I was talking to a physician assistant today and she said when she was working in a hospital, she couldn't believe what kind of reports came out when doctors were dictating on voice recognition without having transcriptionists type them up afterwards. Hopefully, things may eventually turn around.

Don't count on it. VR is here to stay and our jobs are gone. Talking to a customer at my second job a few days ago, and she was surprised that I was an MT. Said she did not think that type of job was still available and that there were still MTs around.

VR disliked by several - new but old

My niece is a cardiologist and trust me VR is not the "so called" dream. One of the hospitals that she is affiliated with has completely quit with the VR because of all the errors they were getting and the extra time it was taking from having to go through VR and then still have a transcriptionist go over it. They realized they were spending more money then before and they have gone back to using only inhouse transcriptionists.

.......for realizing what we have been saying for so long. Problem is that any more bean counters are making the decisions, and they are mostly seeing $$ signs and not correlating with how it affects patient care and outcomes.

Except that by the time they all figure this out, most - of us MTs will be long gone.

And I think most of us, once we're out, will not go back to MT, no matter how much money they were to offer us. I am just SO done with the medical world, that I think I'd rather drive a porta-potty cleaning truck.

more and more facilities are going to "check sheet" dictations for routine things, i.e. basic ER visits, clinic visits, even parts of hospital visits - anything they can get around paying us to do and only having dictators dictate what isn't "normal" and they have to dictate. Used to be that Medicare would penalize facilities if dictators used "normal" and now they're behind the "blessings" to use the "canned" dictations. Bah humbug.

I had been doing radiology transcription for 9 years and then, we went to VR. I work for 12+ doctors. Even the ones that wanted VR, despise it. Inadvertently, I found out that since implementing VR,last year, our facility has lost one-third of its income and the docs are saying that it takes them twice as long to get one report out. Reports are money. The reports that are going to the Referring Physicians look sloppy and frankly, make me look stupid, since my initials are at the bottom of the report.

Doctors don't like VR because now their mistakes are showing. These are things we used to clean up, but now that it's "verbatim," the crap stays in and those reports are not as 'perfect' as they used to be and they do not read as well as they used to. Maybe some of them should clean up their sloppy dictation, and it's well past the time they realize how bad some of them really are!

I was wondering, is anybody making any money at all on voice? I keep hearing just minimum or maybe a little more. I call minimum wage 7.50 to 8.00 an hour. My experience with it was at one point I was told that I hadn't made enough for minimum and they had to do make-up pay. So how is everybody's experience with voice? I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition. I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it. With 96% plus voice recognition reports and half pay from straight typing, I'm losing health care benefits. SO UNFAIR!!! ...

Have to learn VR soon. What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections. Never done VR before and for some reason they make it sound so easy. ...

Is everything with M*Modal now voice recognition? I'm in an area that until now has been doing regular transcription but am just realizing my area is going to be VR in the very near future. I recently got hired on at a large company where my account is about 50/50. It took a bit of getting used to, but have found that I really can edit faster than I can type, and actually enjoy the break from straight typing. Does anyone know if the voice recognition part of EPIC is like eScription? During the short period of time I had to use eScription, we were not allowed to recast sentences, etc. I honestly don't know how we are going to handle the ESLs when we move to that platform. We have been doing straight typing but I have to recast a lot of sentences. Is anyone having problems with their eyesight because of VR?
