Education assistance - sm

Posted: May 30, 2013

I am looking to go back to school to train in accounting. I thought I had seen in the past people talking about some education assistance we would be eligible for since work was going overseas (or something along those lines). Does anybody know where to get more information on this? Thanks!

#81128

It is still listed as Medquist

Here's a link to the more general - DOLETA/TAA info

This will give you an idea what they offer.  The link in the other person's post above is to the M*Modal-specific stuff, I think.

It should NOT be necessary for you to be laid off, as long as your available work/earnings have dropped (by whatever percentage they require) in the relevant times.  However, I've read here that some M*Modal employees are being told by their state unemployment offices or whoever they're talking with that in order to qualify they have to actually be laid off.  Not true -- as you can see if you read the brochure -- but you may have to persevere some if you're in one of those obstinate states.  (If you run into that, search up TAA on the M*Modal board and check out those posts.  As I recall, there were some informative ones from folks who had actually contacted the folks at DOLETA directly.)

Good luck in your new career!

Education Assistance - sm

This has nothing to do with the programs you're referring to but there is government assistance to everyone who wants to go back to school. I attend an online nonprofit university and don't have to pay anything out of pocket (at least until after I graduate and start working in my chosen field). Start with the FASFA application online to learn more. I get aver 5000. a year free money (Pell grant) 4000. a year from another grant and I borrow from a Stafford Loan so I can help supplement the cost of giving up my part-time job. Yes, I still am FT with MModal and FT with school and I have a family and am not in my 20s, but it still manages to all get done. For so long, I thought I couldn't afford to attend college but now I wish I had thoroughly researched it years ago. I have 1-2 more years to finish depending on how many classes I can get through but I am so glad I finally made the decision. (And I'm in my early 50s.) The reason why I am posting this is to encourage anyone out there who feels she's in a no-win situation with the trend of the MT industry. There are choices and we are not too old to start a new career. In the meantime, I'm one of those thankful just to have a job here at MModal. I stay for the benefits and realize if they terminate me for any reason, I'll get unemployment in my state. This all makes me sleep better at night.

Thank you! - sm

Thank you so much for your help and the words of encouragement! I am excited about this new venture and to know there are options out there to help me pay for it but am very, very worried about the financial burden I would put on my family since it has been so long without a good paycheck. I know going back to school is the way to go for my future, it is just a scary process to get started. Thank you!

Has anyone here ever used this "service"?   Just wondering if I should give it a try, I'm feeling at the end of my rope here.  I need this job, a job, and want to be able to handle the new stressors and cope with all these changes in the industry.    I'm not a newbie either, been here through thick and thin over the years, and lately I find myself typing and crying at the same time, feeling so fearful of my future at my age.  Maybe I'm developing some ty ...

Is Anyone Aware Of The Trade Adjustment Assistance Act?
Jun 12, 2012

I just found out about this government program.  From what I understand, it helps those who have lost all or part of their hours/income due to outsourcing of their profession, especially us older workers who need to retrain in order to reenter the workforce in another field.   It looks to me like Medical Transcriptionists should fit their description, and we should be eligible for some funding to get some training!   The catch is, in order to file, you have to have at least 3 pe ...

MAJOR VENT.  My paycheck from MQ was deposited into my account today and it just sent me into a panic.  Pay days are NOT supposed to feel like this - they are not supposed to cause you to put your head down on your desk and cry.  They are not supposed to be like this.  For the first time EVER I won't be able to pay my rent.  I'm a single mom, I've worked full-time with MQ for 14 years, I'm an MME (supposedly at the top of my career game) and I can ...

Education
Apr 13, 2011

Please help! I just completed an online MT course a month ago. While I was in the program, they added a couple classes, and in the process removed some of the course content from the class I was in. I now have to take the additional 2 classes (at an added expense) in order to "complete" their program. Their program was full of errors, and I was constantly contacting the school to correct THEIR answers! Needless to say, the level of education I received is not sufficient to gain employment, even ...

Bad Education

I went to school to be a medical coder. After I started the program I found out it was basically self taught. I completed it with a 3.8 gap. They didn't poo offer certification testing. It's been 3 years and I  still unemployed and not certified. What do I do? ...

Education Confusion!
May 09, 2010

So I am looking into making the switch from MT to coder.  The AHIMA program says it takes 15 months to complete and then you can sit for the CCA exam.  The AAPC program says you must complete it in 4 months and you can sit for CPC or CPC-H.  Wouldn't the latter be better?  I've been reading that CCA is pretty much worthless.  So, why would CCA take 15 months and CPC take 4 months?  Also, every job I've seen for a coder requires experience.  How c ...

Just Getting Started... Education??
Jun 17, 2011

Hello All! I have recently decided to begin a career in MT, and am trying to weigh my education options. I have a bachelor's degree in Hearing, Speech & Language Sciences, so I'm great with interpreting speech/language and am also pretty good at deciphering English as a second language. I've also worked for a hospital scheduling outpatient testing for the past three years, so I have a bit of a background in medical terminology (still so much to learn!) and the inner workings ...

Coding Education Timing
Oct 20, 2010

I'm looking for some feedback/advice on pursuing medical coding education.  I'm 53 and will be retiring from my current government position in about 3 years - about the time the ICD-10 will be in full implementation. (On the side, I work part-time as a medical transcriptionist.) I was advised to hold off on taking a medical coding course for a couple of years due to the fact I would be learning from the current ICD-9 and then have to have retraining later in the ICD ...

Medical Coding Education
Jan 16, 2014

Coding Schools/education

I think it would be very helpful for many people if some of the more senior coding people on this forum could advise on what new coders should look for in a school or training program.  I'm not looking for specific names, but rather that you should make sure your school teaches A, B and C.  Things you want to avoid are X, Y and Z.    Personally, my first school would probably have done the trick (a community college) if not for the fact that they only off ...

Extra Coding Education Question
Aug 24, 2012

I completed an associate's degree last winter and got my RHIT credentials.  I have applied for a couple local coding jobs, which I did not get.  They both had a coding test I had to take and pass before they would interview me.  I failed both of these tests miserably.  It was embarrassing.  One lady who was the HIM manager asked me if my program even taught me how to code!  Yes, I have my RHIT, but I don't really know how to code!  I know the basics, ...

AHIMA Education Requirements Question - Help!
Mar 15, 2015

I began at Andrews a while back in the CCS ICD-9 studies and had to delay school due to some unforeseen personal issues.  I am now reinstated and in the final module of ICD-9 but am wondering what will happen if I am unable to finish up and test (and pass) before the probable ICD-10 implementation in October.  Will AHIMA still honor my certificate with Andrews as the necessary education requirement or will it have to specifically be for ICD-10?  I know it will be up to me to study ...

Career And Education Advice For Medical Transcription
Nov 14, 2009

Hello, I am looking for advice from some of the seasoned MT's and those who have been in the field for about a year now.   I am looking into medical transcription; initially for part-time supplemental income and down-the-road as a full-time career.   Here are the questions that I have: Which schools, particularly online courses, are well known for developing successful MT's; more specifically which programs are good at helping their graduates land jobs?
