Shall we have a redo of followup? - Chavera

Posted: Mar 26, 2013

I think it is a ridiculous thing to lose points over, but I am INSISTING that the way I typed this sentence is correct:

The patient returned to the cancer center for followup of her metastatic cancer.

Isn't "returned" the verb in this sentence?  I am adamant that followup should be one word here, but I am being told it should be "The patient returned to the cancer center for follow up of her metastatic cancer".

This is making me crazy.  The explanation I received from BOS does not seem to fit this situation, either.

You are correct. It should be followup. - nm

the way you typed it IS correct - sm

Returned for followup is correct. I certainly hope you did not lose points for this. Either way, I would hope you have some recourse over some ill-informed idiot making arbitrary corrections to your transcription!

It would make me absolutely nuts if I were corrected incorrectly like this. It's so stupid!

agreed - followup is clearly a noun here - sm

If the sentence had read "returned TO follow up on..." then yes, two words. Your QA person needs to be schooled ;)

I would be nuts if someone nitpicked - my work like that

I use "followup" in every instance. I am not going to waste time and brain cells trying to figure out hyphen-yes, hyphen-no, one word, two words, verb, noun, conjunction junction what's my function. Not once has a client complained about this word - such an insignificant issue.

Every time I come to this board I am thankful I don't have a QA breathing down my neck or a client/contractor requiring BOS slavery.

You are absolutely right about that! I am going to continue to use "followup" correctly, even if it costs me points.

Does this mean... - see msg

...that you would say patient followedup with his PCP? There is a difference bewteen followup and follow up. If you are having trouble with nouns, verbs, use my example of followedup.

The patient will follow up. The patient had a followup (or follow-up).

Of course not - my work like that

That's just dumb. I would put "followed up."

Everything else is "followup." No follow up. No follow-up.

No exceptions, no complaints, no problems.

you are correct.

so, did you discuss with QA or not? - nm

I am sorry it has taken me some time to see your question. I have not come to MT Stars for a few days.

After wrangling with my supervisor, she did more research and realized that "followup" was indeed correct and reversed the error.

I was going down swinging on this one and would have been willing to take more hits in terms of being marked off for errors rather than putting in an obviously wrong word, so glad I got it cleared up. But GEEZ!!!! Just trust me, why don't they? ROFL

Well, in trying a couple of your suggestions, I find it did not make a substantial difference.  I found I already try listening ahead and I had been using ctrl M to jump around the report when I need to, but never works for going faster through the actual report because I can't tell what is background gibberish while the dictator is thinking and what might be the dictator.  Leading me to believe it must have a lot to do with the account.  I can never go too far ahead of the d ...

Follow Up Or Followup
Jan 09, 2013

It's always the little things that snag me up.  I know the rules on follow up as a verb  and followup as a noun and adjective, but when a doc says, "CHIEF COMPLAINT:  Follow up acne", does he mean "recheck acne" which would make follow up a verb and thus spelled follow up, or does he mean "here for a followup of acne"? and thus the followup spelling.  What is the general rule on this "shortened" statement? Thanks. ...

Followup With A Company.

Last night I had a company call me because they were interested in me working for them. I had taken the test about 2 weeks prior. My question is how long should I wait to send a followup email?
