Well, I did it. I enrolled for summer semester. I am entering the rad tech program at my local col - MoMT

After years of thinking about going back to school and then talking myself out of it because I didn't want to face college again at age 40, I decided I need more job security, better pay and growth potential.  So I filled out the financial aid forms, enrolled in a couple of classes for the summer, and here I go.  I'm a little nervous actually.  Been a loooooonnng while since I sat in a classroom, took notes, and took exams.  My retention isn't what it used to be.  Not to mention, I'm stilling planning on doing the MT thing to get me through college.  Oh geez, who am I kidding, I'm a lot nervous!

Well, how about we form a support group for MTs going back to school to be something else?

Best of luck to you :) - qMT

I also signed up for classes this summer. Now I have to go take the CPT test so I can actually register for classes. Wow I had forgotten how hard algebra is, it's only been 30 years since I have done it. I was looking at the practice test and it looks intimidating... but I will get through it somehow.

I'm just finishing my first semester back at college but before I could get going again I had to test in math to see where I would place, what I needed to retake, etc. I bought a book called Algebra Made Easy or something like that (like Algebra for Dummies) and studied it and worked problems for two months. Couldn't believe how much I had forgotten. I did manage to test out of all the algebra, though, so lots of studying but it saved me lots of time and money in the long run.

Guess Ill have to try something other than rad-tech - - I failed algebra in h.s., and took studyhall inste

The second time around can be a charm! As you get older, your priorities change and your thinking changes, too. What might have been an issue in high school doesn't need to be an issue as an adult.

If your high school friends were a negative influence on you, you won't have them dragging you down. Just keep an eye on the way YOU are influencing yourself, so that you don't fall back into any old and counterproductive habits.

Textbooks can sometimes make courses more difficult. It often helps to supplement the school's textbook with a review book in that subject. You'll have two versions of the material, and review books often have very CLEAR explanations.

You can get review books at bookstores like Borders and Barnes & Noble. There will be a whole section of them. You'll find algebra, English, and tons of others.

There may also be a review or test-prep book for the college entrance tests that you'll be taking. A week or so working in one of those might help you avoid having to take some classes. Especially if you would have to take those classes for no credit, as prerequisites for the "real" classes, it can be worth your while to review.

If you're very uncomfortable with the notion of taking algebra again, you might try auditing it first. Then, the next semester, take it for real. It might be just what you need.

I am finishing up my first pre-req class for rad tech now. - NM

After so many years being an IC MT, I am so confused about what I want to do! What did your son tell you to be when you grow up? :)

Sounds like a good idea. BTW, is it hard to get - financial aid? Is it a loan or a grant?

I'm considering school, but currently I can barely even feed myself, let alone pay tuition for classes, and gas to get there.

Tuition aid - Long Time MT-NY

[ In Reply To ..]
I just went back to school in January. I'm at the community college. I got enough in grant money to pay for my whole tuition and took the loans to live on while I'm going to school. I left Transcend because I was sick of waiting around for work and not being paid for it. I have a pt IC job and I'm thinking of working for the local garden center pt where my son works. Between the grants and the loans I will get more in a year than I made last year transcribing.

Did you find out about the grants at the cc? - myka

I am getting read to go back to school. Did you find out about the grants from the community college?

Two years ago I went back to college to finish my bachelor's in health care management. I figure it can't hurt to have that degree (I hope something pans out from all my work and $$)! Three classes and I am done!! In regards to algebra, I flunked algebra in H.S. For this degree I not only had to have algebra 1, but intermediate algebra. It is easier when you are older and especially when you are paying for it you have a tendency to work a lot harder (at least I did) than when I was in college at 18. Radiology is a good field!

M-Tech Jumpstart Editing Program?
Jun 18, 2012

Hi all, I'm considering going to school to get into this field. I was looking into going to M-Tech and they told me they have two programs: one being the standard medical transcriptionist program, and the other being just for editing. I'm a bit confused about that though. What exactly is the difference? The editing program is less expensive to go to, but is it good? Are there any jobs out there for it? Thanks for any help about this :] ...

Just Enrolled At Andrews!
May 11, 2010

Okay, so after much debate and research, I enrolled in Andrews course for coding yesterday! :)  Now I'm just waiting for my materials to arrive, reading over my 1st set of instructions, and trying to navigate my way through loads of information on the student forum.  All I can say is WOW.  I think this course is going to be wonderful and very challenging.  I'm actually a bit overwhelmed at the moment! LOL!  But I'm excited!     ...

Has Anyone Enrolled In The PCIP Health Ins Plan?
Aug 29, 2011

Am just curious, is anyone currently enrolled in this?  Do you feel it's a good deal?  I haven't had health insurance in about 10 years and looked into this.  For where I live (NV) and my age (46) it's $260/mo with a $3000/$2000 deductable.  For $350/mo it's a $1,000/$1500 deductible.  For either plan it's 80/20 with an OOP cap of $5950.00, then it's 100% paid.  Co-pay for either plan is $25.  They have a pretty extensive provider ...

Transcend Employees...entering Time In TimeSaver
Feb 07, 2012

I need help and need to know how you all enter your time in TimeSaver.  I was told to only enter the time you are actually typing or editing and do not enter the time you are researching or reading work emails, etc., only when your "hands are on the keyboard".  So, this obviously won't equal to 8 hours a day just by entering this time, so how do they figure in that we are full-time employees this way?   If I only enter 5 or 6 hours a day instead of 8 then they can ...

Is It Common To Have A Limited Amount Of Work During The Summer Season?
Aug 05, 2012

I'm curious if this is throughout a lot of MT companies where the summer seasons are the slowest in terms of receiving work. I used to have an abundunt amount of doctors to transcribe for across multiple accounts, but now all of a sudden that has changed, and I am almost always out of work and I no longer transcribe for what I'm estimating as half to 3/4 of the list of docs. Is this something normal? Do doctors get together and take a 3-month hiatus at once, or something...? I'm p ...
