I just had a thought!!! - GR8MT

Posted: Nov 15, 2012

What if we asked for stocks in the company as a benefit?  I know Wal-Mart does this for their employees, because my SIL, who has worked for Wal-Mart for a long time, drew from her stock and traveled a distance and paid for a  birthday party for her 3-year-old grandson and went shopping at our local mall and bought herself a wonderful new set of pots and pans (that new kind that is green and made out of ceramic) and just lived it up more than she could have done otherwise.  Since the company is going so well, maybe we all could share in it just a little bit.

What makes you think management wants to share anything with us. Heck, - we let them get by with paying SM

[ In Reply To ..]
pennies per line. Why would they ever think they should give us stock. They dont want to share. They dont play nice, either.

They dont want to share anything. Heck, they barely pay us. - nm

Stock - GR8MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Well, my thought was that Wal-Mart is not known for having the greatest of benefits and yet they do this for their employees, so maybe our company could just give us each a token amount of stock. It would greatly improve morale around here.

define "our" company and whose morale. you are speaking to those - from about 500 diff companies here NM

Well, the one that just sent out an email (called a V mail) bragging how it is one of the "top performing technology companies in the U.S. and Canada." Not to mention any names.
seeing as how I don't work with you, I have no email and no idea - where you are going with this. NM

.

And some companies give pd maternity leave, chip in for child - care costs, pay for continuing education. SM

[ In Reply To ..]
But no MTSO will do that. Pure and simple. They do not want to share the wealth. They dont care about morale. If you are not happy, leave. They can hire someone else. And the cost of hiring a newbie obviously is not more than the cost of distributing free stock or they wouldnt do it. Bottom line is money. Not MORAL.

Bottom line is MONEY in management pockets. Our moral is - not an area a concern for them. nm

You are free to purchase the stock - of any

publicly traded company at any time you want. There is nothing stopping you from owning stock in the company you work for if you want to. Just go buy some.

Stock - GR8MT

[ In Reply To ..]
That is not the point. They did give us better health care benefits, so I was just thinking of something else we might appreciate, that's all.

Exactly - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I understand your point. In fact, many of the best performing companies such as Apple, Google, Wal-Mart (as you mentioned), etc. give company stock or stock options. It is how they attract and retain the best employees.

And the point I was making - was

[ In Reply To ..]
that if you think stock in the company is worth owning, you can buy it yourself. You don't have to wait for the company to give it to you (which would more likely be in the form of the option to purchase the stock at a certain price, which you would then have to exercise by purchasing the stock).
But ... - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes. I realize that. BUT if the stock is given you as a type of bonus it's free. If it's a stock option, then you buy the stock if it has risen above the exercise price. So you either get the stock for free or at a reduced price rather than paying market value which is what you are saying we should do. It is two different things entirely.
I understood your point perfectly - however
[ In Reply To ..]
the point I seem to be unable to make clear is that if your goal is to own stock in the company, you can purchase it yourself.

And nothing is "free." There are tax consequences, even when the stock is "free."

And, since your friends seem to be doing so well with their Walmart stock, you could have the same experience by purchasing your own Walmart stock. People who don't work for Walmart own Walmart stock, too.
Give it up. The 2 big ones arent gonna give you anything for free. - Get used to it or go work for Walmart. nm

I think that's a really good idea, gr8mt - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I think it would be smart of these companies to put a plan like this in place. I wonder if you could suggest it! It's a good idea. (But they do all sound like stinkers, and somehow I doubt they'd do it!)

Sure, she could suggest it. No, it would not be implemented. We are already - working without it. Why would they give SM

[ In Reply To ..]
us stock options when we are already doing what they want, working for pennies.

On a side note...... - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Personally I would not be "investing" any of my hard earned monies into stocks of any kind, and I don't care who is offering them and at one price. My intention is not to bring religion into this at all and by any means, but prophecy from the Big Book itself states that during the "end times" the stock market will fail, much like it did in 1929 and many people who counted on that money will lose everything because of it. We have already seen indications of this in just the past year. Things are not going well for this economy at all, whether it be for religious reasons or not. Even present stock "investors" are moving their money into more stable structures like CDs and IRAs. Why take the chance of losing everything you have hoping to become a 51% of a large company? Is it worth it?? Not to me, it would not be. I have a hard enough time keeping my money in my own pocket, much less wanting to lose it all to some scam wall street thing. According to the prophysies, banks are also doomed to failure in the end times. Many of these big companies have already had to be "bailed out" by our govt to keep solvent...why would you want to "invest" anything in those types of things? Not me. Right now my mattress is looking a whole lot better than some of these organizations. But this is just speculation and "information sharing" on my part and I am not looking for a debate on any of it. These are my opinions only.

I believe that when companies start to sell shares on - Wall St., thats when they lose any - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
sense of morality or fairness they may have had in the past. Once there are stockholders involved, it's all about the money, and the employees and clients become an afterthought. Look at the mess Facebook has become since it went public.

you got that right - they work for the stockholders

The COO at MModal made a point of saying she believes in doing the right thing. She needs to take that out of her resume.

Wmx - Another Thought On This
Sep 02, 2010

I think this was a very large account and they could have divided the MTs who had this as their primary and put them on various other accounts.  Yes, this would have overstaffed those accounts and more MTs would be getting NJA as we all scrambled for what work there was.  Also, this way WMX would not be putting out unemployement for anyone and soon most of us would not have benefits because we couldn't keep our line counts up with NJA all the time.  All in all, looks like the ...

I'm just wondering what is with companies not calling you after you have passed a test and said they will? I don't understand it. Yes,  I realize that they may have several people, but is it too much to ask for a phone call to do an interview or something? I am looking for a job and when I do pass tests and get excited that I actually did and no one contacts me like they said they would, it really bothers me. ...

I Thought I Was The Only One
May 13, 2011

I just realized that no one cares about the quality of medical records anymore.  I have had to go to VR and I am now making anywhere between 4 and 12 dollars/hour.  I guess people care more about the quality of their hamburgers than they do peoples' healthcare. I have started to just send them through.  I don't even really listen to the work.  I look at it and change any major spelling errors, but other than that, what the VR says is what they get.  The fu ...

Could it be that the MModal and Nuance are buying all of these smaller, better MTSOs because they want to limit our employment options?  If MModal (the Q) and Nuance are the monopolizing companies, and an MT who works for them just had all she/he could take, where could she/he go?   Just a thought....   ...

Have you all ever thought of letting your own doctor/s know that you will no longer have a physician who sends his or her work to a company to be done overseas and that you will now demand that your medical records be done in the US or you will seek medical attention elsewhere?  Maybe start making a lot of noise on the doctor/hospital level? I am making stupid, idiotic mistakes that I never made before. Yes I know I am older than when I started this mess of a job. As my husband pointed out (he sees how stressed I get) our local grocery store employs people with mental and physical disabiltiies as grocery baggers and they get paid more than I do with less hassle, better benefits and more time off.  Not saying everyone should work in a grocery store but it is something to think about when you are getting grief for maybe being 1 point off on a BP supposedly putting a patient's life at risk or getting a major error for not including "include" w ...

what will happen when the doctors start using templates and no longer have us to edit their reports.  at some point they still have to dictate text, right.  or will they be using templates for everything and just pulling information from the EHR. just curious how that is going to be with doctors completely being left on their own and accountable for their own records... for example, take the worst dictator you have and try to imagine them seeing their reports without any of the editin ...

Wanna Know Who Thought Up VBC?
Feb 16, 2010

Something smacks of anti-trust here. Excerpt: It’s been a little more than two years since the AHIMA and the Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA) recommended the visual black character (VBC) method be used as the standard unit of measure for medical transcription. Based on research from the Joint Task Force on Standards Development, the announcement came in the form of a white paper that made quite a splash. Defining a VBC as a “character that can be seen with the nake ...

CBAY could get rid of a lot of board of directors.  Does CBAY have any idea how much money it could save them?  In fact, why we are at it, get rid of the United States board of directors and bring in their own India board of directors.  They could probably pay their suits half or even less than it would cost for United States board of directors.  Plus!  Would not have to pay incentives, benefits, bonuses, gas for their cars, credit expenses for lunches and golfing, e ...

Random Thought
Jun 29, 2012

I do both medical and general transcription. I know there is much discussion about MTs standing a bit above GTs in the Invisible Hierarchy of Transcription because of the responsibility involved and amount of training required. I get that. I also know that general transcription is hard work and requires a lot of knowledge about a lot of things in order to do it well. What I JUST got, though, is the fact that a good general transcriptionist (one who can think and knows how to research unfamiliar ...

Scary Thought...
Oct 03, 2012

First, VR was going to replace us.  When that didn't work, now we -- American MTs -- are fine-tuning VR so the Indian MTs can replace us.  And to make sure this happens, MTSOs are paying us unfair, unlivable wages to force us out, thus forcing clients to accept what they get from the Indian MTs because there won't be enough qualified American MTs left. Had A Thought Today

As I was working this afternoon I got to thinking about somethings...first and foremost is the state of our profession.  We are are paid mere pennies to transform physician "gobbeldygook" into a written document.  We are expected to adhere to strict schedules, make NO mistakes! And produce high volume.  Our benefits are a joke when we can afford them.  If there is no work, we do not get paid yet are reqired to hang around waiting for it for free.  Most of us have not had ...
