anyone out there recently passed the mttest.com - GG

Posted: Mar 07, 2014

HELP? Has anyone out there recently passed the mttest.com (created by Career Step) that most all companies are utilizing to prescreen their candidates? I am a Career Step graduate (high honors) with many years experience working for a very large global transcription company; yet I cannot seem to pass the aforementioned test to save my life. I find this strange for the following reasons: 1. I passed the same (or nearly the same) test, on the 1st try, with a 99% combined score to graduate from Career Step. 2. My QC reports are ALWAYS 99-100%. 3. Before I submitted my test on mttest.com I had a proofreader, QC person, and a department head from the company sponsoring the test check my work. All 3 of them gave it a thumbs-up. Now, someone in their "recruiting" department told me I didn't pass the transcription tests. 4. I completed 727+ medical reports to graduate from Career Step. There wasn't 1 (one) time my transcription matched 100% with their "answer key" - not one time!!!! The Career Step students are told that their test allows for "acceptable stylistic variations." Bearing the above in mind, I called the supervisor that invited me to the mttest.com site to take the transcription tests. I asked her if a "live" person looks at the results of the submitted tests. She told me "yes...but they only compare it the answer key provided by Career Step. If they see any red then you dont pass" Does this sound right to my fellow MT's out there? Do we need to band together as a community and boycott ALL of the companies that use mttest.com for prescreening candidates???? It seems most companies are using some form of Career Steps test to prescreen their candidates. If the entire MT/MTE community refuses to take ANY AND ALL test(s) wherein the URL contains the following "mttest.com" we could effectively change the MT prescreening process... and right quick. In any event, I would love to hear from the community on this. Thanks for listening! My very best, GG

GG,

I am behind you 100% on this. I have nearly the same background as you do. I took some form the test on the "mttest.com" site twice this week and failed both times.

I say let's boycott the test and any company that uses it!! There is power in this community if we ALL stick together.

Blessings,

CRB

GG & CRB,

I am 100% behind you gals on this one!! I too am a graduate from the Career Step program. I have also been working for 11+ years in the MT industry. I've taken some version of the "mt.test" twice this week and did not pass either time.

If you and I both graduated from the Career Step program and can't pass the the test on mttest.com, how are other MT's passing that didn't attend Career Step?

BTW, I was told nearly the same identical thing that you were told when I asked if they actually look at the test rather than the "red" marks.

Let's do something about this unfair and clearly discriminatory testing process.

Sincerely,

RR

Just listen to the three of you - just passin through

First post, blah, blah, blah, I graduated with "high honors from Career Step." Nowadays, "high honors" doesn't mean diddly squat. Secondly, just because you had "the answer key" at your disposal, doesn't mean that MAYBE the company, had the Career Step test tailored to fit THEIR needs -- hence, you would not have access to that particular "answer key."

Thirdly, MANY MTSO's in their hiring process won't even consider graduates from Career Step and only want to hire graduates from MTEC or Andrews.

I have taken this test MANY times, and have only failed twice. In fact, the last job I was hired for (my current position), I didn't even have to take a test -- of course I have over 30 years of experience as well, so that makes a difference.

You also may be "rushing" through the test, thinking that you know the answers or may be even doing something wrong in the transcription portion of the test. Therefore, I would go over your answers with a fine-toothed comb.

Not knowing what you don't know - crystal ball

First, I find it wrong to have someone check your test before submitting it.

Second, I've listened to a lot of MTs complain about the tests they have to take, that they have a bazillion years experience, that they know everything, that they are perfect and yet they failed the test.

There is NOT some grand conspiracy to NOT hire you. What would be the point in that? It costs money to hire someone.

The reality is, I've hired a lot of MTs and checked on a lot of tests and some of you don't know what you don't know. Many of these tests have dictation errors in them, are you noting that? Many place emphasis on punctuation. Many want verbatim (not like the poster on here a while back who thought her way LOOKED BETTER).

If you aren't passing a test it's more likely because YOU AREN'T PASSING THE TEST. Not because someone is trying to stop you from getting a job or some other ridiculous conspiracy.

A little harsh, but I agree. - Plus

When I was searching for a job a couple years ago, I think I had to do mttest about 3 times and heard back from all 3 companies. I found out that the test is actually TIMED so if an MT candidate is having someone check their test, that eats up time and that could be a huge strike right off the bat.

In addition to all the things you brought up (and these tests do include dictator errors/discrepancies that do need to be fixed by MT), they are looking for extensive style and grammar knowledge, one of which is knowing the plural form of initialisms.

I don't know - I took it

and I thought it was easy, had no trouble doing/passing. Unless there are different tests for different companies? I was actually surprised it was SO easy.

MT Test Results-How do you know if you passed or not? - mt08

I have taken MT test 4 times in the last 2 weeks and have never received any notification of passing or failing.

How do you find out?

I never hear from any of the companies either.

Generally, when I have taken one of these tests, it goes by "sections." If you are allowed to go onto the next section, then you have passed that section, and you go forward until you get to the transcription portion of the test. From there, it's a guess

MTtest results - my experience

My personal experience was that each section I finished came up with a note that said I had passed (note, it said PASSED, not just completed) that section and could proceed to the next.

I never heard earlier - than 2 weeks

I was amazed at how long it takes for someone to get back to you after you submit a test. Don't give up yet!

Mttest Vs Career Step Mttest
Sep 30, 2010

On the mttest site I have noticed that some are by Career Step and others are not.  I always pass the ones that are not, but when Career Step is involved, I seem to be told every time I need more schooling and this is after being an MT for 18 years and also having run my own business.  Does anyone know of any companies that do not use Career Step for testing?  Where I work now didnt and I had no problems.  Other places I worked, I was not tested with Career Step involved and ...

Using Mttest For Companies
Mar 25, 2010

How exactly do you score well on these automatically graded tests from mttest?  I am a CMT with many years experience and while I do pass, sometimes I get a score in the 80s and then other times its the high 90s.  I have been told that some let it automatically score and others manually score them.  What is the secret?  Is it just a formatting thing that throws the scores off so much? ...

Boycott MTTest!
Jul 15, 2010

I believe that if we all boycott MTTest, that these companies will have to find other ways to test applicants.  From this point on, I will no longer take any tests through the MTTest website.  Also, any company who throws more than 3 or 4 dictations at you for testing purposes isn't worth working for.  So, MTSOs, get ready for the onslaught because I doubt that I'm the only one willing to do this.  No company is worth the grief of having to spend hours taking tests, ...

MTTest - Wondering
Jul 17, 2010

Regaring MTTest and their pass/fail inconsistencies - I'm wondering if they don't set these things to fail anything after a certain number of test takers.  I'm just saying, if I were an MTSO hring a weed-wacker like MTTest, and with the high number of applicants these years, I'd be saying something on the order of "just send me the top 20."  and so MTTest takes the top 20 from say...50, or even the top from after 2 days of open testing, and then 'defaults ...

What Is The MTTest Website?

Tips For Using The Mttest.com Site
May 12, 2010

The site is very literal.  Here are some tips. Objective: 1.  Thoroughly read the instructions.  Don't try to think about the instructions - simply read them and follow them.  For example if it tells you to type the correct spelling of a word into a field (picking a misspelled word out of a phrase), only type that word - not anything else.  2.  Look up every single word and definition before you make a choice.  I don't care how much you T ...

Mttest.com - What A Waste Of My Time
Sep 17, 2010

I just had to say that when I see a company looking for MTs and they have to test through mttest, I cross them off my list of potential employment.  What a waste of my time.  Took it years ago and would never do it again.  There has to be some other way or just look at a person's resume and phone previous employers.  If I have over 25 years of experience, took pride in getting my CMT and have tons of experience in every specialty, chances are I am a good bet.  Just venting. ...

MTTest Testing Sites
Dec 09, 2014

It has been my experience that any time a company requests that you go to their testing site to complete a test, it seems to be a waste of time in screening candidates.  The audio files are extremely hard to hear and half the time the audio skips.  There should be a better way to screen applicants than by using these testing sites.  It is a no-win situation.  You spend two hours doing their screening and trying to transcribe reports that are not the work type that they are ev ...

I have yet to pass one, how the heck, with say 3 minor errors can you possible pass these things? I want to quit so badly but have no prospective jobs.
