Dragon Voice Recognition Software Question - kdthorn

Has anyone out there ever tried the Dragon voice recognition software? I used to edit VR for another company but now work for someone else who does not use VR and I am doing straight typing. I am wondering if it would be worth investing in the Dragon VR software to speed up production. I know it's created by Nuance, and they use it in their system and it's great for the dictators and the editors but what if you are a transcriptionist and want to play the audio for the software? Does that make sense?

It took me a long time to train it and if the mic is off 1/16 inch, it can make it difficult. It has a preview box that shows you what you said, but then if it thinks you meant something else, it will change the text. You HAVE TO have the medical edition or it won't work. That costs about $1300. There are updates every two years or so that are $600.

All that being said, it does eventually increase your speed. Sometimes if there is a med you don't know, if you speak it, the dragon will "know" the drug.

It works with most word based programs, but there is a way to get around it if it doesn't cooperate with the system you are working with. I envy you. I would love a straight typing account.

I used a headset to listen to the dictation as I dictated it with Dragon, which was a very fast process with fast dictators. However, you have to proof read in the end as there are many mistakes you won't easily catch with VR, such as he vs. she, an vs. and. These are things that don't jump out at you as the type of errors you get with straight transcription. The proofing process erased all the time I gained using VR. This was about a decade ago and not sure if they have improved the editing process in Dragon. It takes FAR longer to edit with VR than just using the keyboard. I don't think this has changed. I spent an incredible amount of time training medical phrases, which is the best way to built speed and accuracy.

In a nutshell: It wasn't worth the effort even with pretty good and fast dictators. I wouldn't even consider it with a slow dictator or one who refuses to use the pause command.

I think it is only good for those who have disabilities, i.e. CTS and you will lose some time with it.

I was wondering, is anybody making any money at all on voice? I keep hearing just minimum or maybe a little more. I call minimum wage 7.50 to 8.00 an hour. My experience with it was at one point I was told that I hadn't made enough for minimum and they had to do make-up pay. So how is everybody's experience with voice? I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition. I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it. What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections. Does anyone know if the voice recognition part of EPIC is like eScription? During the short period of time I had to use eScription, we were not allowed to recast sentences, etc. I honestly don't know how we are going to handle the ESLs when we move to that platform.
