A couple of questions for the MM coding trainees - The Typing Dead

Posted: Apr 01, 2014

(1)  Do you only fail if you fail a final at the end of the course, or are there tests throughout the course you have to pass to continue on?

I assume if you do not pass a test to pass on, they cannot charge you for the course.

(2)  Did they ever tell you how much that would be?

After all, it is not a credentialed for-profit coding school, they are probably using their already in-house employees as instructors, and they aren't providing any high dollar book material.  How much can this course be costing them per student?  Just curious about that.

The program for coding (RHIT) at our local Rose State College runs 2 years (plus summers) and costs about 7K.  I know those people get jobs.  I looked into it many years ago.

the lady that is teaching us has a doctorate. - so no its not just some employee

[ In Reply To ..]
From what I understand it is a fail if you do not pass the final exams every 2 weeks. Someone asked on our call if we made a 93 would they give us some leeway and we were told at this time that is a no. You must make a 95 or leave the program. Pressure, anyone?

No you only have pay back the bonuses.

Well, they could have a PhD on staff, - The Typing Dead

Instructor Professional Biography
I have been working in the Health Information Management field for over 25 years. I spent many years as a coder in an acute care hospital. My coding responsibilities included the coding of inpatient, outpatient, emergency room, and physician records. I created and implemented the concurrent coding and documentation improvement programs that are still in use today. I spent several years on the road as a consultant; much of this time was spent in the education, designing of new programs and management. I have taught off and on through the years as my schedule has allowed. I love the health information field and I love teaching, so with this course I get the best of both worlds. I look forward to working with each of you and hope that you grow to love health information as I do.
that doesn't say anything about a PhD - nm

I've just become used to being blasted on this board for anything I say.

Great program, but it is HIT, - not "coding."

[ In Reply To ..]
The cost, duration, content, and outcome of the Rose State program is not comparable to a coding program because . . . it isn't coding. It is health information technology leading to the RHIT credential. The RHIT is not a coding credential, although all RHITs have had coding courses. A lot of RHITs don't even like coding, and loads of them hate coding. If a student wished to take a coding certification exam, they would be prepared for the CCA.

Coding programs offered by schools just like that typically take one year. It would cost roughly half that, or just about 3800, plus books, and it would lead to the CCA.

What type of school prepares for CCS or CPC?

Many facilities will hire an RHIT over a CCS - for a coder

Any day of the week. I don't understand it, but there are numerous jobs saying "RHIT or RHIA preferred".

Really, you should have a clue what you are talking about before you respond.

RHIT versus CCA - Coding certifications

[ In Reply To ..]
I have both the RHIT and the CCA certifications. I had the CCA first and could not even get an interview, but when I finished school and earned my RHIT I had 3 interviews for coding positions. The RHIT is more preferable and many of the coders I work with are RHITs.
