Webmedx partners with NLPI - Confused and Curious

Posted: Sep 28, 2010

Does anyone know anything about Natural Language Processing Solution: MedLee? Webmedx partnered with NLPI. I have been researching it, and it seems very high tech. I can't wrap my brain around it. Is this a step closer to phasing out MTs or no?

Here is the article's link: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/webmedx-and-nlp-international-team-to-bring-natural-language-processing-software-to-medical-transcription-103906588.html

Today I feel like Laura Ingalls Wilder did when she watched her world around her go from horse and buggy to cars to flying planes for transportion. Things are changing fast, and I am overwhelmed and concerned for the future of my career.

Thank you to all who possibly can help me understand this NLP information. Have a super day.

Maybe this will help you understand it better.

related to what we do now, but maybe to what we will be doing. Put very amateurishly (I don't have a grasp on this either), data mining is configuring documents so the computer can extract and gather data that can be very useful in various ways. Data extracted from reports on a person with a cancer can be combined with data from other patients to make it available to professionals, including physicians and researchers, and no doubt also insurance companies (until they finally are accepted as obsolete) and billing services.

Some systems require physicians to enter the data in a cumbersome way unnatural to them and time consuming so the computer can recognize it. Others would allow them to dictate more as they've always done and require some clerical (note, we're clerical workers already working in the documents) tagging, etc. (shorthand for I'm basically clueless) to identify data points for the computer.

Regarding living our lives in the midst of a centuries-old ongoing revolution, at least you realize it started waaay back before the good old days even and hasn't just started as a sure indicator of the end days. :) Change, even galloping change, is just the way it is. Pragmatist

But just as SRT has its limitations and still requires human review, NLP technology also is not 100% accurate and will require validation by a skilled healthcare documentation professional.

This has been in practice for at least 5 years - UstaB analyst

I worked for a company a few years back and my job was to review the transcribed files that had been scanned into the database for particular words/catch phrases/disease entities, etc and compile reports and patient profiles. Some in the beginning were for clinical trials but in the last year I was there, MAJOR insurance companies had become clients.

I still have connections to that company and today there is very, very little actually transcribed documents coming thru the system anymore; instead structured data has become the all the rage. Doctors are having to make sure they use the proper "catch" phrases, etc or they don't get paid. I've witnessed this IMPROVING patient care and recordkeeping in many physician practices.

And yes, it's going to be another nail in the MT coffin. This is why it pays to know databases and be able to work with them with some ease. We'll be totally redefined in the next few years and telling someone you "typed" for 30 won't mean a hill of beans if you can't back it up with top-notch editing and database skills.

Love you guys! Hoped people in the know would - Pragmatist

chime in. Can you list any specific classes we should be taking? My memory's pretty poor, don't want to take them too far in advance of need, but maybe a good foot-in-the-door one at least?

BTW, I chose Webmedx in good part in hopes that it would be one of the ones coming through all this change intact, continuing to offer me a stable job in the process. Information that my employer is busy, busy working at this is basically reassuring, even if all the uncertainty requires a deep breath now and then. :)

Good grief, if you can type it you can edit it. The gap between the 2 isn't that large - fg

Very true, thanks, FG, but that's not what's being discussed. - Pragmatist NM

(Agree, though, too much is made by some of the "leap" to editing. For most just a shuffle sideways.)

Thank you for all the responses and the AHDI link about my question. I am breathing again. I found an article about the data mining thing. It helped me understand what you are saying and what it is, kind of, I think (water is only cloudy now, not completely muddy). Here is the link: http://www.healthcare-informatics.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=8F3A7027421841978F18BE895F87F791&tier=4&id=A8BD077DF19843349AA8FD33DBA9286A

I have enjoyed the changes in my MT career and the new things I am constantly learning. I even enjoy SR most times and my income has increased finally after doing it for about 2-1/2 to 3 years. With that being said, I feel insecure about the recent lay-offs, bankruptcies, off-shore concerns, companies buying other companies, and low work volumes, etc. When I saw this NLP information, I began to wonder if it was time to go back to school and start over completely with something else. (It takes a sledgehammer to get my attention apparently as watching all the above-mentioned lay-offs, etc., did not seem to be enough of an attention getter.)

Whatever all this new technology brings, I hope MTs can become even more useful and more productive to the patient's medical record. Remember typewriters? Remember no electronic resources? We can produce so much more now with our technology, and hopefully the future will make us more invaluable but with different techniques. I would like more information on being proficient on database skills; if anyone can lead me to this information, it would be most appreciated. I guess we should take a lesson from species in the forest...adapt to our environment so we are not ambushed and/or swallowed. LOL.

Thanks again for being here through my heart palpitations today everyone. =)

You mentioned the layoffs, bankrupties, offshore concerns, buyouts - It is not just all about MT

You mentioned the recent lay-offs, bankruptcies, off-shore concerns, companies buying other companies, and low work volumes, etc.

This is not all about MT. You just described our country's economy overall.

Data mining occurs in many areas; advertisers trying to target certain groups of the population, etc. It's been a practice in the coding world for some time as information is extracted for statistical data in regard to injuries and accidents, disease trends, etc. The study on estrogen replacement therapy is a recent one that comes to mind. It's also in use by insurance companies, which I think was already mentioned. Just another way of doing analysis.

International Labor Partners, What Do They Do?
Apr 19, 2012

I've read on here previous comments about the ILPs not having the skill set to perform straight transcription/editing, and if that's true (and I tend to believe it myself), then exactly what is their purpose in the industry? Can they churn out the line count (or way above and beyond line requirements)? Can they create/edit a document that is ready for release to clients? Who QAs their grammar, punctuation, spelling (in correct English)? Can they precisely transcribe OR reports, car ...

Silent Partners Transcription Company - WARNING
Jun 26, 2014

Just a warning to anyone thinking of working for this company.  They are very quickly going to disappear because they're so impossible to work for.  I worked for them for 9 months, and in that time: I never received a contract after asking over and over again (yes, I should have quit sooner).  I was repeatedly told that their "lawyers are working on them" and since found out that they had contractors there for up to 7 years with no contract. They only use f ...

Webmedx Needs To Pay
Apr 24, 2010

The unremarkable Wedmedx needs to pay for the downtime MTs are incurring because they want to switch everything over to their horrendous ISR.  The unremarkable Webmedx requires 1 to 4 hours to get new computers up and running and yet we production people are supposed to make up that time or use our PTO time or just not get paid.  The unremarkable Webmedx just hired new people and gave them bonuses to sign on but can't pay their longtime loyal employees for time lost due to no ...

Webmedx Pay Better Than Most
