Voice Recognition Myth #1 - missindale

the myth is that we're teaching it! The stupid thing refuses to learn! If this were a human, he or she would have been out the door a long time ago (and the interview process would have gone something like "Oh, yeah I can do transcription, I was a receptionist at a doctor's office!). So if there's anyone still concerned about being replaced by this thing, and resenting having to "teach" it, you can start worrying about other things (of which I'm sure you have plenty).

I resent being paid only 4cpl to babysit VR, hold - its hand, and change its diapers. nm

Those who sing the praises of Speech Wreck are as bad as any 2-bit shyster, the same type of crooks who claim you can make money stuffing envelopes at home. Actually MTSOs that use Speech Wreck are worse: Stuffing envelopes does not compromise patient care and lead to potential catastrophic health complications for your mom, dad, sister, etc. Do those of you who willingly do Speech Wreck want YOUR medical records compromised?

For shame. For shame.

Speech "Wreck" - If you spent as much time learning speech

as you did griping about it on this board, you might actually like it. I do speech editing on a couple of different platforms and am very profitable. Of course, it took about a year to get quick with it and learn every keyboard command that was available, but the speed and money does come. You just have to take the time to LEARN it. Spend your time practicing and not complaining and you will probably see a difference in your opinion of speech recognition. As far as patient care being compromised, if you are a good editor, there shouldn't be an issue. I agree, I certainly would not want Andypudenda doing my family's medical records for fear she would kill someone just to make her point seem valid. Shame can't be placed on software, only on the ignorance of those using the software.

Wow! I know Andypudenda has nothing good to say about speech "wreck," but I have to say I am beginning to think I agree! And I'm not an ingnorant software user, so please don't go there. I start doing VR last October after losing my transcription job (they with with a company doing VR - go figure!) and have worked diligently at learning all the shortcuts available on the platform used by the company I IC with now. Not sure who you're working for, what type of files you're editing, and what VR platform you're using... maybe yours actually works . . . but where I'm at, every single sentence requires at least 1 correction of some sort - punctuation, wrong work, missing work, and often need to replace a half a sentence (or more) of unintellible jibberish, every report, every day, all day long. Trust me, when the VR makes that many mistakes, shortcuts are basically worthless. And from my experience, VR ALWAYS makes that many mistakes.

I WANT to be good at this and expected it would take some time to learn. After 8 months of really working at using shortcuts, getting familiar with the dictators, etc., etc., etc., it is only marginally better. I seriously can straight type as fast/faster than editing the VR. Because I really WANT to do this work, I went as far as to go to Human Resources to see if they could put me in contact with someone, anyone, making over $10 an hour doing the basic 4. No surprise, even though she gave me a couple of names of "top producers" she wasn't able to do that. One doing basic 4 was only averaging $6.25 an hour! The other was doing radiology. Said she never uses the shortcut keys, only the mouse! (so much for shorcuts being the way to go, eh?) And she wasn't willing to share her average hourly wage, although she said her "goal" was to make $100 a day. (That was her productivity hint for me, set an earnings goal . . . ) She didn't indicate, however, that she was actually able to do that and did not share her average hourly wage. (I've only done a little radiology, but as I recall it is very repetive, no matter who is dictating. I'm wondering if maybe VR is able to do a much better job with that work type?)

So, all that said, have you got any helpful pointer's for those of us who really, really want to earn a living wage doing VR but just haven't been able to? Please share! There are a lot of us out here looking for the key that opens the VR editing door of success!

Speech Wreck - gabby

I was so beside myself when they trained us for speech wreck. They actually told me that we had to leave it word for word (that is if the doctor said it) for example, he do go to the doctor. I was told not to change it to the correct grammer because it is not teaching the engine to learn the doctor and that this is not grammar 101 and the doctors would just have to learn how to speak. Now this is not my oath as a medical transcriptionist. What happened to accuracy and correction of grammar?

You must have been told that as "site specific/verbatim" instructions. The VR platform that I was trained on never told us that.

If the MTSO's insist on lowering the line rate of the MT on VR, it should be a gradual lowering based on the increased accuracy of the VR program. I think it is insane to go from $26/hr to $6/hr overnight to do almost twice the work. Just erasing the beginning and end of the reports with the demographics and then the CCs is time consuming. This is ridiculous. I even question whether the MTSOs are decreasing the price to the clients or pocketing the over 50% difference to buy more and more small companies and expand their "kingdoms" further. Comments?

The SR I'm working on is getting dumber by the day.

I dread sitting down at my comp every day now, knowing I'll have to do more work to make less money (at a job I was already burned out on). It's hardly an incentive. I know, becoming homeless and hungry should be incentive enough, but it's not.

If SR were a human, it would probably try to get hired as an over-the-road truck driver because it had a Barbie Power Wheeler as a kid.

I just applied at a manufacturing company this evening, hoping to get out of speech wrecking. Even the fact that it's 3rd shift didn't turn me off of it. How bad is that?

I was wondering, is anybody making any money at all on voice? I keep hearing just minimum or maybe a little more. I call minimum wage 7.50 to 8.00 an hour. My experience with it was at one point I was told that I hadn't made enough for minimum and they had to do make-up pay. So how is everybody's experience with voice? I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition. I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it. With 96% plus voice recognition reports and half pay from straight typing, I'm losing health care benefits. SO UNFAIR!!! ...

Have to learn VR soon. What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections. Never done VR before and for some reason they make it sound so easy. ...

Does anyone know if the voice recognition part of EPIC is like eScription? During the short period of time I had to use eScription, we were not allowed to recast sentences, etc. I honestly don't know how we are going to handle the ESLs when we move to that platform. I was talking to a physician assistant today and she said when she was working in a hospital, she couldn't believe what kind of reports came out when doctors were dictating on voice recognition without having transcriptionists type them up afterwards.
