20+ year MT has question about work fatigue - GioNYC

Hi, I just found this site and board and since I don't know any other MT's I thought this would be the proper place for this question. After transcribing all day the last thing I want to do is talk on the phone. Am I just losing it now or what. Gio NYC

After listening to docs, etc. for 8 hours, I don't want to hear anyone talking in my ears, even on the phone, for a few hours. You just need a quiet break. Have your phone chats later on. Nothing wrong with that. It's just a new routine, and it doesn't mean your losing anything.

negativity and back biting on this board, and if you are looking for a "friendly place to chat" this definitely is not it. Most of the time if you post anything, you will get 15 people arguing with you and putting you down...no matter what the subject is. They have run off more than one person off this board, myself included. So don't feel you have come to a "chat room" or anything, because it is definitely not like that! Just giving you fair warning. want to spend endless hours on the computer just because it's there. I have about 5 sites I checked each day and after that pretty much done for the net.

When I worked full time doing this for many years, I found I couldn't stand to hear a radio going. The TV didn't bother me, the the radio did. I've never been strong on talking on the phone - maybe that's why and I didn't realize it.

Ha! I can't stand listening to the radio either, though I used to love music when I was younger...couldn't live without it in fact. However, this is definitely a plausible explanation as to why I don't ever want it on when I'm in the car! Too funny!

I don't read books, papers or anything as after a day of reading a report and listening to make it correct, I can't concentrate!

I get bombed by people stating "you don't read?" They just can't believe it.

The other thing is I don't want to be near a computer and I am missing out on photos my grandbabies because I don't get on facebook but after working 2 jobs, dont' like the computer at all!

Am I weird?

Why are you missing out on photos? You shouldn't have to go on FB - your kids should be e-mailing those photos to you directly. You are the GRANDMOTHER, after all! You can check your e-mail on your break - how nice to see those little faces in the middle of your workday.

I don't know how you cannot read, but that's your choice and it doesn't make you weird. It helps me relax, and takes me away from the humdrum, depressing world of human drama and trauma that is MT. I do stay away from news most days - I listen to people's problems all day long and I don't need to listen to it on the news.

I am checking out my community college catalogue and getting excited at so many interesting courses. I'm not looking for a long, drawn out process or degree, just some subjects that will be fun, creative and could also translate into making me more marketable. As an MT, I lean more toward writing, computer, and maybe even something medical, as opposed to something like car mechanics or accounting. Any ideas? ...

Just now got notification (New Years Eve) that there will be a new service area South right after the first of the year (figures, right?) I know this happened to the North region about a month ago. Ive never not given a notice, but I interviewed today and might get the job. You all know the deal, I just can't afford to work here and they want to fill the position Im trying for immediately. Do you think after only 6 months, I have to give them a notice? If so, how much of one? It feels so wrong to just up and quit, but I can't pay my bills!
