shoulder pain, please help - VeryOldMT

Posted: Apr 27, 2012

An old and chronic problem I have when doing MT work is that my right shoulder aches after just a shor time at the keyboard.  (I am left-handed).  It seems the constant mouse movement irritate it a lot.  I am now doing VRE type work and boy has it made it worse.  I know my right side is probably weaker than my left and I can work on strengthening it somehow but I wondered if anyone has any ideas for this? I do not like being in pain.  I've thought about a new chair but all the chairs I've looked at look the same and would not provide any help with this that I can see.  It's going to be a long day! Owie.

Why Are You Using Mouse? - Learn Keystrokes-see msg

Once you use the keystrokes for VR, you get fast at them very quickly. Just take the plunge.

The mouse is one of the most un-ergonomic tools they ever came out with. I don't use the thing to even do a Google search, reduce documents, bring them back up, fill out fields on Internet when buying on line, almost everything is keystrokes for me.

mouse, what else would I use? - VeryOldMT

ok, I'm dense, but I only know mouse so how can I replace it?

Thanks

instead of the mouse.

Or get a trackball to replace the mouse.
No Need to Cut Holes in Desk.... - See Msg

They'are just basic computer keystrokes, most of them. Ctrl + shift + right arrow will highlight a word and you can overwrite/delete that word. Shift right arrow will hightlight a letter, and you can overwrite/delete that letter. There are several of them. It's much, much faster. I THINK F1 in whatever program you have will give you the strokes, not sure.

It's icky at first (mouse seems simpler), but once you do them a few times, you can really sail along editing and really save yourself a lot of pain.

As for ASR, even if you don't use above method to edit, still use keystrokes for Skip Markers and things. Those strokes should be in a tutorial or F1. It's better than mousing around!

What I did - sm

Okay, here's what I did. Don't know if I can describe it well, but I could send you a picture via email if you like.

I was finally in enough pain to actually drill a hole into my desk and attach an approximately 4-inch wide x 15-inch long swivel "arm" to the desk, secured with a screw and washers for ease of moving it. I cut a mouse pad in half to fit the arm and placed my mouse on it. I can swivel the arm directly over my keyboard (with about 1 inch clearance), which means I only have to lift my right hand slightly to reach the mouse. When my shoulder/wrist/arm hurts, I can easily swivel the device to a new location, relieving whatever nerve compression might have been causing the pain.

Was it worth destroying my desk (drilling a hole in it)? Yes, indeedy. When I leave MT, hopefully in the near future, I'll just ditch the desk or fill the hole with wood filler and stain it to match. I'll do anything to stop the pain caused by doing transcription.

Trackball over Mouse! - LindaOz

From another old MT: The mouse is so unergonomic, I haven't used one for ages. The trackball I use and LOVE is the Logitedch TBC-21 (gray with red trackball)that runs so smoothly. I also had success with Kensington Marble trackballs, but they make different kinds and the last one was terrible. Don't buy the big one with the huge trackball as it's not ergo and doesn't last long. With the trackball you will be using your index finger to do all the movement instead of your poor shoulder. Good luck!

Agree - should use keyboard commands - Ayn

Anyone working on production, whether traditional transcripton or VR, should be using keyboard commands as much as possible. (Actually, anybody working on a keyboard period - MT or other)

You should rarely, if ever, reach for the mouse. Not only does using the mouse hurt your production, it - obviously - is not ergonomic and can cause a lot of pain.

Learn the keyboard commands is the best advice.
