How does VR know difference between peroneal and perineal?

Is there an auto-correct feature on VR that everytime you say (for example) forearm it comes out correctly and not four arm?

SR does not recognize the difference. That's one of the reasons it takes so long. You have to verify each word by SR is correct, i.e., conjunctiva, conjunctivae and the ones you mentioned, as well as others. No easy way around this one darlin'. Another butt bite. I read every word, but apparently a lot do not. Just got a BIG email in last 10 days really stressing this very thing. Good Luck!!

Actually I've been blessed to still have a MT job. I lost one to Epic but still typing MRIs. My daughter and I were talking today about this and wondered

Thank Jesus I work for my local hospital who unfortunately just bought Epic.. so I've been eliminated as a transcriptionist, but now will be doing scanning of the paper charts and abstracting from other facilities. I work a second job at home typing MRIs, again for a local company. I know my coworkers and management personally. I just think it would be a good idea for me to learn editing and get certified.

Re perineal vs peroneal: Here's where knowing medical terminology comes in extremely handy. You'll know right away by the context. If you're not sure, yep, you have got to look up the definition. Be aware, too, of perianal and perennial.

I know the difference and BTW have seen many transcriptionists who don't. Today we saw "recommended cereal CT scans"... seriously?!?!?!?!?!
Like the poster said before, VR doesn't know the difference and thus the reason for editors - so we eliminate one human who types for another human who doesn't (per se). Sad......never thought I'd be talking about this 25 years ago.

*some* of the programs I have seen (only a handful, I admit) - if set up properly from the beginning AND if docs are properly trained -- two BIG ifs -- will establish an "identity" for each individual doctor by speciality. This is to help with some of those sound alikes and other terminology issues.

BUT, SR is still making an educated (or not so educated in a lot of cases) guess.

It does not know past/present tense, sentence structure, etc. as well as a real live person either. Hence, SR will never be perfect and there will always be a need for editors -- just fewer of them than transcriptionists - and pay is less if it continues as it is now.

IMO - this is also why front-end speech (docs doing all their own with no editors involved) will never take off for acute care. At least with back-end speech an editor is still involved & there is more accuracy & consistency in the reports (again just IMO -- docs/PA/nurses are not language specialists and do not have the time or desire to proof their work).

The company I work for has a fantastic VR program. We're given careful training on it and for the most part, if you continually correct 4 to four, it will "learn" that. It "learns" peroneal over perineal based on the syntax/words surrounding it. It's gotten much more intuitive than the early days. I will often go through 10-15 reports and only add in some punctuation. It's also this that allows us to clear 400-600 lph.

That wasn't my post, but I have worked on Dictaphone/Nuance's VR program, and it "learns" as she described.

How well it "learns" depends on other factors as well. In our case, our stupid manager entered a lot of ERRORS on her end, so there was nothing we could do about that but correct the blasted mistakes everytime they popped up. Talk about frustrating!!!

I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition. I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it. With 96% plus voice recognition reports and half pay from straight typing, I'm losing health care benefits. SO UNFAIR!!! ...

What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections. Does anyone know if the voice recognition part of EPIC is like eScription? During the short period of time I had to use eScription, we were not allowed to recast sentences, etc. I honestly don't know how we are going to handle the ESLs when we move to that platform. I was talking to a physician assistant today and she said when she was working in a hospital, she couldn't believe what kind of reports came out when doctors were dictating on voice recognition without having transcriptionists type them up afterwards.
