Silent type? - oldmt

Posted: Sep 26, 2011

Can anyone give me info on Silent Type, either on the board or by e-mail? Would like to know about steady work flow, general idea about line rates, if they provide equipment, straight typing versus VR, weekends required, and do they still require you to train on site at your own expense and if so when is that reimbursed?  Any current info would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks in advance.

In my experience, work is steady. Pay is by the page. Yes, they provide equipment. Straight typing and no VR that I am aware of. Not sure about weekends, might depend on what account you're on. Last I knew, you are still required to train there for two days with expenses reimbursed after six months with the company.

I applied to them and got this curt replay "sorry, not part time."

Their job postings say "sorry, no part-time positions available."

I didn't use the ad, I went to their website so I didn't see. I am not complaining about the no part-time part, it was just her curt reply I ticked off. Not a thank you, just sory, no part-time, very curt.

Y'all complain if you apply and get no response. You get a response and call it curt because she didn't send you a love letter after you apparently did not even read the ad. Geesh.

This response was uncalled for. My point was it could have been more professional AND no I did not use an AD, I went there directly so GEEZ back to you. No one was asking for a love letter, I was asking for courtesy. I don't care if they answer or not, but I would expect respect and courtesy and that is what I give.

I was told they reimburse up to $500. My rt air fare and hotel would have been $800. sm - Colorado MT

They might be a great company, but that seemed a huge gamble on my part for something I knew so little about. The recruiter wouldn't even discuss wages with me -- I was just supposed to agree to take on these expenses in blind faith, I guess. Glad it worked out for you. :-)

that doesn't make sense -- - anonmt

You cannot go for training until you accept the job and you cannot accept the job w/o knowing what it pays.

So how do you figure you would be going for training not knowing what it pays?

I have no idea. I told her I wasn't interested. sm - Colorado MT

She told me that I had to be willing to commit to going for the training, and I told her I couldn't commit to go without knowing what it paid. And even if it worked out and I stuck it out the 6 months and they reimbursed me $500, I'd still be out $300. As I said, I'm glad it worked out for you. I am only relating my experience. If they are the ones demanding my presence, they should be the ones to take the chance and pay for it upfront. Nowadays, I hardly think on-site training is necessary for an MT position, but again, that is only my opinion, and we are all entitled to have one.
I am anonmt and I do not work there. I am a passer by - just trying to make sense of what you said. sm

Strange way to hire people. No one would commit in that type of situation. You did the right thing.

These companies now-a-days...I swear, do they make this chit up as they go along, or what?

I know myself and the other 2 women I trained with, were all told in the phone interview what the pay scale was, how it was computed, what the bonus structure was, etc. So I'm not sure why Colorado MT was not told. Obviously, an MTSO has nothing to gain by being shady on what they pay and I found Marilyn to be very upfront, very honest, and realistic. She's no nonsense which I like. The pay is every 2 weeks, too, not the bimonth stuff so many of the other services do.
Sorry. I did not mean to imply the owner is shady. I know nothing about her. - Colorado MT

As I said originally, it may be a wonderful place to work, but I don't have $800 lying around to gamble with. And you're right ... if a person can find a decent paying job that does not require them to put out a bunch of cash upfront, that is probably the way to go.

Not sure why I'm so "special" that the recruiter wouldn't tell me the pay scale. Maybe I just caught her on a bad day. I'm glad it has worked out for you. I'm juggling so many jobs right now, I hardly know what I'm doing, but at least the bills are paid and I have a little spending money (for vacation, but not to NJ! lol).
Oops .. sorry for the ID mixup. I need to pay more attention. :( nm - Colorado MT

Steady work - yes

Line rates - by the page - works out to be equivalent to about 8-10cpl depending on how fast you are.

provide equipment- yes

VR - no

Weekends required - I dont believe so but it may vary by account

Training- yes, you gotta go there. Yes, the training was helpful. Yes, it's only $500 reimbursement. IMO, not worth going if it will cost you more than $500 if you can find a job that doesn't require seeing you in person. I was close enough to drive and it was beneficial being there.
