Quitting w/ no notice & Does anyone know of a stable MTSO looking for QA help? & Other Thoug - humbleQAgal

Posted: Apr 25, 2013

I have done some Team Lead and Acct Management work too. I was working 3 VR Editor jobs (I also have an online jewelry boutique) to make ends meet. I lost one of the jobs last week and need to replace it...don't mind VR Editing but prefer working with MTs (in the US). I really enjoy the challenge of getting blanks...goofy, right? I know that the jobs are few and far between - especially with Nuance and MModal. I wouldn't mind going back to Nuance but they will not give me the time of day...I worked there for about 3 weeks and was offered another job that I wanted really badly-the only problem was the owner is a real prick and insisted I leave Nuance immediately...I interviewed on a Friday. The owner said, "you have been there a couple weeks-its not like they depend on you. If you want the job, you have to start Monday." And because I was excited and completely stupid, I listened to him and quit with no notice. When I told my supervisor at Nuance what happened, she said if I wanted to come back, she would try to work it out for me - but I don't have her phone number and all I have is her Nuance email (I don't think the Nuance email server allows emails from any other server/domain). Has anyone else experienced that (leaving with no notice and then wishing you hadn't)? I learned my lesson the hard way...the new job was a complete nightmare-well, it really wasn't the job, it was the owner. He would yell at all of us, tell us to shut up, he even told a coworker he was going to put him on life support if he screwed up again (I saw the message bc the owner sent it to "all" on our company instant messenger, so everyone saw it.)...Another one of his favorite things to do is to deduct money from employees' paychecks for "errors." I'm not talking $5...the same coworker who was threatened to be put on life support had $750 deducted from his check right after I started there. Owner sent out an email to the entire company letting us know what the offender did wrong and what he was going to do to punish him. That's when I started frantically trying to be get back in with Nuance. I guess I was lucky, when I got into trouble, he only took $500 from me. It really wasn't my fault either...basically, I was not trained to update ADT on one of our accounts so the acct. went 8 hours without an update on the days I worked...I asked to be trained a few times and no one would do it, so he took $500 from my check the week before Christmas. Yep, I learned my lesson. I didn't think that was legal...but this guy really doesn't care. I had to work under a different name and he wanted me to sign a contract under this different name. I asked him..."are you asking me to commit forgery?" He wouldn't answer me. Why was I working under a different name? Very, very long story...and don't want to bore anyone...if any of you want to know send me an email, and I will share that with you. I know that so many people who come to this board are struggling right now to find a good job or to stay busy at their present jobs...lots of us are single parents or the only one in our home able to work because our spouses or partners are ill or unable to find a job in their profession. It's great they we have a place to come so that we can vent, get advice, network, etc. I have been coming here for about 5 years and I think this is my 3rd post :) I read what you all write though, and I appreciate all of you for keeping this board going and those of you that are so willing to help perfect strangers. Blessings to all of you. Thanks for reading-didn't intend for this to be so long...I guess I had a lot to say after 5 years! ;) Unity is strength... when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved. ~Mattie Stepanek Where there is unity there is always victory. ~Publilius Syrus

Just reapply..we all have regrets. Try DTS in Oklahoma - They might need QA ppl

You sound like you knew your QA, so you would surely sell yourself with your knowledge, mixed with what seems like a good personality and a caring attitude. If Nuance does not hire you, just consider it their loss. Its a jungle out here. I don't even know how you made 500 or 700 extra dollars to be taken out of your paycheck...lucky if I make that even! Blessings back. We have all had owners and supervisors that needed mental therapy!

How did you get from this post that she is a good qa and - she has a good personality? She SM

left with no notice and is now reaping the benefits of that action.

Because she admitted she was wrong! How many do? - anon

Also she said she loved the challenge of blanks! Listen, I worked with tooo many who would take the English docs and leave all the foreign and difficult reports, so that is in and of itself a good sign, at least to me. And she said that she left withotu notice because she was given a line of BS but she had trust in that person.

Our department was laid off that DAY...NO notice at all. Plus I never used a sick day nor would I lie, yet that respect was not given back either.

She said she appreciated this board and those who post, and those who understand and comfort. That is what I based it on. Plus my experience in this field that has come to show lack of caring qualities. Amen and the added Blessing never hurt anyone!
None of that shows her qa ability. - nm

It is called Trust. I have not given up on a Few Good MTs - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I would trust her first and then there is always the work ethics that come into play. I would not be quick to down grade this person. How do I know anything people say without giving then the benefit of the doubt first? I know there are good MTs still all out there. I trained many and many know a lot of things we were never required to know in the past. We trained lay people at the VA.
Trust an MT who doesnt give notice. Work ethic that after a - few weeks ready to throw in the towel. NM

Don't judge by not giving notice. No notice to you when they throw the towel at you! - Fairgame

We are an "at will state" and we were reminded that the employer does not have to give notice, but you better. So, here is justice again with the double-edged sword and she is blind...so don't burn your bridge if you still want to use it!
This post is an excellent example of why you should give - notice. And the MTSO doesnt have to give SM
[ In Reply To ..]
notice and so you have the choice to apply there again or not. And didnt your mama ever tell you 2 wrongs dont make a rigth?
Interesting explanation - QA newbie
[ In Reply To ..]
Appreciating this board and those who post means nothing, she could stink at a QA job and still be a good person. Quitting without notice looks bad, regardless of the job. We all get fed BS in our jobs but that doesn't give a person justification to quit without notice; many of us would be quitting every couple of days if we followed that criteria. Doing that in a QA job when people are depending on you would not be a good thing.
Would not be a good thing. Yet if I were in her shoes? - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I took a lot of abuse on the job and yet stuck to the job ethics to never degrade myself...yet look at what this 'career' has become. Administration did not stick up for any of us. I would never do on to others as the hospitals have done on to us. I still would employ this lady and give her a chance...regardless. We turn the other cheek.
It is what it is. We know what MT has become and you either - make it work for you or you dont. This is a busin
[ In Reply To ..]
and the bottom line is always gonna be $. Know that and figure out how to make MT work for your situation. Leaving without notice and being willing to throw in the towel after a few weeks, based on the promises of a stranger, no less, does not sound like good choices that are going to help you get ahead if you decide to stay in MT
Get ahead when being an MT? We are totally at the end! - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
I'd like to know how you get ahead at being an MT in today's market. I don't think it exists...maybe if you do throw in the towel and move to where there is work...and then where and for how much? 1 cpl?
Dont agree. I think there will always be a place for US MTs and - QA. It will be a smaller piece of SM
[ In Reply To ..]
pie but still a place for us. I think for the last 5 yrs or so MT has been reestablishing itself in a new way because of new technology. The MTs whose skills used to be good enough is now finding that is no longer true. The MT who insists on a 9-5 M-F shift is not going to find as many job opportunites. An MT who refuses to do VR and wont learn keyboard short-cuts is not going to find as many opportunities. I just think what used to be "good enough" is now "not good enough"
Oh yeah. Btw, CPL doesnt matter. It is you what you make - by the hour that matters. nm

I agree - QA newbie

I wondered the same thing. I didn't read anything in regard to QA skills. I have to say this: Any employer who told me that I had to take a job and start on a certain day (as the OP stated happened to her) would send up one huge red flag. Employers frown on people quitting without giving notice, so that might be a hindrance when looking for another job. Two weeks is not that long to tough it out, even if you hate your job; it's the right thing to do and it would have given the OP time to look while still employed. I had to find my own job (I also do QA) and had no help, so personally I would advise the OP to do her own homework. I have seen QA jobs posted on this site as well as others.
QA newbie then let's see what your future brings. - anon

Not a sin to quit. I admired people who quit in 1 day, when it took me 10 years to find out what took them no time at all, and maybe they were smarter. They had nothing to lose, I had wasted my youth and investment time to not even reach retirement, and be left with no health coverage...3 times at big hospitals. They come to watch you take all your belongings after years of dedication and your investment into your future...all gone. No notice there. Good luck to you. Give your youth, but learn to have another career to fall back on. Just learn from the discarded o'lbies. If you can, go back to school.
And just remember that old saying - xyz

Future - To anon - QA newbie
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm a "newbie" in a QA position, but not new to MT, I've done MT for 35 years and went through the same scenario after being in an MT job I loved for 19 years. I had notice that my department was closing, so it came as no surprise. I was offered the QA gig and an HIM job when all the mistakes from the outsource company started hitting the fan. I also went to coding school and can code, but at 58 my youth has flown. I do like working in HIM, though. It is no sin to quit, I agree, but 1 day is hardly fair to you or your employer. I've never admired anyone who didn't give a new job a chance, and there is a difference between quitting and getting the axe.

Am I the only one who doesn't read a post if it is one giant paragraph? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
It just makes it so much easier to read a post if it is broken up with some white space.

I agree - nm

Poor OP, not to pile on, but jungle text is a pet peeve. - No paragraphing = poor quality. nm

Quitting W/o Notice
Nov 25, 2011

Considering quitting Transcend w/o notice.  I understand I will not be able to be rehired.  In years past I quit MQ w/o working through my full 2 weeks too.  (I know... BAD, BAD, BAD.) I am concerned though that if I go to work for a smaller company and they are bought out by one of these 2  (which seems to be a high probability) I could be screwed. In the field these days you have to have a FT job and try it out before you quit.  Then you are trying to do both and get ...

Quitting Without Notice

If I work as an IC and quit without giving any notice, can the lady I work for legally withhold my paycheck and not pay my final invoice? I know as an IC we really do not have any rights with the labor board so if she does not pay me what would be my next course of action? I have never quit without notice but due to the circumstances she has left me without many options. ...

Quitting: IC
Dec 28, 2009

I've been working as an IC for a small operation.  There is no written contract, and in fact nothing was stated verbally about terms, conditions, etc. In keeping with the above ;) , they are disorganized and unprofessional, and I want out.  In fact, I have already written my resignation notice. Another MT just up and quit the other day.  I wish to do the same, even though I have never, ever done this in my life (I'm 46 and have been working since the age of 17).&n ...

So Close To Quitting
Oct 07, 2011

I have to vent!  At the moment, there are no words to express how much I hate this job.  i am so sick of listening to foreigners who sound like they have marbles in their mouths and the women sounding like shrill little girls with marbles in their mouths, struggling with all my heart and soul to do a good job, for pennies, knowing if I send to QA for help, my pennies will be taken away.  This is insanity!  I swear, I've died and gone to hell!  ...
