With the new year need to think about - where this job is heading

Posted: Jan 01, 2013

I spent the morning reflecting and trying to figure out what to do and where this profession/company is heading.  In doing web searches found that MModal is opening up yet another center in Mysore, India and hoping to employee 500 employees.  I guess I am trying to figure out if it is indeed cheaper to employee Indians than US based employees after all the perks the Indians get like healthcare for the whole family including parents until they are 80, gym, free transportation, the cost of those buildings to put those employees in etc., and how many US based MMEs their reports go through, and I think they get paid 1.something rupees per line, which if I am correct equates to being (I think) 0.02 per line in US money.  Is it really cheaper?  I would be intrested in knowing what the around about salary is for an Indian MT.  I looked, but really could not find anything definite.  It is really sad that we live in a country that gives so much to other countries such as our jobs, etc., and we have people starving in our own country.  I remember hearing this saying when I was a child growing up "charity begins at home."

We are all so stressed out and I think I am not alone when I say I just do not know what I want or should do.  If you go back to school, now you are putting yourself in more debt or maybe find yourself in another dead-end job.  It just seems no matter which decision you make you will just find yourself right back where you started making a little more than min. wage if you are lucky.  It seems to me like they are trying to starve us all out instead of doing the right thing and laying people off (if that is what needs to be done) because they do not want to pay umeployment.  They created this situation and at the very least should do something, but I know they will not.  It is too bad that we cannot all unite and doing something, but being home-based that almost seems impossible. Sometimes I just feel so alone and like a failure.

Sorry for the long post.  I guess I just needed to share, vent, and let someone else know out there they are not alone.

I feel the same - me

I know how you feel - ex-Nuance MT

I think a lot of MTs feel the way you do. I know that I do. I spent time and money training for MT and thought it would be a good career path for me at the time. It is hard imagining training for something else and having it turn out the way that MT has. I would suggest talking to a career counselor if you can and exploring other careers. You could also trying just going to your department of labor or career center and looking at the available jobs. If you don't have to work from home, there are a lot of jobs that you can do that pay more and have better benefits than MT without even any additional training. Another idea, if you are thinking about going to school but not sure what is right for you, is to try some free classes online through the Open Courseware Consortium. That way you can try out different subjects and see what interests you and what you are good at without incurring any additional expenses at first. I know that you can get really beaten down as an MT and feel like you have no options. I quit Nuance just over a month ago and am finally starting to see things in a different light. It is amazing what just stepping away from it for a little while will do to help you regain your spirit and start to think about a new path. I'm working part-time as an IC now and taking some classes. I'm not sure where I'm headed yet, but the future is brighter than it was at Nuance. I wish you the best of luck. It is a new year and a great time to find a new path for yourself.

Oh my gosh - thank you so

If you were an Indian CEO and it cost about the same bottom line to either employee US workers or Indian workers....

MModal does not have an Indian CEO - anon

It is now owned by JPMorgan. This has been discussed extensively here. Here is the CEO:

I believe these two companies are run by brothers, cousins, father/son, something. They are taking over the world and that way its not a monopoly. Something for sure is going on...

It is not owned by JP Morgan. They just bought shares, and not all shares. They are an investment company.

American or foreign owned is irrelevant in the corporate world. A corporations only goal is to make a profit and those in charge love money, not country.

I totally agree with you. I feel exactly this way too. I have been let go twice from the same company, this last time due to my reluctance to accept voice recognition. I did that at Nuance and I know what it means for us. I do feel like a failure too, as if it were all my fault. I have worked hard, done my best, all for my job to once again come to this. I wish I had done more with myself a long, long time ago, but I was good at this and so here I am. I am thinking about applying for a hospital at home job but I ask myself, will they eventually outsource, go to speech, etc. So will I be back at square one just as you are saying, with a minimum wage job? I feel it's worth the try I guess. I am also lookin at some accounting jobs as I have this experience also. Perhaps I should lean toward the accounting. Working like this from home makes us feel alone. They have us by the neck and they have the advantage, these MTSOs and they just don't care. It's not their salaries being involved. Cutting us just makes more for them. There's no future in this. If you bust your tail you can get over 200 lines per hour all for maybe 9 bucks an hour wtih no possible raises, being made to feel you are lucky to have what you have. There's just no need to stay in this situation anymore.

Is it a tax advantage for this company? sm - anon

Aside from all the buildings, free transportation and health insurance, etc., I wonder if it is a big difference in taxes they would pay in the US versus India. Unsure of how this works. It sure seems with all the freebies and layers of QA involved here, it would be a wash. Something is missing.

I am guessing - here, but

I would venture to say that due to our government and all the tax right offs or breaks whatever you want to call them they are probably incented to offshore. Maybe??? Our government created these situations and perhaps if some of these laws were changed and companies were financially penalized for such acts I bet a lot of these companies like ours would change the way they do business.

India has national health insurance - old and burned out

New Year, New Me!
Jan 19, 2011

I am checking out my community college catalogue and getting excited at so many interesting courses.  I'm not looking for a long, drawn out process or degree, just some subjects that will be fun, creative and could also translate into making me more marketable.   As an MT, I lean more toward writing, computer, and maybe even something medical, as opposed to something like car mechanics or accounting.  Any ideas?     ...

Here's To The New Year -- More BS

Besides issues with a company that seems to have workflow problems and therefore tells the independent contractors to not work on their scheduled days because the work is low or on another day is sending e-mails that there is extra work and everyone needs to hustle , there is now a notice that there will be an adjustment in line rates.  Of note, this company does not pay the highest line rates to start with. They want a schedule and we're expected to be available AND must produce a min ...

Another Year Of Benchmark

That's right!  If you are working FT as an MT and are NOT making at least $70,000 per year, you are either: * Lazy/Not ambiious or determined enough.  Your skill set is low and you haven't beefed it up with extra classes, etc. because you are INDOLENT. * Stupid/Sloppy:  Your quality sucks, your work is rife with errors, you are not a "perfectionist." *  You are a loser with low self-esteem, otherwise you would be commanding and getting 0.12 per line for your ...
