In response to "driveby alert from someone who knows better" - cj

Posted: Sep 05, 2011

I posted this below but want to move it up here so people actually see it!

I also am a coder who has been in the field of coding for many years. I worked for a consulting firm doing coding for a very, very large hospital/trauma center and medical college. Guess what - the acct was lost. Guess why we all lost our jobs with this company. because all the new clients are looking for an offshore option in order to cut coding costs ANd because it gives them 24-hour coverage.  This is not chicken little. This is, unfortunately, the way the world is going. the company now has an office in India and has several coders working there and is currently training more. You can be as naive as you want but a lot of coding is going to be in india soon!  Outside of the States they have a leg up as the rest of the world already uses ICD-10 and we are way behind in getting there.

So, you're saying the degree I am getting now (RHIT and then RHIA) is a waste? - nm

Your frustration is understandable - sm

Your frustration is understandable, but after reading the whole story below, I think maybe you're believing everything they told you.

It isn't unusual for contract companies to lose a contract. That alone doesn't mean everything is going to India. Also, it was the India company that told you "all the new clients are looking for an offshore option." Well, to THEM it WOULD appear that way, wouldn't it? They're not seeing all the people who do NOT want to offshore, because those people wouldn't even inquire with them.

All the coding jobs are not going to India. All the coding jobs are not going to be taken away by EHR. All the coding jobs are not going to be taken away by computer-assisted coding.

And there is absolutely no reason India would have any kind of leg up on US coders because of ICD-10. Maybe they told you that, but it's as ridiculous as saying that EVERYONE is looking to send their coding offshore. I'm sure of this because I already work with ICD-10. I have factual support for what I am saying. I'm sure some Indian company is proclaiming their superiority in this regard, but there is absolutely no basis in fact for it. I know one huge fact that completely negates that opinion, and I'm not going to say what it is. Everyone who knows ICD-10 already will understand this.

Arguing about this isn't going to change your opinion. You had a bad experience and you believe it is a sign of the times. I disagree.

I'm not even sure we should assume you are cj . . . I think cj was taken over by a pod from India.

just so you know... - cj

I did not say all coding was going to India. I said some. It was not an Indian company telling us this, it was a US company. As they took on new work, more and more clients were asking for an offshore option. So, no, I don't think all coding will be going to India, lost to EMR, or lost to computer assisted coding, but I sure do think some will. I also have factual support for what I am saying. I am seeing it happen. Yes, I had a bad experience. Yes, I do think it bodes poorly for some coding in the future. But let's face it, not all MT went to India either, but it sure didn't do the field any good that some did, did it. It was a downhill slide once it started going. There is still MT left in the US, but a lot of it isn't so great, wages sure did take a hit, etc., etc. And one only has to look at the MTs on this board to see how people feel about what it has done to MT here in the US. You are right. Arguing won't change my opinion. You may think coding is 100% safe here in the US but I disagree with that. That is just the way it is. I didn't intend to start anything. I was just simply telling what had happened to me and the coders I was working with.

Appreciate firsthand account - MR

I appreciate your firsthand account. I really don't know why someone has to keep responding to you by proclaiming it will never happen (crystal ball I guess) and, even crazier, trying to refute your own experience. There is so much denial, though I have to say I remember that it was that way years ago with the MTs I knew. The bottom line is if there is a way to cut costs, hospital administration is going to be look into it.

Question for CJ - Are you a credentialed coder, a CCS? - Curious

[ In Reply To ..]
I think most of us remember reading your post before, but I can't remember if you are a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or not. I was wondering if you are not, if that might be causing a problem for you finding a coding job. I don't know. I'm just asking.

CCS now! - cj

[ In Reply To ..]
Actually I didn't have a problem finding a job, even with the CCA. I did, however, decide that a CCS may be a good way to go for the future since it undoubtedly will offer more options to me. So now I am a CCS. Our last day with the company was June 30th, and July 1st I started working for the hospital. I was very, very fortunate!

Antivirus Scam Alert
Feb 25, 2014

On 10/8/13 I downloaded Antivirus Security Pro per instructions and they immediately charged my credit card $99.99.  It was started that I was automatically granted a 12-month access in which to re-download at any time.  When downloaded, there was an icon on the desktop and the program listed in the folder on C drive.  My old antivirus was still good, so I did not try to the product right away.  Around 11/1/13 did try it and it had disappeared, icon and program.  Tried t ...

Fiesa Error Alert Emails - When Does It Stop?
Mar 21, 2013

After reading the emails below, I had to post. After starting with Nuance, getting great QA reviews, great post audit reviews, and thinking I was doing well - I have gotten THREE major alert emails in 2 days. I have since discovered these were reviewed by Offshore QA. Why? Do we not have enough reviewers onshore? And one of the jobs I had already gotten an email about as I had sent it up for blanks - the QA had reviewed it and I had viewed it - why was it reviewed again?? The onshore QA di ...

Anyone Have Any Tips On Staying Alert/functional During 3rd Shift? Sm

I only have an hour window between my 2nd shift job and the 3rd shift job, and I try to sneak in a nap, but after a couple of hours I find myself yawning and losing focus. Coffee doesn't seem to help nor do any of the energy drinks. Any tips you might have would be greatly appreciated. TIA. ...

Caution To Students And New Grads - Scam Alert - Do MT Work (Internship) For Free
Mar 10, 2011

There is still another scam company out there offering to help "train" students and graduates. They will kindly let you do their real work, the work clients are paying them for. This is unacceptable and unethical. It will not look good on your resume because potential employers do not look kindly on this. If, for example, they find out that you did your 'internship' with XYZ Company, you will probably never know the reason why your resume was rejected or tossed.  Working for free ...
