Windows XP no longer HIPAA compliant? - Old and Tired MT

Posted: Feb 25, 2014

That's just great-- who can afford a new computer?   Time to give up MT altogether.

You can have your computer - xx

upgraded to Windows 8, maybe even Windows 7 (which is more like XP than Windows 8), and you can probably have the RAM doubled as well, which would be very helpful. You don't have to get a new computer to upgrade the operating system.

It still costs money and for what we are paid--- - Old and Tired MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I wonder if it is even worth it. I had to get Word, a new foot pedal, an upgrade to my internet, etc., for the last place I applied and they only paid 6 and 3 cents. Needless to say, I didn't stay long. Everything is an expense to us and we are paid peanuts.

Why is Windows XP no longer HIPAA compliant? - anybody know?

[ In Reply To ..]
I've heard that XP is no longer HIPAA compliant, but does anybody know why?

Is it noncompliant now (today), or is it going to become noncompliant when Microsoft stops their support for XP in April?

In April. They won't maintain it, so they say it can be hacked - n/m

But won't a firewall work for that? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a really good firewall that blocks all ports and incoming connections. Won't that work to protect against hacking? My thinking is that if they can't get past the firewall to get in, then they wouldn't be able to do any hacking. Or am I wrong about that?
There will no longer - xx

be any incentive for any company providing security products to provide products or updates that protect computers running XP. It will become more vulnerable as time goes on.

Also, Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates for XP.
Thats terrible. Whats wrong with XP? - Why no more incentive to update and

Support? I haven't used mine in a while, but I really like XP.
It's called planned obsolescence and they want to sell new computers - n/m

Not planned obsolescence - see msg

I don't agree that it's really planned obsolescence, like a refrigerator that's made to break down in x-amount of years.

I think it has more to do with things changing, security, technology, etc. XP did not break down, it just sort of got pushed aside after so many years.

That being said, I don't think we need to have so many new Windows programs as often. That is designed to keep the consumer purchasing the product, for those who always want an "updated" version. Kind of like the person who has to have stainless steel appliances when nothing's wrong with their white or black appliances. Wait until the white appliance wears out, then go buy a stainless steel one.

The constant new Windows versions that keep coming out does have a bit to do with XP going out---the techs, etc., have enough to keep up with.

The world has moved on - xx

XP is not suitable for all the applications and other features people want now, and it is not compatible with tablets. There is no money in maintaining it or paying programmers to write updates for it. It's just business, not a conspiracy.

Windows XP and HIPAA - Anon100

[ In Reply To ..]
Windows XP has nothing to do with HIPAA. Microsoft is no longer going to support Windows XP and will not be issuing any more security patches or upgrades so if you use it you are at risk of downloading worms and viruses and are more likely to be hacked. Secondly, upgrading to Windows 7 is not that easy. Yes, you can double the RAM, but you may need a faster processor and there are other things you will need that may not be upgradable. It is not possible to upgrade from XP to 8. Plus, for what it would cost (in terms of labor), it would be cheaper to purchase a new PC. You can get deals - Dell sells refurbished Windows 7 boxes at a discount or you can get a laptop for the cost of an upgrade.

My computer shop guy told me the same thing regarding my present processor, etc., not being able to handle Windows 7. I did double my RAM on my XP machine and keep my virus program up-to-date, but until my MTSO tells me I have to get a new operating system (Win7), I'm going to use this one to death.
That's fine, but if you are looking for a new job, they won't accept it - n/m

Dell Refurbs - What I do

[ In Reply To ..]
I have not paid full price for a computer in years. I buy Dell refurbs, and have never had a lick of trouble. Worst that happened one time was I had to add some memory, but the chip was only $20, and we put it in ourselves.
Where do you buy Dell refurbs? - on their website?

HIPAA Compliant?
Apr 23, 2014

From what I am hearing, if you have an XP computer, you are not HIPAA compliant. It violates regulatory requirements. Then why is MM not supplying us with Windows 7? My XP computer they gave me was freezing up, so they sent me another XP. I asked them why they didn't send me Windows 7 and they said XP was cheaper. So now as of April 8, they are not HIPAA compliant. I would like to know how they get around this,,,,,,having many accounts and still having many employees submitting reports u ...

Oct 19, 2011

Hello, my doc is finally going digital after three years of begging him to! HIPAA - Need A Quick Check On HIPAA Rules
Oct 29, 2009

Hi, I need a quick check on HIPAA rules.  With respect to the health care debate, I want to write to my senator, etc., about a situation with a patient I transcribed on.  The only info. I intend to give is that the patient was a:  Russian immigrant, on welfare and receiving Medicaid benefits--when he should not have.  He and his "sponsor(s)" was responsible for his care and living expenses.  Further, I transcribed a note in which the doctor said that this patient wanted to re-sched ...

No Longer With MM
Jun 27, 2015

I am so thankful that I am no longer with MM.  I quit in May and it is the best decision I have made in a very long time.   I got so tired of the unreasonable hours, the constant changing of hours/days.  I got tired of the threats about quality (which is definitely unrealistic), then you get the threats about not having enough lines.  I don't have to tell all of you what  a terrible journey it is with MM.  It is the kiss of death and it will never be any b ...

Windows 7 And Using Windows XP Mode
Aug 05, 2011

Has anyone ever wanted to work for a company that only used Windows XP and you had Windows 7 but could virtually move to XP mode?  Could you download their software on the XP mode side and get it to work?  I had a job interview where their software only worked on XP.  I thought I could do that, but I had to also have Word 2003.  I only have 2010, but it has the compatability pack for 2003, BUT the client's software couldn't differentiate that.  If I maybe bough ...

Okay! I've had enough.  I was going to hang in longer but I am now being Aggressive and sending my resume out!  I won't be doing MT work anymore -- that's for sure!  Perhaps working at the local community college if not for the government.  At this point, I don't really care what I do because anything is better than this!  WooHoo!  It's a AHAA movement for me.  It won't be long now.  Best of luck to those who chose to stay wit ...

Are We No Longer Getting Break Pay?
Aug 17, 2012

I noticed today that the break pay section of the timesheet was gone today and when I clocked off a minute ago after working for 7 hours that in the "break" box, it said 0.00, when usually it would be 0.33.  Anyone know?  I know it's not a lot of money, but I usually get about 3 hours per pay period and about $30.  I would hate to lose that, cause every dollar counts. ...

How Much Longer Will This Continue?
Jan 25, 2013
