Wmx - another thought on this - nn

Posted: Sep 02, 2010

I think this was a very large account and they could have divided the MTs who had this as their primary and put them on various other accounts.  Yes, this would have overstaffed those accounts and more MTs would be getting NJA as we all scrambled for what work there was.  Also, this way WMX would not be putting out unemployement for anyone and soon most of us would not have benefits because we couldn't keep our line counts up with NJA all the time.  All in all, looks like they could save bigger bucks that way.

I feel very sorry for those who are out of a job right now, but also have to admit it would have hurt a larger number of people had they done it another way.

I still feel if they thought we were such remarkable people, they OWED it to the MTs who were impacted to have some sort of warning.  If they find good jobs between now and any recall of employees, WMX may be told to @%#%^& off.

I wish the best for all those involved and keeping fingers crossed this is not a company on a downhill spiral which will ultimately get us all.

Your 3rd paragraph describes what everyone is upset about. - sm

I remember back in the 1970s when there were a lot of layoffs, and I had gone through it myself a few times. Yet, we were given plenty of warning to try to buffer it the best way we could. I don't remember EVER being treated like some of these Wmx MTs were. Yes, companies have to look out for the survival of the companies. Therefore, laying people off is the only viable solution. However, these people that they lay off have families and also must provide for the survival of human lives!

Instead of telling the MTs what was going on so they could prepare themselves, they worked them like dogs to clean up what was left on that account. They were concerned only with their TAT and the fines that would be incurred if TAT was lost.

I was just reading an article about CEOs cashing in on huge bonuses for saving their companies money by laying off workers right before I came here and read about Wmx. I realize that Wmx is not even close to the size of some of the companies with filthy rich CEOs, but my point is the whole principal behind the "survival" of a company in this country and what some will do to protect a nonliving entity. It feels like the corporate climate is going way past greed and morphing into something much more evil.

I agree the callous risk management-driven manner - Anon.

[ In Reply To ..]
of notice is what cannot be defended here. It doesn't matter that this has become standard procedure throughout much of the world. Layoffs can be done courteously and thus should be.

Hopefully, outrage expressed in forums like this one throughout many industries will persuade management to rethink how this should be handled.

Confirming, Webmedx normally does spread temporarily "extra" people among other accounts, a reason for occasional low work availability we tend to accept pretty well, knowing it could be any of us. Perhaps this time there just wasn't enough room left. I know my accounts have already been bottoming out a bit too often for a few weeks now.

SM, I also agree with you that overall the "corporate climate" has morphed into outright evil over the past 30 years with a return to shockingly laissez-faire practices. Not too long ago I read results of a couple of studies of the minds of people in leadership positions, and one thing that struck me both times was how often people who get rich and powerful from inflicting tremendous damage on their companies, industry, people, and country have convinced themselves that they are good people just doing what is right. (Of course, there are also the clear-eyed others who do not lie to themselves...)

How about a letter-writing campaign to all their - clients, urging them to boycott WMX?

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I already know they won't. But for each client to receive hundreds of letter from former employees of the company they outsource their work to, can't go unnoticed. Maybe they'll pull out, come contract-renegotiation time.

Ya never know. Can't hurt to try.

What ever happened to seniority? - traditional layoffs go different

[ In Reply To ..]
Any other industry I've worked in, layoffs go by senority. There is respect for longevity and company loyalty. The last in is the first out the door. That keeps it "fair".

What was fair about this? What is fair about a community page that "welcomes" tons of scrolling newbies whose jobs are still there today? What is fair about their pretense of "congratulating" employees who reached "milestones" (i.e. 3, 5, 7 years with the company) yet kicking them to the curb if their primary is randomly lost?

BTW, I reached my 3 year "milestone" this year and never received any kind of service award. Just anohter feel-good corporate lie.

NOT TRUE!!! Only UNIONS are mandated to go by seniority - nooooooo

[ In Reply To ..]
Most companies DO let go of their oldest/long-term employees as their benefits and pays are usually a lot less than a newer employee. The ONLY way a company has to go by seniority is if it is under a union contract.

Yeah, ethics aren't mandated without a union - integrity my foot!

[ In Reply To ..]
I was laid off by a non-union shop during the mini-recession in the early 80's. No, they didn't HAVE to go by seniority - but they did. Because business ethics had not gone straight to hades YET. One would think a company that demands integrity from its employees would have it little itself.
Ethics: A. Set of principles of right conduct. - Integrity: Adherence to ethical code.
[ In Reply To ..]
Business ethics: Behavior that a business adheres to in its daily dealings with the world. (Terminology 101 for flamethrowers.)

Yep, this poster is correct - Blessing in Disguise for Employers

[ In Reply To ..]
I've worked places where the employer was able to layoff lesser dedicated long-term employees and keep more recent enthusiastic employees.

I've worked places where some of the longer-term employees were the worst of the department, so I would imagine many companies look on layoffs as a way to clean house, so to speak. NOT saying this is the case at WMX at ALL, just pointing out that only with a union is seniority the deciding factor while in non-union situations, employers are afforded the opportunity to unload whatever "dead weight" they perceive to have.

My sympathies to all who were laid off at WMX and, again, my post has NOTHING to do with their situation; only the situation of union/non-union layoffs.

Inaccurate - Layoffs with UNION are done by seniority - Survived Lots of Them

[ In Reply To ..]
Only if a union is involved are layoffs done by seniority. I've been a newer employee who was spared during a few layoffs because of my demonstrated proficiency, and I'm not talking about MT work; I'm talking about administrative positions I held before I became an MT, as well as at a resort by which I was employed that had massive layoffs post 9/11. My cousin had 12 years of service, I had but 1 year. In the grand scheme of things, I was more valuable to the company than she was and thus she was let go while I was kept on.

Only if a union is involved (which some departments at the resort were unionized and their layoffs were done by seniority) does seniority count in the final decisions. In fact, with a union, I believe it's the primary factor taken into consideration.

Seniority has nothing to do with it - emotions still talking

[ In Reply To ..]
My ex used to be in charge of lay-offs for his department in a sizeable defense firm. He would agonize for weeks on how to choose who to lay off. It had nothing to do with seniority. Seniority hasn't really played a role in the American workforce in decades.

Sounds like (bad) luck of the draw. You were on an account they lost. Trying to ascribe sinister overtones to it all isn't helpful.

Remember in losing accounts and MTs, they lost revenue. I'm not looking for sympathy for them, just saying it's pure business. They're in business to make a profit, not be concerned with whether or not you can buy food. Welcome to American capitalism at its finest.

Employer of the Year?? - WebQA

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't they actually have to have employees to be employer of the year? What a crappy company. How horrible to have laid us all off via email with no notice whatsoever. Classy. I applied for unemployment, food stamps, and social security disability yesterday, as well as many jobs. Trying to stay on the ball on this. I did QA hourly so to go back to transcription would be a hardship for me and my 2 young girls. They are 3 and 6. My older one starts 1st grade on Tuesday and I'm a WRECK. Today is picture day and open house and I don't know how I'm going to make it through. I feel like i need Xanax or some liquor to make it through this mess! ARRRRRRGHHHHHHH!

I'm just wondering what is with companies not calling you after you have passed a test and said they will? I don't understand it. Yes,  I realize that they may have several people, but is it too much to ask for a phone call to do an interview or something? I am looking for a job and when I do pass tests and get excited that I actually did and no one contacts me like they said they would, it really bothers me. ...

I Thought I Was The Only One
May 13, 2011

I just realized that no one cares about the quality of medical records anymore.  I have had to go to VR and I am now making anywhere between 4 and 12 dollars/hour.  I guess people care more about the quality of their hamburgers than they do peoples' healthcare. I have started to just send them through.  I don't even really listen to the work.  I look at it and change any major spelling errors, but other than that, what the VR says is what they get.  The fu ...

Could it be that the MModal and Nuance are buying all of these smaller, better MTSOs because they want to limit our employment options?  If MModal (the Q) and Nuance are the monopolizing companies, and an MT who works for them just had all she/he could take, where could she/he go?   Just a thought....   ...

What I JUST got, though, is the fact that a good general transcriptionist (one who can think and knows how to research unfamiliar ...

First, VR was going to replace us.  When that didn't work, now we -- American MTs -- are fine-tuning VR so the Indian MTs can replace us.  And to make sure this happens, MTSOs are paying us unfair, unlivable wages to force us out, thus forcing clients to accept what they get from the Indian MTs because there won't be enough qualified American MTs left.
