In the mail today I got a letter stating I was eligible for a Pell grant. - Thanks to the poverty wages of Transcend

Posted: Apr 21, 2010

I had to look up what it was because I had never heard of it.  Turns out they are given to poor folks.   I don't know what made them send it to me but it does have my name on it so I know it is for me.   They must know I work at Transcend.

It is only good for vocational training, cannot be for more than one year and must focus on skills necessary for securing entry level employment.  I don't know what direction to go in from here.  I certainly will look into it as I have 90 days.  I would like to get out of transcription, certainly away from Transcend.

You don't have to be poor or impoverished to get a Pell. - LOL nm

for a Pell grant. It may vary per state, but there were income limitations that were fairly low - $25,000.

Many in our country are eligible. One company did not make you a victim of poverty - My Viewpoint

[ In Reply To ..]
Most of the country has problems these days. The best thing we can do is take responsibility for ourselves and not try to place blame on others. You can waste a lot of energy blaming people that could be better spent improving your own situation. If you are not doing well in your current job or even in your current field, it would be smart for you to find something else, but don't play victim. That gets so tiresome.

My viewpoint - Nick

Very well said. There is no such thing as a victim. What is important is not so much what happens to us as how we react to that and deal with it. One of the sayings by which I have lived my life is: THERE ARE NO VICTIMS; THERE ARE ONLY VOLUNTEERS.

Victim - RLee

[ In Reply To ..]
I do believe she is a victim if she is a Transcend employee. They tell you what you want to hear and at times you do believe what they say because it sounds good at the moment and you want to believe things will get better when in reality it is all a lie. So, therefore, by listening to their constant excuses and lies on whatever level eventually you become a victim - but not by choice, only because you believed in what they told you. On the other hand once you figure them out and choose to stay employed there and take the beating then of course you are not a victim - it is your own fault. Just my opinion

Okay, but can't one choose not to be a victim, by quitting? - What do you think

[ In Reply To ..]
The way I look at it, you only are a victim if you have no other options and someone does something bad to you that you can't fix.
Exactly - RLee
[ In Reply To ..]
Unfortunately sometimes you have no options and by that I mean a job lined up and need a paycheck and believe in what they tell you so you fall a victim. But on the other hand, once you stop believing in them and find out their true colors and do not look for other options, choose to keep taking the beating, then you are NOT a victim, it is self-induced.

Letter from school or did you apply - Skeptical

[ In Reply To ..]
I would be skeptical about this letter if you did not complete the FAFSA which is what you complete to apply for federal aid for school including the Pell grant, then I would check that letter. Also, Pell grants are not just for vocational education. Sounds like a shady school solitication to me. Don't fall for it. Do some research.

Pell Grant - Ancient MT

[ In Reply To ..]
It's not just for poor folks but it is based on financial need. Many middle income "folks" qualify.

And it's not just good for vocational training, so perhaps you might want to look into that. Pell grants can be applied to degree programs.

Sounds to me like you're being given a sales pitch for a school?

I agree with the above about looking into this. I receive.. - Sims

Pell grants but I have to go through the FAFSA every January. All three of my college aged kids and myself qualify due to my "income."

Pell grant info in the mail? - Ex-MT

I agree with another poster on here. If you receive anything via snail mail or email about receiving money for school whether it be a Pell Grant or otherwise, don't even look into it. If you choose a program that is a certificate program, associate program, or bachelor program at a reputable college or university, the financial aid department will see if you are eligible for a Pell Grant first thing, after they receive your FAFSA form. You HAVE to fill out the FAFSA form in order to receive any of this "aid" whether it be in the form of Pell Grants or government student loans.

As far as being "poor folk" in order to get a Pell Grant, that is partially true. You will receive a number (EFC), which basically determines what kind of grants and student loans you are eligible for. I have NEVER qualified for any type of grant including Pell Grant until this past year, which I probably won't even get to use. I've been laid off for almost a year with no income except unemployment and so that brought down my EFC enough to probably consider me for a Pell Grant; however, I finish my bachelor degree this summer and so it really will not do me any good. My sister on the other hand, is divorced, has two boys, and lives in the house that she and her husband bought, and she has a job and receives child support. She qualified for Pell Grants every year, while obtaining her bachelor degree, because of the divorce and kids . . . She made more money than me but qualified because of that. The system is screwed up. :-) lol

Just be sure that you talk to a regionally accredited college or university financial aid office yourself BEFORE giving anyone any money.

Pell Grant - Anonymous

I would agree with being cautious about any offers in the mail for Pell Grants and whether or not this is a legitimate offer. The FAFSA application process is pretty complex; I've been told that the applications have to be filled out very carefully or they get rejected, no grants would be offered without jumping through a few hoops first and the school has to be an accredited institution.

Ah, that strikes a cord. Poverty wages at TR. You are not kidding are you? Not only poverty wages, but they don't honor contracts either. I think they started their decline when they merged with MDI. Good luck with your Pell grant.

Good luck, I myself am trying to get away from Transcend. Have you not noticed that lately there seems to be a descrepancy in the line count, just since the "new payroll" system. Watch your lines carefully, since the new system, not one of my paychecks has been correct.

Pell Grant Question (hopefully This Is The Right Board)
Dec 12, 2011

I recently applied for a Pell Grant through FAFSA, and I had to pick a college from their scroll down list, so I picked the closest community college listed as none of the online courses in which I was interested were listed as choices (unless I missed something).  The preliminary report said it appeared I would qualify for both a Pell Grant of $2300 and possibly another grant that was about $9500.  Two days later I received an email saying I was my application had been processed ...

New E-mail Today From Payroll Stating New PTO Rate
Jul 23, 2010

Did anybody get an e-mail like this today?  Just about 4 PM when I was starting my shift, I got a letter from payroll saying I would now be getting $7.50 an hour when I take PTO, when before I was told by payroll, it would be $9.50 an hour. This is the rate you have when you take a module or are in an MT conference. Anyways, ever since I started with Spheris, I got $9.50 an hour and have continued at this pay even after Medquist took over.  They said it is based on production since De ...

Letter In The Mail: Why MQ Is The Best Company To Work For
Nov 13, 2009

I think that is the letter many of you are referring to.  They could have just sent me the cost of the letter instead of sending one, even if it is only around 55 cents.  Think about is 55 cents x thousands of employees..... thats a chunck of change.  The letter outlined why MQ is the best company to work for and how they are glad I chose MQ as my employer.  This just seems like an attempt to keep us, very stupid, but they have had loads of people up and quit just in the last ...

Hi all my fellow MTs:)  I was given a letter of reprimand, informal warning, that I signed in too early, I think it was 10 minutes early, because the day before I had logged in 7 minutes late, yet they told me it was okay to go over at the end of the shift, just don't log in early.  Now, I have that letter in my file (my first notice).  I also have not gotten a good line count because I have been OOW almost every day of the week, yet they assured me they were working on somet ...
