Losing My Job To Voice Recognition - DG

Hello, I have never posted here before but need some advice please. I have had my own transcription business for 7+ years working for a group of providers who are employed by a clinic. I have had nothing but praise and appreciation shown over the years regarding my speed and quality of my work. However, regardless of the preferences of the providers, the clinic is forcing a switch to voice recognition to save money. They have told me it is due to nothing that I have done and that I do great work...which almost makes it worse because I have no control, nothing I can change, to make things better or different. Frustrating!

The problem is I live in a small town area so finding my own new accounts is all but impossible. Can you please steer me towards a reputable company or give me some possible ideas as to where to start looking or what I may be able to do online. There is so much and I am so skeptical. I don't have time to weed through the scams. What companies do you recommend applying to for work-at-home transcription work?

Transcription agencies are horrible to work for. Even the smaller "nice" ones are selling out to the big guys, and are also use VR. Yes, they need MTs to edit the VR, but they are paying peanuts to do it.

I would ask your clinic accounts if they plan on editing their own work. Even the best of dictators needs editing.

I would ask the clinic to keep you in mind, in case they want you back, either to edit for them or to transcribe for them. I have no other great advice. Unfortunately, the clinic work is being lost to technology. The acute care hospital is, too, but not as easily.

If you have acute care experience, and you still feel you want to work for a transcription agency, it can't hurt to test.

Most people are advising to just get out of the biz completely. I was doing acute care for 15 years, and while I didn't run out of work, they cut my pay to edit the VR nonsense.

I have read some of the VR notes-horrible. The doctors are supposed to edit their own but they don't have the time to do it and handle their patient load.

I have experience in many different fields of practice from psychiatry to radiology to surgical to podiatry and more.

Right now it looks as if I will be working for minimum wage in an office somewhere. I am not sure what is worse, the pay cut or the loss of flexibility for family and children that I am so used to having. UGH! I hate this!

Just want you to know it happened to us too this month. Hospital radiology department, all out of work due to VR and the docs supposedly doing their own editing. I say supposedly because they are supposed to be...but they aren't. Nothing but crap is coming out of those computers and it's like they don't care or just don't have the time. I was thinking of going to coding but afraid the same thing will happen over time. At age 39, I am fixing to go to ultrasound school. To heck with this! Good luck to you.

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but this is happening to MTSOs everywhere. A dear friend of mine up in Northern California lost her very successful business for the same reason. She was old enough that she decided to just retire. There are some companies out there that are staffed by great people but, unfortunately, they run out of work. I hate to say it, but I think the MT as we knew it era is over. I am fortunate to be 70 next month, so I retired and went on SS. Sometimes I get some fill-in and have one consulting project going, but if I did not have SS, do not know what I would do. I honestly am sorry that this has happened to you. I don't know your age, but is it possible you might transition to/train for another career? Good luck to you. I really do hope you find something that will meet your needs.

Thanks. I know that is the case, but hard to swallow. I am 40, so I still have a long road of working ahead of me. I know something will work out, but change is hard, especially when I have loved so much what I do and have worked so hard to be a great employee. I appreciate your encouragement and kind words.

Look up "Medical Scribe" on Google and see how it sounds. Just beware of the MTSOs who want to hire you as a remote scribe for production only, and beware of schools. You might want to ask your clinic if this is something they may use in the future. Personally, I think they will have to either use scribes or editors. I mean how many malpractice suits can they afford to pay with what they save on editors?

I have been thinking about your situation and wondering if you have ever spoken with a career counselor? Sometimes we have talents in areas we have not realized. I know many people who have met with career counselors and gotten some new ideas that helped them transition to new careers. Might you quality for some of the retraining programs out there? Because I am so old, I have not really explored what is available, but I know that some people who used to be with MedQuist (boo, hiss) were able to get retraining. Perhaps someone will see this message and can give you more info. Again, I feel for you. I was not ready to retire (I like to think I'm a young 70--I hike and do sports, etc.) and I felt that part of my life was lost. I can only imagine how people must feel who need to work for 20 more years. I really am sorry this happened to you. (It happened to lots of MTSOs, too. Not all of were greedy corporate types. Some of us--like me--had small cottage industries, paid people well, treated them with kindness, knew each person by name. And the giant squid ate us up too by underbidding contracts and forcing us out the door.) So I can relate. I really do wish the best for everyone.

I was wondering, is anybody making any money at all on voice? I keep hearing just minimum or maybe a little more. I call minimum wage 7.50 to 8.00 an hour. I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition. I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it. With 96% plus voice recognition reports and half pay from straight typing, I'm losing health care benefits. SO UNFAIR!!! ...

What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections. Never done VR before and for some reason they make it sound so easy. ...

The company that I am working for is going to go with M Modal VR. I currently use ChartNet and they are switching to VR. I have never done this type of transcription before. Does anyone know if the voice recognition part of EPIC is like eScription? During the short period of time I had to use eScription, we were not allowed to recast sentences, etc. I honestly don't know how we are going to handle the ESLs when we move to that platform. I was talking to a physician assistant today and she said when she was working in a hospital, she couldn't believe what kind of reports came out when doctors were dictating on voice recognition without having transcriptionists type them up afterwards.
