A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry
I'm curious about something and maybe somebody out there knows the answer to this question. Do the transcriptionists in India do voice recognition or are they regular transcriptionists.
In my mind I thin this is what happened to the transcription profession. Someone thought that if we can get the work done cheaper in India then we should go there. However those girls won't have as much terminology as the ones here in the states so if we go to voice recognition that would really help them out.
I have been a transcriptionist for over 20 years. I've worked for three outside services, Spheris, Transcend and Transolutions. I'm not sure which one did the voice processing but it was either Spheris or Transcend. I sent the president of the company a very detailed letter about why the pay should not be any different. #1. If you are editing your voice processing report, your own canned text report or typing your own report, you need to have the SAME MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY. I don't know where the idea that you should cut our salary in half originated but obviously the person was not a transcriptionist.
I am working at a hospital where I live but am now working from home for them. It's a lot easier to work from home for a hospital where you know the docs, their dictations and the particulars of the town than for an outside institution. Anyway we have just gone to voice processing at the hospital for some doctors (very few so far). The first question I asked when they said they were going to do this was "Are you going to cut my salary in half?" I got the reply no but that we would get paid a bonus for a certain number of lines, etc. So far though we have had no change in our pay and we are paid hourly.
I've never gotten stressed out over line counts. I've told everyone I have ever worked for that if I come in and sit down and type and do the best job that I can that is all you can expect from me and if it does not reach what my line count should be I'm sorry and I'll try to improve. I've never ever had a supervisor tell me my line count was too low except when I worked for the oustide companies. I've worked at three other hospital/clinic settings in addition to the outside services and where I am now.
Just curious and if anyone wants to comment please do. I do agree with a remark that was posted earlier and that is THIS IS RUINING OUR PROFESSION. Another point for "WAKE UP AMERICA" and look where your jobs are going.
