test before.
You will still benefit from the name - LK

I'm assuming you paid the old price, and you're still getting the advantage of the M-TEC name. M-TEC has a very good reputation among MTSOs, and it still remains to be seen what will happen down the road with the quality of the grads it produces. M-TEC is still viewed as putting out high-quality graduates, though. Good luck with your studies!

I agree with what you say. I have found Andrews grads to have a much better knowledge base than Career Step grads. But Career Steps is adequate. I agree with you, with the changes and increased costs at M-TEC, why spend your money there? An education is an investment, and if I were to recommend one, I would say it would be Andrews, just by the quality of people I have seen and by the ease with which the grads get jobs. It's tough enough in this economy; you want a first class education.

Which is best? - MTSO

I have been responsible for the hiring of many MTs. I have never been affiliated with any school, although I have researched several of them, as I have been involved in the teaching of transcription. My opinion, for what it is worth, is that Andrews is far and away the best school. M-TEC has gone through some recent changes with which I am not entirely comfortable, though it may still be a good school. I would rank Career Step a distant third to the first two. Don't even think about the matchbook schools. Others may feel differently. That is my take on it. Good luck to you.

With the changes at M-Tec, it is always possible that a year from now their reputation will no longer be what it was. I think to say that Career Step is adequate is more than fair, but considering the competetive nature of finding that first job, I would go for more than adequate. I never considered any school other than Andrews myself. My plan was to attend Andrews or find another line of study. It has served me well. I had no problems finding a job.

I also had no problem finding a job nm - CareerStepGradandWorking

what about TRSi? - diana

What about TRSi training program? Do you, or anyone, have any insights on TRSi? The program has been approved since 2007 and they appear to have alot of affiliations with AHDI and MTIA (which would make them quite credible?).
thanks,

Wmx - Another Thought On This
Sep 02, 2010

I think this was a very large account and they could have divided the MTs who had this as their primary and put them on various other accounts.  Yes, this would have overstaffed those accounts and more MTs would be getting NJA as we all scrambled for what work there was.  Also, this way WMX would not be putting out unemployement for anyone and soon most of us would not have benefits because we couldn't keep our line counts up with NJA all the time.  All in all, looks like the ...

I just realized that no one cares about the quality of medical records anymore.  I have had to go to VR and I am now making anywhere between 4 and 12 dollars/hour.  I guess people care more about the quality of their hamburgers than they do peoples' healthcare. I have started to just send them through.  I don't even really listen to the work.  I look at it and change any major spelling errors, but other than that, what the VR says is what they get.  The fu ...
