Followup to Fair Wages - xmtso

Posted: Feb 18, 2011

Serious question:

Why do you stay?

I don't know Fair Wages' answer to that, but I stay - because its the only thing Im good at.

Other kinds of work don't appeal to me at all. School bores the H* out of me. I love words, love typing, enjoy transcribing. But just because I happen to LIKE this kind of work, doesn't mean it is valueless, or that I am valueless.

Yes, it's happening in other sectors nationwide. Does that make it right? No way. I think when most of us talk about fixing the way things are in MT, we're also talking about fixing the broken employer-employee system in this country.

Many (or most?) employers basically rape their employees. And the US government looks the other way, holds out their hand under the table for that little cash bribe they receive, and LOOK THE OTHER WAY.

Our situation is like 2 attorney friends of mine, one makes millions, the other poverty wages - Lots of variables

[ In Reply To ..]
I can't even count the number of variables that determine whether an MT makes really good money, an adequate income, or poverty wages. I just keep thinking about 2 attorneys that I know. One barely scrapes by and the other has made millions. Not many of us make millions, of course but otherwise, it's similar. The one that barely scrapes by isn't able to do specialty law that the successful one makes so much money in, and she also lacks common sense. Her best adviser is her psychic rather than mentors in her career field. She got into law because her father was a judge, not because she actually had the skills to do it, just as some of our MTs today do. There are many other similarities, but my message is already too long.

Fair Wages
Feb 18, 2011

I think a fair wage should be in relation to the economy, that which allows you to meet your baseline financial needs without having to work a second job or long hours.  I worked for a service back in the early 80s for 6.5 cents per line.  Today, nearly 30 years later, they're offering 7.5 cents per line, yet costs are sky-high.   It's pathetic.  It's sweatshop third world.  It's true, we're stuck with the way things are, but ...

Feb 08, 2010

Good morning all - I'm trying for a dermatologist today.  Not my usual account.  She dictates "He is fair com plected" meaning he has a fair complexion.  What is the right way to spell complected? I googled it, came up with a lot of variations and nothing concrete.  Thanks for your time!  ...

To Me2 Followup On ASR
Jun 18, 2010

Well, in trying a couple of your suggestions, I find it did not make a substantial difference.  I found I already try listening ahead and I had been using ctrl M to jump around the report when I need to, but never works for going faster through the actual report because I can't tell what is background gibberish while the dictator is thinking and what might be the dictator.  Leading me to believe it must have a lot to do with the account.  I can never go too far ahead of the d ...

Follow Up Or Followup
Jan 09, 2013

It's always the little things that snag me up.  I know the rules on follow up as a verb  and followup as a noun and adjective, but when a doc says, "CHIEF COMPLAINT:  Follow up acne", does he mean "recheck acne" which would make follow up a verb and thus spelled follow up, or does he mean "here for a followup of acne"? and thus the followup spelling.  What is the general rule on this "shortened" statement? Thanks. ...

Shall We Have A Redo Of Followup?
Mar 26, 2013

I think it is a ridiculous thing to lose points over, but I am INSISTING that the way I typed this sentence is correct:   The patient returned to the cancer center for followup of her metastatic cancer.   Isn't "returned" the verb in this sentence?  I am adamant that followup should be one word here, but I am being told it should be "The patient returned to the cancer center for follow up of her metastatic cancer".  This is making me crazy.  The explanation I r ...

Followup With A Company.
Jul 24, 2013

Last night I had a company call me because they were interested in me working for them. I had taken the test about 2 weeks prior. My question is how long should I wait to send a followup email? She sounded like she wanted to get me started ASAP but needed to check with my references first. I keep imagining the worst and thinking my references weren't that great and I won't hear back. Thanks so much for the advice!! ...

Fair Pay??
Mar 24, 2012

This may have been discussed before, and if so, I missed it, but SR seems to be getting worse and worse all the time (and I use M*Modal for two different MTSOs), picking up less and less of what is actually said.  This is even on very clear-speaking dictators.  Some have been to the point of SR getting maybe 2 words right in 2 sentences.  In this case, I'm actually "typing," but getting paid the SR rate.  It struck me that the only fair way to be paid would be to be paid ...

Fair Chance Or Not?
Mar 03, 2012
