Silent Type is getting so scary - sm

Posted: Feb 05, 2014

This is getting so scary.  It's more than just holiday slowdown and winter storms.  Where is all the work?  Please, please, please, if any CURRENT employee knows anything, I'm begging you to share with the rest of us.

I don't know - sm

I've read on these boards that she has fired people for not meeting the minimum productivity requirement. How can we do that if there is no work though?

One explanation perhaps - Oldie

My brother was to have shoulder surgery. He lost his Blue Cross, went through exchanges, and now has a $6000 deductible so no surgery in his future. This may explain some of the low work. It's slow all over.

not sure, but going on a long time - lost cause

[ In Reply To ..]
This is not just a new occurrence. This is going on two years of no work/low work. Working long hours to get about $100 for two weeks. Not really worth it. Need to look for something else. She gives no answers but complains that you are not working enough and that there is work. Yet, sit for hours and nothing. She says others are getting full pay. Prove it!!!!!!!

This is not a hobby - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It is supposed to be a full-time job. This goes way beyond the normal periods of low work. It's a shame what has happened because it seemed like she used to really care about her employees.

that's the whole point - what has happened?

[ In Reply To ..]
We're left hanging. Do we even have a job? Is there a future here?

what has happened - is

like you said, we're left hanging with our anxiety, worry, insomnia, uncertainty....

There is no communication - sm

There is no way to know what's going on because all we get is silence. It's very hard to believe that she doesn't have any clue as to why there is no work, but keeps saying there is plenty.

This is the same thing that happened to me at the SAME EXACT TIME last year. I was also told there was plenty of work and I was the only one not meeting production, WHICH (yes I said it), and you be the judge, according to the boards was not the truth as many others were complaining about the same thing. She just kept telling me there was plenty of work, but she could never explain to me why I was getting NJA all-day-long, every day!!

Finally, after she took all the PTO time away that I had accumulated, when I did have work enough to produce (above the minimum always), she told me if I could not get my production up maybe this was not the job for me. My thought was WTH, COULD NOT..??? is she nuts?? I had been producing (almost 4 years with ST) way above minimum.

So, I ask you to be the judge - why would you stop producing?? I will tell you why - SHE HAS NO WORK people. She lies about it, but the bottom line is there is no work. Move on. Maybe she wants to retire, sell out, whatever the case, you are not her priority.

And I know some of you are thinking it is easy to say move on, its the same everywhere, but if you have no work and are not getting paid then tell me this -- what are you losing? You are just not monitoring and milking her system for free anymore that is the only difference. Break it down, is it worth the 12-14 hours days x 10 days (120-140 hours per pay period) to make the 0.83 to 0.72 cents per hour for a total of 100.00 per pay period, which barely, if at all, pays for your internet connection...so again WHAT ARE YOU LOSING HERE?? seems to me it is costing you!

I may not be making what I once made as an MT, but I am not working for ST for FREE anymore either...I moved on and glad that I did.

And that is just my opinion, for what it is worth...LOL

I went through the same thing TWO years ago. NJA, but told there was work. Never getting answers except, "It's just you." When I realized that the "slow time" wasn't going to end, I used NJA time to look for another job. It took me 3 months, but I found a much better job where I actually make money. I actually get vacation time now (which I always seemed to fall just short of "earning" at ST), and I work for people who actually listen to me AND answer my questions truthfully. Imagine that!

Good for you, ex-STer, for getting out of there!

One word for you - sm

Document, document, document. I would suggest checking the legality of this MTSO's shenanigans, as well as many of the others.

ST work - STMT

[ In Reply To ..]
It has been slow but I have enough work and have no problem making numbers. I think each account is different. This is always a slow time of year. I would be patient. Or just talk to M. She may be willing to give you a second account to help with slow times.

I have it all documented.

apply for unemployment - today

[ In Reply To ..]
You do know you're likely eligible for at least partial unemployment right? They normally go back 4 quarters to your income and base how much you get on that. Don't wait until you've had four quarters of no money and then apply, although even that would be more than you're earning.

When you apply for UE, it also brings the state in to notice things like EVERY SINGLE employee works 75 hours. I wonder how you work 75 hours and make $100?? I wonder how the reality of the 100 hours it takes to get any kind of line count becomes only 75 hours.

She's been operating this business underhandedly for years now. It's time for the remaining MTs who are being lied to, to throw a monkey wrench in her "let me pad the books with MTs so I can sell this ship" by bringing the state in to examine her legalities.

You don't owe her anything and if you're already not getting work, you have nothing to lose and possibly something to gain by filing for UE. It's there for a reason. Use it.

Regarding UE - sm

Feel free to email me if you have any questions. I went through it with another company that sounds very similar.

Really ladies....... - Michigan Mom

[ In Reply To ..]
Ive been with this company 13+ years. We've had moments like this where it slows down many times. I swear if I had to listen to all this whining, I wouldn't answer the phone either. If I wasnt still making money though you can bet I'd be looking for another job. Why on earth are you hanging around making $100 a pay check? There is no sense worrying over the future. If you think its unstable, change it!! It IS that easy.

To Michigan Mom - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
In your 13 years, have you ever been restricted to 45-50 pages a day, and if so, for how long? Of course we're worried. It's not whining to be concerned about your livelihood if you are the sole wage earner in the household. There's just no way to support a family on the fast-food wages this calculates out to be. I agree that $100 a paycheck is totally ridiculous and I don't even see how that is possible, has to be a gross exaggeration. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing you have a spouse who is also bringing home a paycheck, otherwise you would have a little more compassion. I do love my job at ST and I have been a loyal and supportive employee for several years and I, too, have seen slow times but never this bad. No sense worrying over the future? Are you kidding? And no, it is NOT that easy to change it. Have you read these boards, how many experienced MTs apply for job after job and don't even get a reply? Like I said, I love my job and I hope with all my heart that things will turn around, but I can't help but worry. I have a family to support!

Nope, I'm a single mom - M.M.

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm a single mom with three kids. Yes we have been restricted before. Its been awhile and it didn't last long. The rest of my point is simple. If this ship is sinking and goes under and you made the decision to stay aboard and now find yourself unemployed you will do what? Run around saying where is my next meal coming from, OMG? No. You'll find your strength and do everything you can to get a job or assistance. If you think this company is headed for disaster get out. Be positive. You can and will be fine. Worrying is like crying, once youre done the problem still exists except now you have a runny nose. Good luck to all. I'm going to stay on the ship and if it sinks and I'm forced to do something about it I will.
To M.M. - Just wondering
[ In Reply To ..]
How can you feed a family of 4 on $80 a day or less? I see you plan to "stay on the ship" but how long can you live on these part-time wages? As you know, ST only hires full-time employees, but we have now been reduced to part time. I have to wonder what the paychecks will say next payroll - hmmmm 75 hours because it (barely) equals more than minimum wage? Amazing how that works out for the company.
M.M. must have generous child support, - otherwise would not be so flippant. nm

I think it's time to start fighting back - anon

Enough is enough. I think she thinks we are afraid of her and her insulting emails. Well, I'm not. There really is nothing left to lose here, in my opinion.

Can anyone give me info on Silent Type, either on the board or by e-mail? Would like to know about steady work flow, general idea about line rates, if they provide equipment, straight typing versus VR, weekends required, and do they still require you to train on site at your own expense and if so when is that reimbursed?  Any current info would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks in advance. ...
