I sure wouldn't...can't see any reason to even mention it.

that's what I thought. - OP

If you're talking about a resume, I wouldn't put anything that lasted less than 3 months unless it was intended to be a temp job or served some genuinely useful purpose in terms of job skills. 3 months (90 days) is a standard "probationary" length, and if you were questioned about that job's absence from your resume, you could simply reply that you and the employer mutually agreed to not complete the probationary period.

However, there may be instances where a prospective employer "demands" a "complete" employment record. I would have to consider in that circumstance what the risks of not mentioning the job were, compared to the risks of the prospective employer tracking down derogatory statements from a former employer that only lasted 2 weeks. On top of that, I think most former employers would have the legal sense to not say anything slanderous about somebody who only lasted 2 weeks - what would be the point? And if they did, I would hope that the prospective employer would not put as much credibility on those comments as they might on a longer-lasting employer's remarks.

Because the way employment laws are written, my legal counsel advised me to ONLY do this and ONLY this:
1. Confirm the dates people worked.
2. Answer (either yes or no): "Would you hire this person again?"

That is ALL. No matter how great or how lousy the MT, the above is all that should be said to protect one's 6 o'clock.
You're absolutely right, but.... - anon

What your legal counsel told you is 100% correct advice, but you'd be surprised how many reference-giving bosses apparently don't read their legal memos!

We have personally called former bosses pretending to be prospective employers, trying to find out whether a reference is giving a good reference or a bad reference, and the majority of the people listed as references gave a LOT more info than just dates of employment. In our cases, it was good info, not slanderous, but we still consider carefully now how to phrase former employers' contact info on the resume! Lest you think I've gone split personality, the "we" reference is to my spouse and me. There have been times when both of us were concerned about what our references were saying about us.

Keep in mind that "references" and "employers" can mean two different things. A list of references is generally people you expect to give you a good report. A list of former employers could mean that whoever happens to answer the phone that day is the one who gives the reference. While the HR personnel hopefully have been trained to only give dates of employment and answer the "would you rehire" question, other random people may end up being the ones to answer the phone.

You make some great points. I think that having the State of California as a client for a decade really tuned me up to legal issues. For example, you could not say to anyone (even someone of the same gender,) "You look nice today." The risks of sexual harassment were there. I think there is a big difference between telling another female that you like her haircut and saying to some guy "Whatcha doing afer work, baby?" but the state makes no differentiation. California is political correctness gone totally amok, but don't get me started. (Insert yelling symbol here.)

Question Regarding Resume
Nov 19, 2009

I have a question and maybe someone out there knows the answer.  I have a resume which I created on Word.  I would generally send it as an attachment to an e-mail; however, I'm finding that recruiters for some reason are requesting the resume be pasted into the e.mail.  If I do that, I lose my formatting on the resume and the text gets all messed up. Does anyone know of a solution?  I feel really dumb! Thanks!   ...

Resume Question/advice - How Much Is Too Much?
Feb 01, 2011

Someone posted some excellent points the other day about what they, as a recruiter, look for on a resume.  Keeping it to 1 page -  should it then just be the name of the place and the dates of employment?   No need to put reason for leaving?   Potential employers can ask that if/when they call or interview you?  That creates time gaps between jobs - wondering if that looks good or bad at first when looking at a new resume?  No matter how tight I squeeze ...
