Just started on M*Modal. Can't imagineâ¦sm - Ugh.

Posted: Nov 10, 2011

I can't seem to get used to this platform.  I can't imagine how I'm going to make my daily line requirement, let alone ever get very fast on it.  Any tips from the experienced users of M*Modal?  Frown

I'm starting with a company next week that is using this as their primary platform. What is it specifically about M*modal you don't like ?

Just seems very awkward so far...sm - Ugh

I'm hoping I get used to it with time. I haven't quite gotten used to matching up or not matching up the voice with the cursor, and at times I think it's faster to use the foot pedal versus the function keys. I was used to working on DocQscribe, which I never thought was all that great but I'm starting to miss it.

I'm a DocQscribe girl too - anon

I hope it gets better for you. I'm going to be in your same boat in about a week - hope I catch on to it quickly ...
There is a way to turn off that cursor - following the words SM

but I just can't remember it. I hope someone more proficient will tell you how to do that. I think that will help you tremendously.
I'll try that. Thank you! nm - Ugh

Recommend NOT turning off cursor. It's a key to - significantly more speed. Just

set yourself to learning to jump cursor to dictation and jump dictation to cursor. It'll take a couple days max before muscle memory takes over.

This is just a little thing to learn in a world that requires constant learning.
Thanks and good luck to you too! nm - Ugh

Ugh, M*Modal is the SR engine, Enterprise - is the platform. If you are

M*Modal tips - anon

I actually like M*Modal over the old "native" platform we used at Wmx. The M*Modal had much more functionality. It was awkward at first, and different companies may differ slightly in all of the functions and commands used with M*Modal. The highest producers learned to use the keyboard most of the time. I have made the switch as well and use the keyboard probably 80% of the time. It is awkward at first, but you let the voice keep going ahead while you make corrections, then use the key combination to join the cursor back to where your cursor is when you are done editing. My LPH has gone up to close to 300 since making this transition, but it DID take a while to get used to it! I am not crazy about VR in general and still am not making nearly what I made with straight typing, but this did help. Good luck to you, I know just how you feel!

When I started on MModal, I HATED the fact that the audio was attached to my cursor and, for the life of me, I couldn't get my brain and fingers to work together to make good use of that function. I will say, though, it is very possible to be productive in MModal...all you have to do is practice. I know most trainers toss TONS of keyboard shortcuts at you and shove the playback highlighter down your throat, but focus on 2 or 3 shortcuts at a time until you're comfortable with them and then move on to the next batch. Before you know it, you'll hate having to move your hand off the keyboard to use your mouse :) As for that STUPID playback highlighter, TURN IT OFF and use your foot pedal to listen through your audio and, if you want to give it another try later on down the road...go for it!!!

I know a lot of people say that they can't make any $$$ on VR, but I was able to make more than my straight typing pay after about 6 months of practice and patience. For the most part, I was able to pull 375-425 VR lph each pay period.

I hope this helps and best of luck to you!!!

Thank you both. sm - Ugh

I'll will try all the suggestions. I really like the one about focusing on a couple of shortcuts at a time and adding others later. Great idea.

Thanks for all your input. :)

Agree about M*Modal (sm) - CB

I'm new (this summer) to M*Modal too and I still can't understand why so many companies use it. It's just not transcriptionist-friendly to me. I think the drop-down menus for headings wastes time and takes longer/more keystrokes than just putting in an expander. I especially don't understand how the developers think taking your hands off the home keys to hit CTRL SHIFT and arrow keys is proficient. I came from averaging 500 lines an hour with ExText and am striving to do the same with M*Modal but so far only up to 300. Some of things I do: Like others, I detach the cursor. I've also used Instant Text and HotKeys to reprogram so I can keep my hands on the home keys (for example, keystrokes to add in periods and capitalize the next letter, ALT+J instead of left arrow, ALT+K instead of right arrow, etc).

I agree with the above especially focusing on a few commands at a time. I did that and forgot to mention that above. I personally now really LOVE the highlighter, EXCEPT for very bad VR needing a lot of edits. It does help me speed through. But, I didn't like it at first and it took a while and a lot of patience. As far as the drop down headings, you CAN put it into your expander and bypass that, and I also put shortcuts in my expander for capping letters, going forward 1 word, 2 words, 3 words, and 4 words without needing to take my hands off the home keys, I just named it FF1, FF2, FF3, FF4, you can pick what works for you. I also put in shortcuts for adding 2 or 3 hyphens to words that need them, shortcuts for changing period to comma and capping the next word, changing period to comma, etc. See what is aggravating you the most and add a few at a time until you have trained your fingers, then add more. I can get up as fast as 500 LPH on good reports, but the short ones that need lots of time spent on demographics OR reports that need a ton of editing makes my line count drop a lot! I still can't make quite as much as I did with straight typing (I averaged 250 LPH straight typing, so I would need to consistently average 500 LPH to come out even, not even close) but I have gotten up my average. Good luck, have patience with yourself, you are training your brain and fingers to work in a totally new way!

Just venting……..I am so bummed.  I was doing so well a couple of years ago.  I was working as a Radiology Transcriptionist for six years for a very, very large radiology facility, two days in the office and the rest of the week from home in the evenings.  Then they went to VR, but kept me on because the some of the docs were not complying with VR so those reports had to be typed and in addition I was doing editing.  I was making good money and was able to put aw ...

I just need to vent…. I’ve been working part time as an IC for a hospital in the Midwest for about 10 months now. They actually found my resume online and contacted me.   I was already working 2 other part time jobs which really took up a lot of my time, but of course, not much money involved, so I decided to take it.    I did all the training and caught on very quickly.  In the beginning, I was able to work whenever I wanted since work was plentiful. ...

TRANSCRIPTION CHALLENGES IN A TECHNOLOGICAL NUTSHELLâ¦

Transcription is becoming a lost art.  With the arrival of voice/speech recognition software, which captures sounds and “magically” turns them into words (albeit not always the correct ones), the specialty field of transcription has become an endangered livelihood.  Unfortunately, forgotten along the way are the skills and talents a good transcriptionist possesses to make a document accurate and easily readable.  The bottom line, as with most things, is the Almighty Do ...

What Happened To An Honest Dayâs Work For An Honest Dayâs Pay

FIESA â Miniature Writeups.

After reading responses to a post I made last week, and then the many posts about FIESA over the weekend, a thought occurred to me.  Basically, FIESA is like they're giving us a "write up," or a warning, and that each time we sign our initials, we are signing that writeup.  Not that they need or require a reason to let most of us go, but this is a perfect way to protect themselves.  They won't allow us to write comments in those boxes.  We get reprimanded if we do. ...
