My company is dissolving. My option is to work for Medquist... - Amber

Posted: Nov 10, 2009

I have worked for the same company for the last 5 years but found out today that we are losing our biggest client to MedQuist so they are dissolving the transcription department at my company. They are offering an option to work for MedQuist.  I am skeptical as I have read so many bad things about the company; but, I'm curious if there are genuinely happy people also that work for MedQuist.  I only have a week to make a decision and I'm hoping to make an informed one.  Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, well, not sure how much help we can be. You have read what's here. Do keep in mind that happy campers don't generally post on this board, though. There may very well be a few happy people. Happy campers come out of the woodwork if you're browsing.

MQ is not the only game in town. DO keep in mind that MQ loses clients because of quality issues.

It all depends on certain factors. I don't know what you make per line now and whether or not you do ASR jobs. I can tell you that ASR only pays about half of what you would make per line on straight transcription. It sucks. I am editing ASR mainly right now and my pay has been cut back because of it. MQ can also be very confusing and unorganized at times. They seem to constantly change the rules on job performance expectations, benefits, etc. Just my view of them.

it's about the same pay... - Amber

From what the representatives at MedQuist told us, it averages out to the same amount of pay. And they are getting our client so we would automatically be put on this client that we already know...so I suppose that would make the transition a lot easier.

MQ has been known to say anything to the MT just to get their way. There are no guarantees with MQ and please keep in mind MQ's partnership with CBay, an Indian-owned company. If your account was taken over by MQ because MQ promised to do the work cheaper, your account could be headed to India, i.e., out of your hands. As for your pay rate in writing, ask for a guarantee that you will stay working in this account for however long you want it. You may need that paperwork in the future.

Do you have anything to lose, really? I would say go ahead and accept the job at MQ. If you're unhappy at MQ, you can always look for work elsewhere while at least earning a paycheck.

Well, I realize I am in the minority of those who post here, but I like working for MQ. I suspect there are plenty more of us out there but unfortunately unless you complain or believe that the company is out to get you, you are accused of being management or blasted so we don't post often.

I have been here for 5 years. I started after the hospital I worked at for 20 years closed after Hurricane Katrina. There have been a lot of changes even since I started but so far I have no real complaints. I do not like ASR but I have managed to keep my pay about the same, albeit I do have to work harder for it.

If you have good work ethics and try your best to do well, you can. Being an MT used to be a lot easier (I've been doing this for 30 years, starting out on typewriters and using carbon paper) but like any other job/career, you have to continuously work on your skills and adapt to changes.

Like the other poster said, try it out. The worst that could happen is you won't like it and have to find another job, which is where you are now.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot - Amber

I appreciate your honesty. I think I will give it a shot. I don't have a lot to lose...I'm already trained on the location. I think what I was most worried about is the stories of people not having work and their paychecks being minimum wage and having to make up all their hours only on the weekends....I'm gonna hope for the best!

Thanks a lot - Amber - NJA

that is true, no jobs available. I would not be on this forum if I had work, been here just over 5 years myself and myself MT for over 30 years, coming to MQ at first was great, but slowly over the 5 years,,now I am min wage and NJA. those that are happy will soon be sad.

all depends on your accounts/supervisor - okay for now

As for me I have a great account that hardly even runs out of work and I seriously mean that. Others on this board post all the time that they are always running out of work. Luck of the draw I guess.

I cannot stand my supervisor, but others have posted how much they love theirs- luck of the draw there too.

I have been here almost 9 years and honestly I make more than I could anywhere in my little town and certainly more than doing transciption in house at our local hospital. For me for right now MQ is a good fit.

I had a similar situtaion over 6 years ago when my former employer closed its door. Everything the recruiter told me was a BIG FAT lie. They said I would make the same money, lie. My pay has never increased. Expect to make whatever you are hired at to be your pay until eternity. It has been an absolute nightmare. My experience has been that each and every time you are given an account and get use to it, they yank it out from under you and the process starts all over again. I am now on the worse account I have ever been on in my entire 15 year history in this industry. Like the other poster stated, DO NOT believe anything they tell you, it is usually a big lie. They promise a lot but deliver little. Thankfully, I'm getting out of this business before we are being paid in rupees.

Option To Get Out ...
Sep 20, 2011

Sorry in advance for the length of this post but I've been reading and I just couldn't sit still any longer.  I'm a long-time MQ employee - this is my 14th year.  When I first started out, the income was crazy.  Literally I made more money in bonuses and incentives than I made in my regular production pay.  It was not uncommon for my paychecks to be in the $2000 range.  Over the years, the bonuses and incentives ended, and to help supplement my income (I t ...

There Is Another Option.....
Oct 24, 2013

Our lives have become totally ruined by this company. Unfortunately, commiserating with each other, while helping to alleviate anxiety, will not solve the problem. I have thought of this option, and some friends have suggested the same thing, Class Action Suit!  There must be a way we can recoup our lost wages. I cannot believe that what this company has done to us is legal.  It may take awhile, but aside from finding another job that pays better (which is just not available), I believ ...

Another Option For Transitioning From MT
Mar 24, 2010

Transcribing the dictation of various physician assistants made me wonder what was involved in becoming a PA, so I looked into the PA programs in my state.  I have a BA and already have all the science prereqs, so I decided to apply.  I'm retiring from my full-time job (not medical related) in April and wondered what I would do with myself with just my part-time MT job to keep me busy.  Now I know.  I start in the PA program with the summer session.  If you have a ...

As An IC, Is It Really An Option To Get Paid On Time?
Nov 05, 2009

I'm just curious. I have worked as an IC and an employee. With the last job I took as an IC, I remember in the interview the woman speaking with me said "and the woman you'll be working for always pays on time." At the time, I thought that was rather odd. I mean, why would someone need to say that? Of course I get paid on time. Just like they expect their work done on time. Well it was a huge red flag that I ignored, because then on 4 different occasions over the next 10 months I didn& ...

Nuance Employees, Do You Have An HSA Or FSA Option Currently?
Nov 04, 2011

I'm reading about the difference between the two of these, and it looks like the employer withholds a portion of your income to cover medical expenses. I don't know if that has to be offered by the employer or if it can be set up somehow by anyone who qualifies due to a high-deductible insurance plan. Do you currently have any HSA or FSA arrangement with Nuance? ...

Career Option If You Have A Bachelors Degree
Mar 12, 2012

Interesting post on the coding board about this, so I thought I would mention it here. If you have a bachelors degree in any subject, you can qualify to take the RHIA exam by completing a postbaccalaureate certificate program in health information administration that is accredited by AHIMA.  That opens up a lot of job opportunities.  You should have little trouble with a program like that because of your healthcare background. There are only a few of those programs and some are extre ...
